Once a Doormat Now Untouchable (Caleb and Sydney) novel Chapter 687

Chapter 687

Nina acknowledged this, then said with concern, “Mr. Tarrant probably won’t tell us the truth, will he?”

If Theodore was truly involved, then he had almost certainly acted through Joshua. How could Joshua admit it? That would amount to asking for ruin.

Diana paused to think. “We’ll have to play it by ear.”

From what she knew of Joshua, he was not a man without principles or a bottom line. Yet Theodore’s reaction on the phone had been suspicious enough.

In his early years, Joshua had spent little time with his wife, and the couple had only one beloved son. Now that their son was building his career in Jouleston, they had settled there as well.

Joshua seemed genuinely pleased to see Diana at his door. He greeted her with a warm smile.

Despite the weight on her mind, Diana sat down with a smile. “Mr. Tarrant, I hope I’m not intruding with

this sudden visit?”

Joshua laughed. “Don’t try your grandfather’s old tricks on me. You’re the busy one now. I should be grateful you still came to see me.”

He sensed her hesitation and offered her an opening. “But it’s a workday. What made you free enough to stop by? This must be business, right?”

Diana gave a helpless smile. “Nothing escapes you. I came today to ask about an old case.”

She held back the most important detail. “Do you still remember the 2001 case involving the anti-drug officer couple who died in a car crash?”

Joshua needed only a moment. “Of course I remember. It was a major case at the time. Jacob Wilson and his wife had just cracked a drug-smuggling operation, and the ringleaders had all been arrested.

“Then, right after that, they died in a car crash. We suspected retaliation from smugglers, so we investigated everything we could.”

“But in the end, it was still ruled an accident, wasn’t it?” Diana prompted.

She remembered that, last year, Sydney had asked the Huttons to verify materials related to the case. She already knew some of the details, so it was natural for her to come prepared.

Joshua was not surprised. “Yes. There was evidence suggesting it was not a simple accident. But surveillance systems were underdeveloped at the time, and the driver died at the scene. We had no way to obtain stronger proof.”

He spoke without reservation. The case had left a deep impression on the police and had only deepened their hatred of traffickers.

Diana was about to ask another question when Joshua sighed. “That couple devoted their entire lives to anti-drug work. In the end, they did not even leave behind a child of their own. I’ve never mentioned this to anyone.”

He paused, regret shadowing his face. “Their biological daughter died long ago. The child sent to the orphanage back then was one Jacob brought back from Southeast Lavia.”

Diana went rigid. “Southeast Lavia?”

Conditions there had improved over the years, but at the time, it was synonymous with drug dens.

A girl that young in traffickers’ hands-what kind of life could she have had?

Joshua nodded, his voice heavy with regret. “Jacob told me the girl was covered in injuries. She was so thin she barely looked human. He feared she might have enemies among the traffickers, so he had her use his own daughter’s identity for the time being.
