Scarlett's face flushed with embarrassment. "Don't. There are so many people out here. It wouldn't look right if they saw us."
But Damian paid no heed. He swept her up into his arms and spoke softly, "I don't care what others think."
Scarlett buried her face in the crook of his shoulder and lowered her voice. "Damian, I want to walk on my own. Sean said I'm still recovering and need to move around more."
Her words left Damian with no room to argue. He halted and set her gently on her feet. "Alright then, walk by yourself. Tell me right away if you feel unwell."
Scarlett nodded and laced her fingers through his. "I will."
The two headed to the shopping mall together. Scarlett craved spaghetti, so Damian accompanied her to have a plate.
After the meal, he took her to pick out two new outfits: a long overcoat and a down jacket. Once they finished shopping for clothes, he led her to the toy store. In the end, they chose a large electric toy plane as a gift for Eric.
With the present ready, they walked back to the parking lot. It was already past five in the afternoon when they left the mall, and the sky had long since turned dark.
Just then, Zachary's call came through again. Damian nodded toward his phone. "Honey, could you answer this for me?"
Scarlett glanced at the screen, hesitating for a moment, but finally picked up the device.
The moment she answered, Zachary's disgruntled voice came over the line. "Hey, aren't you supposed to be his godfather? Do you have any idea what time it is? Eric and Felix are already here. Where on earth are you?"
After Zachary finished complaining, Scarlett spoke gently, "Sorry, we're on our way now."
Zachary fell briefly silent upon hearing her voice, then quickly changed his tone. "Oh, it's you, Scarlett. Please tell Damian to drive carefully. Don't get distracted doing things you shouldn't and hold us all up."
Heat crept across Scarlett's cheeks. "I understand."
"I'll hang up now. We'll wait for you two," Zachary said.
"Alright."
Once the call ended, Damian let out a chuckle. "That's just how Zachary is. Don't take his words to heart."
