Chapter 207

the

The week began with a pile of urgent documents requiring my signature contracts that needed to be hand-delivered consortium. With unfamiliar faces wandering around the Lockhart Digital offices lately, I didn’t trust any of the couriers. So I did it

myself.

I’d planned to use the errand to confront my father again, press him for more about that damned contract with Chun Kit. But, conveniently, he was “too busy” to see me.

Cursing beneath my breath, I headed toward the elevators only to find them blocked off.

“Apologies, sir,” one of the maintenance workers said with a sheepish smile. “You’ll need to head down two floors and use the eas wing elevators. These won’t be operational for another hour.”

I gave a curt nod and took the stairs, descending four flights before veering into the narrow passageway between two meeting rooms. It was a shortcut. One I knew well.

But just as I neared the other elevator bank, I heard a voice sharp, angry.

“If you think I’ll help you after everything you and your stepfather have pulled, you’re out of your mind,” Renzo growled.

I stopped, stepping back into the shadows of the doorway. Quietly, I moved closer.

“We had an agreement!” Zinnia shot back, her voice unmistakable.

“I never said I wouldn’t keep my end.”

“Oh no?” she spat. “And just how are you planning to do that, Zinnia? Because Theron isn’t going to fall in love with you. He’s not giving up the consortium.”

“My stepfather has a plan,” she said coolly. “All you have to do is keep me updated”

“No.” Renzo’s tone was like ice. “I was stupid to trust you once. It won’t happen again.”

“At least give me her address.”

“Whose address?”

“You know damn well who I mean, That bitch. I want to know where she lives.”

My fists clenched as fury surged through me. But I wasn’t the only one fuming.

“Stay away from Ami,” Renzo snapped. “This isn’t a game.”

Chapter 207

Zinnia scoffed. “What is she, your new obsession? Does she have some kind of fan club now?”

“This is your last warning. If you or anyone working for you touch her, I will make you regret it.”

A strange mix of gratitude and jealousy twisted in my chest. It stung hearing Ami’s name from his mouth, but I couldn’t deny the relief that someone else had her back.

The sharp click of Zinnia’s heels signaled her retreat. I waited until the sound faded before stepping out into the now-empty

corridor.

Maybe it was time to consider a truce with Renzo after all…

The rest of the day was a blur of phone calls and emails. By nine, all I wanted was to see Ami. I sent her a message and coordinated the car swap with Merritt. Just a few more messages to send, and I’d finally be free to leave.

That’s when the door slammed open.

“I figured you’d still be here,” Zinnia said, striding into my office like she owned the place, her crimson smile smug and uninvited.

“Do you ever knock?” I growled.

She came to a stop in front of my desk and folded her arms. “Why should I? You’re my fiancé. We shouldn’t have secrets.”

I drew a breath, trying to restrain the urge to hurl something. “This is my office. It’s where I work. Don’t ever come in here unannounced again.”

She ignored me and dropped a folder onto my desk. “Relax. This won’t take long. Just open it.”

I reluctantly reached for the folder and flipped it open. Photographs. A man in his late forties, curly hair, sharp features. The first image showed him holding documents. The second showed him with my mother.

They looked dated easily ten years old.

“Who is this?” I asked, eyes narrowing.

“His name is Kincade Thayer,” she said. “He used to work for your mother. Helped her gather information about you, about the people you spent time with.”

My brow arched. “And?”

“Keep looking.”
