On Her Daddy's Bed (Adeline and Luciano) novel Chapter 67

Author’s POV.

Alex was back from home, and this time the operation had been done successfully. Axel and Hazel had been sitting at the doctor’s office, digesting all the necessary information needed to help Tracy heal completely.

Alex had rushed home to change and bring a few of her clothes, along with his. He would be staying with her at the hospital until she fully recovered.

“You look like a bird without feathers,” Axel teased coldly as Alex dropped the bag in the hospital room, staring at Tracy, who was lying on the bed, fighting for her life with the help of the life-saving machine.

Unable to say a word, Alex gulped, then turned to Axel.

“You must be really stressed, boss,” he remarked.

“Axel,” Axel corrected, giving him a sharp glare.

Alex had always switched the name, but at that moment, he barely knew when to include formalities or toss them aside.

Hazel was seated on the provided chair, her hands tightly holding Tracy’s.

“Will you watch over her until her father comes?” The question caught him off guard. His eyes widened, and he swallowed hard, trying to compose himself.

“Did… have you seen her father?”

Axel could notice the fear and anxiety in Alex’s voice, but he shrugged it off.

“The doctor informed me earlier that her father would arrive… I wonder what kind of father he is…”

Alex gulped nervously, feeling the weight of his worry. He couldn’t allow Axel to stay any longer. What if Tracy’s father walked in? Axel would kill Tracy on the spot.

“Oh… that’s great. If that’s the case, you should be on your way now, Axel. I’ll join you soon,” Alex said, trying to steer things away from the topic.

Axel nodded, giving a low “hmm,” before stepping closer to Alex and asking, “If you love her this much, why are you holding back?”

Alex closed his eyes, his hands gripping the sides of his dress, feeling trapped.

“We can’t be together. She’s from a different world.”

Axel’s hand slipped into his pocket as he replied, his voice steady but firm, “Detach now if you will eventually, but don’t hurt her any further.”

Alex’s cheeks stretched into a fake, forced smile. If only Axel knew the man who fathered Tracy, he wouldn’t be this kind.

“She should get going… Momma,” Alex muttered, his words trailing off as Hazel turned to them.

“Let’s go home…” Axel beckoned, and Hazel nodded. She glanced at Tracy one last time before standing up, swaying her arm over Axel’s, and they both walked out. Alex just stood there, silently praying that Axel wouldn’t encounter Tracy’s father.

Alex exhaled deeply and sank into the seat where Hazel had just been. He knew she hadn’t said goodbye because she was still angry with him for hurting her friend, but she was saving herself, keeping Axel from seeing her as his enemy.

His hand found Tracy’s, and he gently rubbed it, leaning his forehead against their joined hands, tears of sorrow welling in his eyes.

“I’m sorry, Tracy… I… I’ve never loved anyone other than you.”

If only his words could bring her back to the moment, he would give everything. He was deeply sorry, bitterly wishing he never gave up on her. He wished he had never done what he did the other day. He wished he had the right to love her completely.

“I love you, Tracy… I love you.” His words echoed in the silence until nature knocked him out of his sorrow.

A few days later…

Tracy had fully recovered. She woke up to find Alex by her side, and it was the most surprising—and yet, the best—thing she could have asked for. With control lost, Alex made a promise never to leave her. Even though he knew deep down that his promise might not be genuine, Tracy accepted it, for she still had internal injuries that needed to heal. But she was going to ask him: Why did he push her away if he loved her like he claimed?

Axel stood in his room, his back to the door and his face to the window. He held a cup of red wine in his hand, his face cold and completely void of emotion.

He was losing it. His mind wandered back to the day in the hospital. As he was leaving, he saw Mr. Austin.

Something didn’t sit right with him. The doctor had told him that Tracy’s father would arrive soon, and he arrived just as they were leaving the hospital. Could that bloody monster who killed his father and mother be the father of the woman he saved? The thought hit him like a bullet.

He would not spare anyone, not even Tracy. If she was the daughter of Mr. Austin, then he would kill her the same way he saved her. Even if she was his last family, she would hurt him beyond belief. After the death of his parents, caused by Mr. Austin, he lost his sister to a river and grew up on the streets with no shelter. No one to guide him, thrown into the world for the beasts to feed on. And they fed well.
