Only after he had calmed down somewhat did he turn to Scarlett and ask, "Is Damian really that wonderful? Does everyone in the Theron family think so highly of him?"
Scarlett met Vincent's gaze and answered in full detail. "Yes. Damian is wonderful."
Vincent said unhappily, "What's so wonderful about him? He keeps so many women on the side. Scarlett, what do you even see in him?"
Scarlett said, "Vincent, just because he has a reputation doesn't mean he's really a playboy. By the same token, just because you claim to love Sabrina doesn't mean your feelings for her are truly deep. You two are nothing alike. There's no comparison."
As Vincent listened, his eyes slowly closed.
He desperately wanted to swallow the anger burning inside him, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't.
At last, he reached his limit and snapped his eyes open.
His eyes were bloodshot, as if steeped in blood. Glaring furiously at Scarlett, he demanded, "No comparison? How impressive is he? An hour? Three hours? Or does he go deeper than I do?"
He advanced on her as he questioned her.
Scarlett instinctively backed away until she was cornered against the wall. With nowhere else to go, she raised a hand in front of herself.
Vincent crowded closer. Lifting a hand, he hooked a finger beneath her chin and ordered in a low voice, "Scarlett, answer me."
Scarlett's eyes reddened, but she glared at him stubbornly. "Vincent, I told you. There's no comparison between you."
Nearly frantic, Vincent demanded, "Do you mean he can't compare to me, or that I can't compare to him?"
Scarlett asked coldly, "Do you really have to make me spell it out?"
Vincent said, "Spell it out."
Scarlett nodded. "Fine. If you want to hear it, I'll tell you."
"Listen carefully, Vincent. Damian would never make me face every danger alone. He wouldn't shout at me like this. He respects my friends and my family. Everyone around him respects me, too. Even his mother has never made things difficult for me. But you're different. Everyone around you treats me with malice, including you. You make me feel afraid. Terrified, even."
She spoke slowly and clearly, laying bare everything in her heart.
Never in her life had Scarlett felt more liberated than she did at that moment.
Even though the chill in Vincent's eyes looked as though it could devour her, she wasn't afraid in the slightest.
There had never been any going back for her and Vincent.
From here, things between them could only get worse.
She might have returned, but they were no longer the people they had once been.
