Chapter 10 You Can’t Talk Sense Into People Determined to Die
“Alert-alert.”
“Multiple S-rank insectoid signatures detected… planetary gravity has become fully unstable… ground magnetic field anomaly detected… all candidate signals are being lost…”
Aboard the Northstar, several screens in the command room suddenly flashed red.
The three instructors stood up almost at the same time.
“S-rank insectoids? How is that possible?”
The Omega instructor spoke in shock.
Zerath had clearly been swept by the Seventh Legion. How could there be so many S-rank insectoids?
“This is not the time to argue over whether it’s possible,” the female Beta instructor said. “Our students are being hunted. We cannot sit here and wait.”
She was the first to board a small starship and fly toward Zerath’s surface.
The Alpha instructor and Omega instructor exchanged a look. After sending a distress signal to the nearest Seventh Legion outpost, they immediately boarded their mechas and headed down to rescue the students.
“What was that sound?”
Inside the mecha, Talia frowned. Goose bumps rose all over her skin.
“Doesn’t matter. Kill this insectoid first.”
Merrick made no attempt to hide his desire to kill the second scorpion.
If he could take down two A-ranks in a row, he would definitely place in the top three of this assessment.
If he also killed the third scorpion, the top rank of the entire assessment would belong to him.
At his command, the giant hound and the brown bear attacked together.
Merrick also raised his blade again.
“Are we about to win?”
Noah covered one ear and asked Julian excitedly.
Julian looked up at Zerath’s yellow sky, then lowered his gaze to the dry, cracked ground.
He felt something approaching.
But it was too fast.
With his current muddled mind and weak body, even his powerful soul had trouble locking onto it.

“Quick. Take your captain and your squadmates and leave.”
“What?”
“Go!”
Noah froze from Julian’s shout, but his body reacted on instinct. He rushed back into cover and yelled at his captain and teammates, “Everybody up! Stop lying there! Julian says we have to leave!”
A first-year teammate tried to argue, “We’re just leaving because he says so?”
But their third-year Beta captain was already on his feet.
“He has no reason to hurt us. Staying here won’t help anyone either. Listen to him. We’re leaving.”
With the captain taking the lead, Noah’s squad quickly gathered.
The Beta captain climbed into a battered mecha and began moving the squad out of the area.
At the same time, Julian’s warning rang through the squad channel.
“Retreat now. I sense something bigger coming.”
“Something bigger?” Merrick sneered. “Bigger than A-rank? Are you saying there’s an S-rank?”
He felt Julian was getting addicted to ordering them around.
Had he forgotten who the captain was?
Talia, already seeing victory right in front of her, instinctively argued too.
“Zerath was cleared by the Seventh Legion ages ago. There can’t be any S-rank insectoids on this planet. Stop trying to scare everyone.”
Hearing Merrick and Talia say that, Cole, who had started to waver, calmed down again.
Then Julian’s cold voice came through the channel.
“You can’t talk sense into people determined to die.”
With that, Julian stepped onto the energy hoverboard Noah had left for him and sped toward the battered mecha ahead.
“Coward.”
Seeing Merrick cut off another Tarric Scorpion’s head, Talia became even harsher when insulting Julian.
But right then, everything changed.
The earth trembled again.
Only this time, instead of dust rising, the ground beneath them cracked inch by inch and began showing. signs of collapse.

“What… what is that?”
Cole stared in horror as a massive golden stinger emerged from the earth. The cold gleam on it carried a faint, deep green light.
As the dust faded, everyone finally saw the insectoid’s true form.
It looked almost identical to a Tarric Scorpion in shape and size.
But this one was covered in dark gold armor, with a deep green stinger. Even the way it stared at them carried an intelligence the Tarric Scorpions did not have.
“Golden Tarric Scorpion…”
Sitting on the sparrowhawk’s back, Silas’s lips moved for a long moment before he finally forced out the words.
An S-rank.
How?
“Retreat!”
Merrick realized it too late and roared the order, almost immediately turning his mecha around.
Humans were already weaker than insectoids of the same rank. Worse, there was still one A-rank Tarric Scorpion alive, and the mini swarm was less than 300 feet away from them.
S-rank insectoids possessed a hive mind.
They were terrifying creatures capable of commanding entire insectoid armies.
Merrick and Talia were inside the mecha. Silas had his sparrowhawk to carry him. Both sides retreated from the battlefield extremely quickly.
Cole had lost his mecha, so all he could do now was climb onto his brown bear again.
He regretted, with every fiber of his being, not listening to Julian earlier.
Luckily, Merrick’s blazing hound was running at the back.
It looked as if it meant to cover their retreat.
“Julian, you’re seriously incredible. How did I never know you were this good?”
Inside the exposed cockpit of the damaged mecha, Noah gripped Julian’s hand in excitement.
Julian: “…”
From the height of their mecha, they could clearly see how miserable Merrick and the others looked right
now.
“With an S-rank spirit form covering them, we should be able to hold out until rescue arrives.”

The Beta captain wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, his hand still gripping the meche controls
“Right”
The other squad members nodded one after another.
But at that moment, something happened that none of them expected.
The S-rank Golden Tarric Scorpion was just about to catch up to the blazing hound when the stinger behind it lashed out in an instant, piercing straight toward the giant hound.
Then the hound’s once-solid body began to fade.
Within a few breaths, it disappeared into the air.
“How is that possible…”
