Chapter 174*
Third Person POV
Felix stared at her. His mouth opened. Closed. Opened again.
15€ He paused. Looked at his clipboard. Then back at her. “What the hell was that? What the hell just happened?”
“I substituted for an injured fighter. Won the match. Now I’m back.”
“You killed someone!
“It was Cage 13. Death is an accepted outcome.”
Felix ran his hand through his hair. “Sterling, you just broke every protocol we have. You left your assigned evaluation area. Entered an
unauthorized cage. Participated in a death match†̈*
“Am I disqualified from the military selection?” Aria’s voice was calm. Direct.
“Ia€” I don’t know! I’ve never seen anything like this!”
The referee from earlier stepped forward. He was holding a tablet. “Major Helix, if I may?”
Felix turned to him. “What?”
“I’ve reviewed the regulations. Fighter Sterling technically didn’t violate any military selection rules.”
“How? She left Cage 8!”
“She left before her number was called. She was still waiting for her turn. There’s no rule that says candidates can’t leave the staging area
during waiting periods.”
Felix’s expression showed disbelief. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
‘Furthermore, her participation in Cage 13 was legal. She signed the proper waivers. The substitution was approved. Everything was by the
book.”
15%
The referee swiped on his tablet. Pulled up something.
“In fact, according to the partnership agreement between the military and his facility, any candidate who wins in Cage 13 receives automatic bonus points for demonstrating exceptional combat capability.”
“How many points?” Felix’s voice was quiet.
“One hundred points. Added to their base score.”
The entire staging area went silent.
“One hundred points?” someone whispered. “That’s insane!”
Another voice. That’s more than all the other evaluations combined!
Felix looked at Aria Then at the referee. Then back at Aria.
So she’s not disqualified.”
Correct. In fact, she’s earned the highest possible score in this evaluation
Felix closed his eyes. Took a deep breath. “This is unbelievable.”
“Additionally,” the referee continued, “Fighter Sterling is still entitled to complete her Cage 8 evaluation if she wishes. For the standard twenty points.”
Aria shook her head. “Not necessary. I’ll take the Cage 13 score.”
“Are you sure? The Cage 8 evaluation would add to your totalȧ€**
“I’m sure.”
The referee made a note on his tablet. “Very well. Fighter Sterling’s final spore for today’s assessment is one hundred for the Cage 13 victory.”
He looked up at the crowd.
“This is a historic moment. In the entire history of the Special Operations Selection Program, no candidate has ever achieved this score. Fighter
Sterling has broken every record we have.”
The candidates started whispering to each other. Some looked impressed. Others looked jealous. A few looked terrified.
Felix rubbed his face. “Fine. FINE. Sterling, you’re dismissed for today. Return to the barracks. We’ll announce final rankings tonight.”
“Yes sir.”
Aria turned to leave.
“Sterling.”
She stopped. Looked back at Felix.
His expression was complicated. “That was the most insane thing I’ve ever witnessed. And I’ve been doing this job for fifteen years.”
Aria didn’t respond. Just gave a small nod. Then continued walking.
Maya and Jen fell into step beside her. Neither spoke until they were out of the staging area. Away from the crowd.
Then Maya grabbed Aria ‘s arm. “Are you okay? Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine.
“That was terrifying! We thought you were going to die!”
Jen nodded quickly. “Seriously. When Theodore went down, we thought we didn’t know what to think
Aria kept walking. It’s over now. Let’s just get back to the barracks.”
“But how €” I mean, where did you learn to fight like that?”
Long story.
“We have time!
Aria stopped walking. Turned to face them both.
“Look. What you saw today was necessary. Marquis would have died if I hadn’t stepped in. I did what I had to do. That’s it.”
Maya and Jen exchanged glances. Both clearly wanted to ask more questions.
But something in Aria’s expression made them stop.
Okay, Maya said finally. “We won’t push. But if you ever want to talk†̈
“I know where to find you.”
They continued walking. Through the corridors. Past other cages. Past crowds of people.
Aria noticed people staring at her. Whispering. Pointing.
She ignored all of it. Just kept moving forward.
They reached the main entrance. The large concrete area where they’d first arrived.
The transport trucks were parked in the same spots. Waiting.
