Damian didn't look the least bit bothered. "Go ahead. Perfect chance for you to explain to your dad exactly how you pushed your mom down those stairs."
Vanessa opened her mouth, then snapped, "You—"
Damian cut her off coldly. "Vanessa, I'm warning you. You're a kid, so I'm not gonna touch you. But other people? I won't hold back."
With that, he turned and walked off without a second glance, leaving Vanessa standing there, stunned.
He'd never claimed to be a good man. A brat like Vanessa—he could've easily taught her a lesson. But she was Scarlett's daughter. Blood. So all he could do was warn her and leave it at that.
He got in his car and headed to the office.
He'd barely sat down when Brett walked in.
"Mr. Langley, an invitation came in. You wanna take a look?"
Damian was already booting up his computer, flipping through files. He didn't even reach for the card Brett held out. "Who's it from?"
Brett glanced at it. "The Stewart family. Mrs. Stewart's birthday dinner is tonight."
Damian's eyes flicked up at the name, then back to Brett. "Decline it. I'm not going."
Brett didn't ask why. "Got it."
He was almost out the door when Damian called him back. "Hold on."
Brett stopped and turned. "Something else?"
Damian looked at him. "You're not gonna ask why?"
Brett frowned slightly. "Do I need to?"
Damian nodded. "Yeah."
Brett paused, then shrugged. "Alright. Why aren't you going?"
Damian finally cracked a smile. "'Cause I'm gonna be with my wife."
Brett rolled his eyes and muttered under his breath, "Knew it."
Damian caught the mumbling but not the words. Didn't really matter. He just smiled to himself, remembering what Clara had told him that morning, and the grin on his face only grew.
He spent the rest of the day at the office and left in the evening.
She took Clara's backpack, slipped it over her own shoulder, and said softly to Damian, "Mr. Langley, you two talk. I'll take Clara home."
Damian gave her a warm smile. "Thanks."
Violet glanced over at Scarlett, who was watching her. She smiled back. "Rest up. I'll come again tomorrow."
Scarlett's voice came out a little urgent. "I—"
But before she could finish, Violet had already taken Clara's hand and walked out.
Their footsteps faded down the hall.
Damian sat down by the bed and watched as Scarlett's expression slowly tightened.
Seeing her like that, he couldn't help but smirk. "That scared of me?"
Scarlett glanced up at him. "I already ate. You don't need to stay."
Damian leaned in closer, holding her gaze. "I'm not staying for you. I'm staying the night."
