Chapter 24 The Price of Taking the Fall

The academy administrator thought Julian was simply impossible.
But Anne Moore, one of the three instructors, suddenly cut in.
“You want everything from him while offering nothing in return. Aren’t you embarrassed?”
The administrator immediately glared at Anne.
But she was one of the instructors who had led the assessment. Turning on her openly would not benefi
anyone.
The military officer Julian had insulted earlier smiled instead and looked at Julian once more.
“Cadet Shaw, my name is Harlan Turner. I’m a colonel of the Seventh Legion and the main military officer responsible for this incident.”
Julian did not speak.
He only looked at him with those amber eyes.
His skin was pale as snow, his features delicate.
Harlan had heard long ago that this was the lost young son of the Whitmore family. Now that he saw him in person, he had to admit the boy was striking.
Unfortunately, he was only a Beta.
“The Zerath incident was serious,” Harlan said. “But it was not entirely the Seventh Legion’s fault. Even when I went there afterward to investigate, I still could not determine where those high-rank insectoids
came from.”
His words sounded frank and sincere.
Everyone present knew they were only the warm-up before he tried to persuade Julian.
“But as you’ve seen, the Seventh Legion was unlucky enough to be the one involved. Since it happened on our watch, we must give the public and every victim’s family a satisfactory explanation.”
“So you plan to use me as that explanation?”
Julian saw through him instantly and had no interest in’dancing around the subject.
Harlan had to admit he admired Julian’s bluntness.
So he decided to be direct too.
“As long as you admit you deserted under fire and cooperate with us in shifting public attention, the Legion will handle everything afterward. We will also provide compensation generous enough to satisfy you.”

At this point, the people across from Julian had basically shown their hand
They did not want the truth.
They wanted the conclusion that suited them.
And they were willing to pay handsomely for it.
If Julian agreed, everyone would be happy.
Julian said, “For example?”
At the boy’s question, Harlan immediately waved to his adjutant.
The adjutant placed a list in front of Julian.
A luxury private villa on Calvara, a famous resort world.
Several million in cash.
Special assistance with changing his name and identity.
“Of course.” Harlan added with a polite smile, “after accepting these gifts, you must withdraw from the Imperial Military Academy immediately. You will also be forbidden from entering the central star sector for quite some time.”
Every movement he made was courteous.
But beneath his words was a force that allowed no refusal.
Harlan thought victory was already in his hands.
Then he saw Julian smile.
The boy’s eyes were bright, his teeth white, and his mouth absolutely merciless.
“What about him?”
Julian was referring, of course, to Merrick sitting across from him.
At the mention of himself, Merrick, who had been coughing from anger earlier, actually laughed.
“Do you know who provided that villa on Calvara? And those millions in cash?”
Julian did not even bother looking at Merrick.
He simply turned back to Harlan.
“So his family provides the goods, your Legion gets the reputation fix, and I take this pathetic hush-money payout, destroy my future, and let the entire StarNet hate me forever?”
“Cadet Shaw, there’s no need to be so sharp.”
Harlan shook his head, clearly seeing nothing wrong with the proposal.

4 The Price of Taking the Fall
“As a Beta from Class F of the Imperial Military Academy’s Mecha Engineering Department, even if you enter the battlefield later, it will be difficult for you to earn significant military credit. A real military post would be even farther out of reach.”
To put it less politely, he believed Julian should take the offer while it was still on the table.
There were countless Betas in the Empire.
Even if Julian had tested into the Imperial Military Academy, to men like Harlan, he was still just a future foot soldier.
Instead of becoming a low-ranking soldier one day, why not take the payout now, withdraw from school. and live the comfortable life he had always dreamed of?
