"Damian, put me down." Scarlett's face flushed bright red, the color creeping down her neck.
Damian had no intention of letting go. He dipped his head, his lips brushing lightly against the corner of her mouth. "I'm not putting you down," he murmured. "What are you gonna do about it?"
He was always like this—stubborn, unreasonable, with an edge of defiance that somehow made him even more infuriating. When he got like this, even his eyebrows seemed to carry a challenge.
Scarlett turned her face away. "You're shameless," she muttered.
Damian just grinned. "What good is shame?" he asked. "Does it pay the bills?"
Scarlett had no comeback for that, so she let him have his way.
He carried her to the passenger side, then leaned in and buckled her seatbelt for her.
Then he crouched beside the car, holding her hand like he couldn't bear to let go.
Scarlett's cheeks burned, and she couldn't bring herself to look at him.
Seeing her flustered, Damian couldn't resist teasing her a little. "It's not like we haven't kissed before," he said lightly. "Why are you acting like a teenager?"
Her heart stuttered in her chest.
He noticed she wasn't answering, just avoiding his gaze, and realized she was embarrassed.
So he dropped the teasing and asked gently, "Ready to go home?"
Scarlett finally looked at him. "Go where?"
"Back to Theron Manor."
She paused, suddenly remembering why she'd come out here in the first place.
The problem wasn't solved. Not even close.
Damian saw the worry settle back onto her face. He reached out and tapped the tip of her nose. "Let's head back for now. We'll figure the rest out later."
She knew there was nothing left to accomplish here tonight. "Okay," she agreed quietly.

Vincent wasn't sure when he'd finally drifted off, but when he opened his eyes, the world outside was still pitch black.
Memories from before he'd fallen asleep came flooding back. Scarlett. Was she still out there?
He grabbed his phone and checked the time—past one in the morning.
He sat up, swung his legs out of bed, and walked to the window.
Looking down, he scanned the area by the gate. She was gone.
He stood there for a long moment, frozen, an unfamiliar unease settling into his chest.
It irritated him.
