am an adult. I am your general. My decisions are mine to bear. Respect that. Do not rush off to die and call it loyalty to me. Understood?”

The reckless man stood stiffly.

Ethan’s eyes were bloodshot.

Caleb lowered his head.

“Answer.”

Orion waited until Laurie Rick finally forced out a hoarse, “Understood.”

After Laurie spoke, Caleb, Ethan, and the rest answered one by one.

They buried those dangerous thoughts for now.

Only then did Helen, who had been unable to interrupt, finally speak.

“But, Orion, your psychic sea is too serious to ignore. If this continues, you may never see Ruin again.”

“That’s fine.”

Orion answered without pause.

At that moment, the man’s beautiful, blade-sharp face looked carved from ice.

Helen could not find the slightest warmth in his eyes.

Of course.

Orion Ashford Mulholland had always been this way.

A cold Alpha who would not even acknowledge his emperor father.

Why would he be gentle to Helen?

“Caleb. Take everyone out.”

“Yes.”

Caleb led the officers out of the ward.

Helen stayed.

An Omega’s instinct made his body tense, but he did not retreat. He only looked at Orion with stubborn, ice-blue eyes.

Then Orion’s wrist terminal lit up again.

The Alpha had been looking at Helen one second earlier.

Now Helen had vanished from his attention completely.

Julian: “The whole dorm district is cheering for the general. They won’t sleep, so I can’t sleep either…”

Julian: “Little black cat rolling in bed.jpg”

Orion was about to reply when another message arrived.

Julian: “Your pheromone cologne smells really good.”

Julian: “Little black cat says thank you.jpg”

Orion’s fingers paused.

Did this little Omega know what it meant to compliment an Alpha’s pheromones?

Sect Leader Ashford Good. Tell me when you run out.”

Julian did not respond at once.

Orion set down the wrist terminal and finally returned his attention to Helen.

“Helen. Tell me the truth. You wanted Caleb and the others to hunt a 35S insectoid for you. Was that truly to heal me?”

“Orion… what are you saying?”

Helen stared at him as if wounded.

Golden hair, blue eyes, an empire-wide reputation for beauty.

Most people, when looked at by Helen like this, would immediately wonder whether they had wronged him.

Orion did not.

He did not know whether the things he remembered were a dream.

He only knew that in that version of events, Julian had never appeared.

Ruin had vanished on Zerath.

By the time Orion woke, nearly two-thirds of his old subordinates were dead.

They had died hunting a 3S insectoid.

Laurie Rick.

Ethan Cross.

Many others who had followed him for years.

They had gone for his shattered psychic sea.

They had not come back.

In that memory, Helen had cried at his bedside and said he had failed to stop them.

He had said he never should have told them the method existed.

But today, Orion had watched it happen.

Helen was guiding them.

He wanted Ethan and the others to hunt that 3$ insectoid.

Maybe he wanted to raise his own rank

Maybe he wanted Orion old forces weakened so Harold could swallow the Second and Third Legions more easily.

Either way, Helen had stepped over Orion’s line.

*I’ll ask once more, Helen Rockefeller. Are you truly trying to save me?”

Every word came out clear and heavy.

His emerald eyes were deep and frozen, carrying a pressure he had never needed to learn.

Helen stepped back half a pace.

Panic finally cracked through his expression.

Before this, Orion had never been affectionate, but he had always been proper.

Now…

“I really want to save you, Orion. Do you not trust me anymore?”

Helen lifted his eyes again.

The untouchable elegance Julian had seen earlier was gone.

Only grievance remained, soft and convincing, as if he were the one being hurt.

“All right.”

Orion withdrew his gaze.

Helen relaxed.

Then Orion spoke calmly.

“Our engagement existed because I was the empire’s only innate 3S Alpha, and you were the natural-born Omega closest to S-class.”

Helen’s head snapped up.

Something was coming.

He could not stop it.

“Now I carry the Brood Mother’s psychic toxin. My psychic sea is damaged. I cannot summon my spirit form. My rank will fall. I am no longer the best Alpha candidate for you. There is no need for either of us

to continue,”

“Orion…”

Helen tried to speak.

Chapter 49-Engagement Broken

Orion had already called Caleb and the others back in.

“Notify the Second and Third Legions. From this moment on, I, Orion Ashford Mulholland, dissolve my engagement with Helen Rockefeller. Because of my damaged psychic sea, inability to summon my spirit form, and related conditions, I will temporarily withdraw from direct command. Major General Caleb Hayes will handle all affairs of both legions.

He did not ask for Helen’s agreement.

He announced it.

Most of the officers were shocked.

Except for Caleb, none of them had expected Orion to end the engagement so suddenly.

But no one spoke for Helen.

They accepted Orion’s order in silence.

“Lord Helen, please.”

Caleb gestured toward the door.

Helen wanted to push past him and say something to Orion.
