Chapter 7 This Squad Is Rotten Not Even a Dog Would Join
“Ah!
As Talia’s piercing scream rang out, the giant cockroach opened its mouth and let out a roar. Dense. writhing mouthparts twisted inside its jaws, and a thick, rancid stench rolled out with it.
“It’s fine. Just a C-rank insectoid.
While Merrick comforted Talia, Cole had already stepped forward, rolling his wrists.
Julian saw a flash of light beside him. A brown bear took shape in an instant, then expanded at a visible speed.
“Go. Crush the little bug that dared to scare Miss Talia.”
The brown bear roared and charged at the giant insect with surprising agility. One massive paw slammed down on the creature’s head, sending black-green blood spraying through the air.
In a single exchange, the insectoid’s head was smashed apart.
So that was a spirit form.
Julian watched the scene with a complicated look.
From the original owner’s memories, he knew Betas were called ordinary because although Betas did possess psychic power, theirs was usually weak.
Aspirit form was the advanced manifestation of psychic power.
“There’s more than one C-rank. I can see a lot of insectoids heading our way!”
Silas’s sparrowhawk spirit form shot into the sky, its sharp eyes sweeping across the area below.
“Silas, protect your sister. Cole, with me.”
“Got it.”
The assessment had officially begun. Every insectoid they killed would count toward their military credit.
Julian raised his hand and drew his high-energy laser pistol, but before he could aim at the nearest giant insectoid, a huge shadow wrapped in flames burst into his line of sight.
It was a blazing hound. With one leap, it pinned the giant insectoid into the mud.
An S-rank spirit form.
Julian took a breath. His laser pistol snapped up, and the thin beam of light swelled the moment it left the muzzle, accelerating straight into another insectoid’s right eye.
The hit insectoid shrieked. Black-green blood poured from its eye before the brown bear finished it off with
one swat.

But insectoids were called insectoids for a reason. Their numbers were endless, and group attacks were them favorite method.
“Multiple B-rank insectoids detected at the rear of the squad. Preliminary judgment: a mini swarm is forming”
Silas stood beside Talia, his expression grave.
As a core squad, they had landed in the most insectoid-dense part of the region. A mini swarm forming wat only a matter of time.
“A few B-ranks?”
Merrick’s cold laugh came through the comms.
“Blow them apart.”
The moment he finished speaking, two insectoid-sized armored frames launched into the air and instantly wrapped around Merrick and Cole.
Oh.
In this world, they were not called constructs.
They were called mechas.
With the two mechas joining the fight, the squad’s speed in clearing C-rank insectoids doubled. Julian soon found himself facing the B-ranks Silas had mentioned.
Against the planet’s sunset-yellow light, the dark green insectoids with thin wings on their backs stood out sharply.
When several of them rose into the air at once, Julian could almost see them back in the mortal world, sweeping over farmland in massive swarms, useless for anything except eating every crop in sight.
Wasn’t this just a goddamn locust?
But while the B-rank insectoids looked like locusts, their combat power was on a completely different level from C-ranks.
The giant bear swung a paw at one. The insectoid vibrated its wings and dodged instantly, while another dove straight into the bear’s head.
“Sh*t!”
Cole spat hard, then drove his brown mecha forward and threw a punch, knocking the huge insectoid’s
head aside.
Compared with Cole’s struggle, Merrick, as an S-rank, was clearly having a much easier time.
The blazing hound roared and breathed fire. Any insectoid touched by the flames quickly collapsed, rolling across the ground while letting out the insectoids’ unique, agonized shrieks.
“That’s it?”

Merrick raised an eyebrow, as if mocking Cole for struggling.
“Silas, do I really have to keep standing here? My dress is dirty.”
At the back of the battlefield. Talia pinched a corner of her lace dress, displeased by the barely visible smudge on it.
“It’s fine. Someone will clean it for you later.”
While Silas comforted Talia, Merrick and Cole had already finished the fight together and begun sorting through the spoils.
Just as humans were delicious prey to insectoids, insectoid cores, carapaces, and mandibles were valuable resources for the Empire’s energy systems and weapons manufacturing.
Of course, while Talia and Silas could get a share just by standing there, Julian was practically invisible in this squad.
Invisible when it was time to divide materials.
Suddenly visible when there was work to do.
“Considering you’re only a Class F freshman. I won’t ask you to inspect and maintain our mechas. But you can clean Talia’s dress, can’t you?”
After the previous fight, Merrick had fully established his authority in the squad, and his tone had become even less polite.
Then he heard Julian answer lazily.
“No.”
Merrick’s brows drew together.
Having his authority challenged by a useless Beta right after establishing it nearly pushed the malice in his chest past the limit..
