Chapter 5 Identity Verified The Northstar Awaits Your Journey
“Warning.”
“All team drop coordinates for this assessment have been confirmed. Starship bay doors will open shortly All candidates, return to your squads and prepare to board.”
Julian’s words had left everyone at the spaceport in stunned silence until Murphy, the academy’s central AL spoke in its cold mechanical voice.
Caelan Rookwood could only take a deep breath and force down whatever lecture he had been about to give.
In the end, he left Julian with one icy sentence.
“You’d better mean that.”
Julian: “…”
And why would that be any of your business?
The nearly thousand squads soon finished assembling.
The massive starship they were about to board, the “Northstar,” slowly came to life.
It had a sleek, shuttle-like silhouette, dark gray armor, and a raised metal spine running across its back. Weapons and sensors lined both sides, making the ship look like the ridge of a sleeping dragon.
“Identity verified. The Northstar awaits your journey.”
Julian followed Merrick and the others up the boarding ramp, took out his student ID, and passed through the checkpoint in order.
For everyone else from this interstellar world, boarding a starship was nothing new.
For Julian, everything in front of him felt strangely fascinating.
“So? First time on a field assessment this big?” Cole leaned close again, his tone carrying the teasing softness people used on small pets. “Stick with me later. I don’t mind carrying you through it.”
Cole suddenly realized Julian was actually good-looking.
Black hair. Snow-pale skin. Delicate features. Especially those amber eyes-clear, light, and bright, like a piece of sunlit glass from some old myth.
Omegas were rare. Before powerful Alphas bonded with a highly compatible Omega, many of them kept Beta lovers.
“I mind.”
Julian stepped away, his pretty brows drawing together.
He could faintly smell something sharp and peppery coming from the Alpha. His already exhausted body

rejected it on instinct.
Cole bit the inside of his cheek, visibly annoyed.
Before he could snap, Merrick spoke first.
“Look at him. He’s obsessed with Caelan Rookwood. What exactly do you think you are?”
Merrick sounded as if he was defending Julian…
Julian knew perfectly well that he was just trying to start trouble.
Sure enough, Cole’s gaze quickly cooled, and something nasty flickered beneath it.
Julian did not care.
At the rear of the starship, four enormous main thrusters ignited. Blinding white columns of light erupted. carrying the Northstar and all the assessment candidates into space.
After entering the starship lounge, Julian finally had time to open his wrist terminal and check their destination.
Zerath was a planet rich in rare minerals. Its surface was covered with factories, refineries, and orbital elevators. It had once been one of the Empire’s major industrial hearts.
Not long ago, however, the front line had been breached by the insectoids, and Zerath had become one of several contested worlds.
It had only been reclaimed recently after the warfront was pushed back.
Because the military was short on manpower, planets like this-already given a rough sweep by the army- had become assessment sites for the major military academies.
After getting a basic sense of the situation, Julian entered a stasis pod and fell asleep.
When he opened his eyes again, a massive dull-yellow planet had appeared outside the window.
Then came a terrifying sense of weightlessness, followed by Murphy’s familiar mechanical voice.
“Zerath landing sequence initiated. All candidates, proceed to the shuttle deck immediately. After boarding and system self-checks are complete, depart for your assigned mission coordinates.”
Julian shouldered his tool case and quickly boarded the squad’s assigned shuttle with the others.
A total of three thousand squads were taking part in thiş assessment. Among them, 62 core squads would serve as sector anchors and be dropped into the centers of Zerath’s 62 regions.
The remaining squads would be scattered around those 62 core squads so they could support one another in case of danger.
With Merrick piloting, the shuttle lifted off smoothly.
