Theory had filled the first half of the semester. Now the practical portion was starting.
“Did you hear? For the final, we have to make five C-class energy blocks. At least one has to be high-grad
Leo Grant, the strongest-looking Beta in Class F, scratched his head so hard he looked ready to go bald. “We’ll manage if we study properly and watch carefully.”
Samuel Crane, the bookworm, pushed up his round glasses and gave a very scholarly answer.
He and Leo lived next door to Julian and Noah. Back when Julian ignored everyone, Noah used to go around with those two.
“Don’t comfort me. I haven’t even held an extraction stylus, and I only half understand reactor theory. I’m dead later.”
Noah was cheerful by nature. He did not mind admitting he was worse than his friends.
The moment he finished, a passing Beta slammed into him.
“Class F really is Class F. Look at you. A C-class energy block already has you panicking. In Class A, everyone can make one by now.”
After hitting Noah, the Beta started mocking them openly.
Noah and the others were baffled.

“You’ve got it wrong, man. Julian didn’t mean it that way. He just didn’t want to leave our class or Ms. Moore.”
Noah was good at smoothing things over, so he stepped forward to talk.
The other Beta was not there to be reasonable
He shoved Noah.
Class F had spent the morning training. Not one of them had steady legs left.
Noah hit the floor.
“That’s too far!”
Leo, broad and strong enough to pass for a Mecha Piloting Beta at first glance, stepped forward first.
The other side did not feel guilty at all.
Instead, they gathered in twos and threes and laughed.
“This is Class F? One push and he drops. How is Ms. Moore supposed to train them?”
“Right? Ms. Moore used to call us lazy and say we’d regret it on the battlefield. She should look at this class first.”
“I didn’t use any strength. I really didn’t!”
The Beta who had shoved Noah laughed the loudest.
Class F clenched their fists.
But after the first wave of anger came something worse.
Embarrassment.
The Imperial Military Academy respected strength. Class A students naturally outranked them.
They wanted to fight back.
But could they afford to offend Class A?
Maybe they should just let it go.
As Class F hesitated, Julian pulled Noah up.
Then he moved.
He pushed Leo aside, stepped forward, and kicked the Beta who had shoved Noah square in the chest.
The Beta had been laughing one second.
The next, he crashed into his friends. Unfortunately, those people were not steady either, and several of

“Shit, that hurts. Nolan, you okay?”
They groaned as they scrambled up. Nolo Pierce, the one Julian had kicked, clutched his chest with both hands. His face had gone pale.
Julian had held back.
He had not wanted him dead.
He only wanted him to hurt.
