Chapter 688
That made Joshua jolt. He stared at her in disbelief. “What did you just say?”
He and Albus went back years. When Vee disappeared, Albus had even asked him to help search for her. They had looked everywhere, only for the child to have been right under their noses the whole time.
Even Diana felt the cruelty of it. “You heard me right. The little girl Officer Wilson and his wife brought back from Southeast Lavia was the Vee our family has been searching for.”
Joshua nearly smacked his thigh. “That’s on me. It truly never crossed my mind back then. Otherwise, I would have met the girl at least once.”
He had seen Vee’s photo before. If he had seen her in person, he would have recognized her.
But the situation at the time had been urgent. On top of that, the child had been brought back from Southeast Lavia, so everyone had focused only on keeping her safe. No one had considered that possibility.
Diana fell silent for a moment and did not continue down that line. She could not bring herself to say that Sydney had later been adopted into years of abuse. If anyone was to blame, then it was those who acted
with malice.
No one had a god’s-eye view. The police had already made the best decision they could at the time.
It was one thing to guard against an open threat. It was another to stop what came from the shadows. If they had launched a large public search for Sydney’s family back then, the outcome might not have been any better.
The fact that they had found Vee safely now was already more than she had dared hope for.
Joshua had not forgotten her last question. His expression darkened slightly. “What you asked about was already investigated back then. The people involved were dealt with a long time ago.”
Diana looked surprised. “You found out?”
She had assumed that part of the story remained unclear even now.
“Yeah.” Joshua nodded. “It was someone under me. Even though the crash was ultimately ruled an accident, we always believed internally that Jacob and his wife’s whereabouts had been leaked. So we dug deeper.”
By then, Diana understood the key point. “You found that someone leaked their movements, but there was no evidence directly tying that to the crash itself?”
“Exactly.” Joshua continued, “He leaked it to people outside the country. But we couldn’t prove the driver involved in the crash had any contact with anyone suspicious.”
If the case had happened now, with surveillance systems everywhere, they likely would have unraveled it long ago.

Diana considered this briefly, then decided to ask directly. “My father visited you frequently before the
incident. I wanted to ask…”
Joshua’s expression sharpened at once. “Does your grandfather know you came to ask me this?”
This matter was too serious. Whether this was Diana’s idea or Albus’s meant everything.
“Something this serious? I would never have come without Grandpa’s permission,” Diana answered plainly.
Joshua trusted her enough not to question it further. After a brief hesitation, he said, “Your father did come to me back then about this matter. But he wasn’t the one who asked.”
He paused, as if reluctant to go on.
Diana felt all the blood in her body surge upward. Anger and shock hit at once. She had not expected her guess to land so close. She had suspected it, yes, but part of her had still hoped it was only suspicion.
“A very beautiful woman?” she asked.
Joshua looked at her in surprise. “You know her?”
