Scarlett's first instinct was to resist. But after knowing Vincent for so many years, she was certain that once he knew she and Damian had already slept together, he would never touch her.
He was obsessed with cleanliness. He would never touch a woman he considered tainted.
With that thought, she gradually calmed down.
Vincent carried her over and laid her on the bed.
Scarlett lay flat on the familiar mattress, but her state of mind was nothing like it had once been.
Now, every nerve in her body was on edge.
Once, she had longed for Vincent to take her, longed for him to stay the night, longed to hear even one or two sweet words from him.
But she would never be that foolish again.
At the same time, though she firmly believed Vincent wouldn't touch her, she still grew uneasy when she felt him lean down over her.
Vincent had always been impossible to read.
She had said it herself: the only constant in life was change.
What if Vincent really had changed?
As Scarlett felt his burning body draw close, she tried to ignore the anxiety in her heart.
Vincent won't change.
...
Elsewhere, Nathan stared at the disconnected call and instinctively headed for the front door.
As he walked, he told the others beside him, "I'm going to find her."
Violet stood nearby and had heard every word of Scarlett and Nathan's conversation.
Before she could even think through the reason behind it, Nathan had already finished speaking and started toward the entrance hall.
Violet hurried after him. "Nathan, get back here."
But Nathan was like an enraged bull, driven by brute force and completely beyond control.
Just as he stepped out of the hall, however, Damian came toward him.
