Chapter 175
Angelina’s POV
The truck pulled into the compound at 9:47 PM. The engine cut off and everyone started climbing out.
I grabbed my gear bag and jumped down from the truck.
“Everyone gather at the assembly point! Felix’s voice cut through the noise. ‘Final announcements in ten minutes!*
The candidates started moving toward the main building. Slow. Exhausted. Some were limping. Others looked like they could barely stay awake.
I walked with the crowd. Maya and Jen stayed close to me. The assembly point was the same concrete area where we’d gathered that morning.
Felix stood at the front with his clipboard. Behind him was a large screen Digital. Probably for displaying results.
“Line up by candidate number! Felix shouted. “Same formation as this morning!”
Everyone shuffled into position. I found my spot. Number forty-seven.
Maya was somewhere to my left. Jen was behind me. Riley and Chen were cross the formation.
Felix checked his watch. Waited until everyone was quiet.
“Alright, Listen up. Today was the final evaluation of the Special Operations Selection Program. You all completed various assessments over the three days.”
He paused. Looked at all of us.
“The scores have been calculated. Rankings have been determined. Out of two hundred candidates who started this program, only thirty will be
selected for the Special Operations unit.”
Whispers started spreading through the formation. Felix raised his hand for silence.
“Im going to display the top fifteen names. If your name appears, congratulations. You’ve made it. If your name doesn’t appear, thank you for
your service and effort. You’re dismissed to collect your belongings and arrange transport home.”
The screen behind him lit up. A list appeared.
My name was at the top. By a huge margin.
The whispers got louder. People were staring at me.
I glanced over at Maya. She was staring at the screen with her mouth open Then she looked at me. Smiled. Gave a thumbs up.
The screen changed. Showed a red line separating the selected candidates from everyone else.
The list continued.
Felix spoke again. “Candidates one through thirty, remain here. Everyone else, you’re dismissed. Thank you for your participation.”
The formation broke apart. Most people started walking away immediately Some looked devastated. Others looked relieved.
The thirty of us who’d been selected stayed in formation. Waiting.
Felix walked along the line. Looking at each of us.
“You thirty represent the best of the best. You’ve proven yourselves capable of handling extreme situations. Making difficult decisions under pressure. Operating at the highest levels of physical and mental performance.
He stopped in front of me.
Sterling. Your performance today was unprecedented. One hundred points from the Cage 13 victory alone. Combined with your scores in other evaluations, you’ve achieved the highest total score in the history of this program.”
I didn’t respond. Just stood at attention.
Felix continued down the line. “The rest of you also performed exceptionally well. You should be proud.”
He reached the end. Turned back to face all of us.
“Training begins in two weeks. You’ll receive your assignments and reporting instructions via secure email within the next forty-eight hours. Until then, you’re on leave. Go home. Rest. See your families.”
He paused.
“One exception. Sterling, you’re dismissed effective immediately. Your academic schedule requires you to return to school by Tuesday morning.
A transport vehicle will take you back tonight.”
I nodded. “Yes sir.”
“Everyone else, you’ll depart tomorrow afternoon. Standard military transport. Any questions?”
Nobody spoke.
“Good. Dismissed.”
The formation broke. People started talking. Congratulating each other.
The north gate was a smaller entrance. Used for individual transports rather than group movements.
A black SUV was parked there. Engine running. Headlights on.
I walked toward it. Expected to see a standard military driver.
But when I got closer, I saw who was behind the wheel.
Derek.
He was leaning against the driver’s side door. Arms crossed. Waiting.
When he saw me approaching, he straightened up. Smiled slightly.
“Heard you got first place. Congratulations.”
“Thanks.
He walked around to the passenger side. Opened the door for me.
“Let me take that. He reached for my gear bag.
I handed it to him without hesitation. He put it in the backseat. Then gestured to the open door.
I climbed in. He closed the door. Walked back around to the driver’s side.
Derek got in. Put on his seatbelt. “You hungry? We can stop somewhere if you want.”
“I’m okay.”
