Chapter 436 Wynn Sterling

The Demonflower Blood Mantis, Giant-Jawed Stag Beetle, and Blazingwing Gold Scorpion had barely begun squirming toward the fighting when humanity drove the front line almost to their feet.

The swarm was collapsing far faster than any of the three had imagined.

Orion had expected the royal insectoids to enter the battle. The instant they appeared, Ruin, Emberwing, and Dragonlord descended in front of them as though the meeting had been scheduled.

Once, the arrival of a 3S-class royal insectoid had been enough to cast a shadow over all humanity. Now the three could only remain trapped behind human opposition and watch their own swarm being slaughtered before their eyes.

The positions of attacker and defender had reversed.

Nothing could have made that clearer.

That night, on the capital world, a nun crossed the top floor of the Empire Tower with an ancient, cryptic Bible held against her chest.

She walked deeper into Starlight Summit, one of the finest restaurants in the Empire, every step measured and devout.

Frameless windows wrapped around the entire dining room, capturing the capital’s lights below. Tables seemed to float inside precisely focused halos, while piano music dissolved into. the air. The restaurant resembled a minimalist palace suspended between the city and the night sky, its quiet splendor mirrored by the stars beyond the glass.

Even that brilliance dimmed beside the man seated at the window.

“Sit.”

His voice ran clear as spring water. His skin was smooth ivory, warmed by a healthy trace of rose. A smile rested in his pale eyes, their color as soft as diluted ink. Whenever he focused on someone, his gaze carried such gentle attention that it created the illusion of deep affection.

Had Julian been there, he would have recognized those eyes. They could make even a glance at a stray dog look devoted.

They looked much like Orion’s whenever Orion watched him.

Beautiful. Almost unfairly so.

Julian probably would not have remembered the man’s name. He would have forgotten that the man was one of the Empire’s biggest stars, an accomplished actor adored by celebrities and nobles alike.

He would have forgotten that the man liked getting fucked.

And he certainly would have forgotten that his name was Wynn Sterling.

“It has been a long time, sir.”

The nun smiled. Her eyes remained cold, yet the reverence in them made it seem as though she were gazing upon her priest and waiting to receive his teachings.

Wynn treated her with far less ceremony.

His collar hung open. Red marks covered his neck, suggesting he had just finished an extremely intense round of “sparring,” and a languid weariness clung to him.

Too many partners.

Not ideal.

Still, this body was undeniably exceptional. Humans flocked to it without restraint.

Wynn’s satisfaction did not last. The old hive consciousness suddenly convulsed, wrenching him out of the new one and forcing his mind to descend into the former network.

“Damn it!”

The moment his awareness arrived, news crashed into him: his Calamity Swarm, was being beaten like a pack of dogs and losing ground by the second.

His face changed.

“Useless trash!”

The smile vanished from his eyes. Their false tenderness became vertical pupils filled with predatory cold, like the gaze of a beast choosing its next meal.

Anyone else across the table might have jumped up in terror and fled without looking back.

The nun calmly lifted her wine instead. Her red lips curved, and her bright eyes remained tranquil as water.

“What could have made you this angry?”

“I should have killed Orion when I had the chance!”

Wynn narrowed his eyes. Murderous intent flooded those chilling pupils.

The creature had once gone to the front personally to supervise the battle. Orion, Orion’s younger uncle, and General Andrew had blown it apart, severely injuring a body already weakened by constant reproduction.

Otherwise…

It would never have been forced to watch that wolf tear space open and carry Orion away before its eyes.

Orion’s psychic sea had already been shattered. It had assumed that entering spatial turbulence would either kill him or leave him permanently ruined, incapable of threatening the insectoids ever again.

Instead…

Orion had returned. His strength had advanced in ways Wynn could not explain, and the entire military had risen with him.

Then there was Julian.

Wynn ground his teeth.

Judging by what it had just witnessed, the three failures at the front would not delay humanity for many more days.

Their plan to pin the military at the border had already been ripped open at one corner by Orion.

Understanding his concern, the nun set down her Bible. Her smile did not weaken in the slightest.

“There is no need to trouble yourself so much. If pressure from outside can no longer hold them, we will apply it from within. Human stupidity will exceed anything you can imagine.”

“Aren’t you human?” Wynn asked with a sneer.

At times, even the creature could not understand the woman before it.

She rejected her own species, longed to move closer to the insectoids, and devoted everything she possessed to serving them. A complete madwoman.

Oh.

Humanity had more than one lunatic.

The woman across from him was one. So was the man hidden deep within the Imperial palace, who held a position among humans equal to Wynn’s position among the insectoids.

“Am I?”

The nun looked toward the stars with almost childlike confusion. Then something seemed to occur to her, and she smiled.

“I stopped being human a very long time ago.”

Wynn said nothing.

Insane.

Still, it was gracious toward lunatics willing to work for it. Wynn raised his chin and looked down at her as though granting an audience.

was naked and violent, enough to drive her beyond reason and make her forget everything else.

“I want Julian.”

She did not explain a plan.

She simply stated her demand with absolute force.

“Give Julian to me. I promise I will create the successor you desire most. He is perfect, whether as an Omega or as a Brood Mother…”

“You called him a failure before,” Wynn said coldly.

The Whitmore bloodline showed extraordinary compatibility with insectoid fusion. The insectoids had targeted Julian while he was still a fetus inside his mother’s womb.

The madwoman had failed.

Julian had been a defective product.

That had been proven eighteen years earlier.

“Sir, my skill was inadequate then. That was why I failed to complete our plan. But I am not the same researcher anymore. I have succeeded since then. I raised the young prince very well, didn’t I?” the nun argued feverishly.
