Call her mom
Grace
I had to bite my lips to know if I was dreaming or not. But even when I felt the sharp sting of pain, I didn’t wake
This wasn’t a dream. This was reality. A horrifying, humiliating, soul–crushing reality that was getting worse with every passing second.
Everyone’s eyes were on me, Vivian’s, Landon’s, and even some of the nearby guests who had paused their conversations to stare at the scene unfolding before them. I could practically feel their curiosity burning into my skin.
I looked at Adam. No, Mr. Reed.
I swallowed hard, my throat dry, my heart pounding so fast it felt like it might actually jump out of my chest.
How had I not seen it?
Now that I looked closely, it was obvious. The same sharp gaze, the same authority in his voice, the same air that made people move aside without being told to.
He was exactly like Apollo.
Oh, God.
I wanted to slap myself. The signs were all there, so many of them, but honestly, could anyone blame me? How was I supposed to know that the sweet old man from the cafe, the one who’d beaten the hell out of Charles and teased me for working too hard, was Adam Reed, one of the wealthiest men in the country, and the father of the man I’d been sleeping with?
If humiliation could kill, I’d be dead right now. And to make things worse, during one of our cafe talks, I’d complained about Apollo. I’d said things like he’s impossible, he works too much, and sometimes he reminds me of the devil.
I was dead. Absolutely, officially dead.
There was no way I was keeping my job after this. My career was over. My dignity? Long gone.
He must’ve already connected the dots. He probably knew exactly who I was and was just waiting to see me panic. Maybe this was revenge. As my brain spiraled between run away and faint dramatically, I felt a hand touch my shoulder.
I flinched. When I looked up, it was Landon, wearing a fake smile.
Adam’s gaze snapped to him immediately, sharp, cold, and so dangerous that even I froze.
“Hey, Grace,” Landon said, his voice oily and confident. “Why don’t you introduce us?”
I wanted to shove him away. I wanted to scream, not now, you idiot! Couldn’t he see I was dying inside?
When I didn’t answer, Landon turned to Adam, completely unaware, or maybe just stupid. “Hello, Mr. Reed. I’m Landon, Grace’s superior in the company. I didn’t know Grace knew someone like you, sir. If I had known, I would’ve made things easier for her. She wouldn’t have to stress herself with work.”
My eyes widened in disbelief. What the hell was he saying?
He kept going, smiling like a fool. “Anyway, since I know now, I’ll make sure she’s well taken care of, sir. I will

“Let go of her, you idiot!” Adam’s voice boomed through the hall.
Landon froze, his hand still on my shoulder, his fake smile crumbling.
“Sir?”
Adam’s gaze turned deadly, all warmth gone. “Did you not hear me? Let. Go. Of. Her.”
Landon’s hand trembled but he still didn’t move fast enough. Adam’s expression hardened, and he turned slightly to his secretary. “Get rid of this insect.”
“Yes, sir.”
Before anyone could even process what was happening, the secretary strode forward, grabbed Landon by the arm, and yanked him back so hard that he stumbled, nearly falling over. Gasps rippled through the hall.
I just stood there, frozen, staring at Adam.
This wasn’t the kind, gentle man who smiled at me over coffee. This was Mr. Reed, the man who could command an entire room with a single look. And for some insane reason, he’d just defended me.
Everything happened so fast that for a moment, I didn’t even understand what was going on. His eyes locked on Landon, and the entire room seemed to hold its breath.
“Who are you,” he said, his voice low and cold, “to touch her?”
Landon froze.
Mr. Reed took a step forward, his glare so intense that event flinched. “Don’t you know someone like you shouldn’t even touch her? You’re not even worth the dirt on her shoes. What made you think you can do whatever you want?”
I just stood there, completely stunned. I’d never seen Adam angry before and it was scary.
“That stupid son of mine,” he muttered sharply, “I wonder what he was doing, letting people as stupid as you work in this company.”
Landon opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
Then, as if realizing that I was watching him, Mr. Reed glanced at me. I must’ve looked terrified because his expression softened immediately. He cleared his throat and said, voice quieter this time, “You–just get out. I don’t want to see your face tonight.”
Landon blinked rapidly. “S–Sir, I-”
One of the other managers cut him off sharply. “Leave, Lanon.”
Landon’s jaw clenched. His face flushed an ugly shade of re as he turned toward the exit. I thought it was over until Vivian spoke up.
“Wait.”
Everyone turned to look at her.
Landon frowned. “What?”
Vivian’s lips curved into a small, knowing smile. “It seems like you’re forgetting something.”
He blinked in confusion. “What the hell are you talking about?”
Vivian crossed her arms. “Call her mom.”

Landon stared at her, completely thrown off. “What?”
“You heard me,” she said sweetly. “Call her mom. You said it yourself, didn’t you? That if Grace ever knew someone important, you’d call her mom. And unless you’re saying Mr. Reed isn’t important enough, you’d better keep your word.”
A low murmur rippled through the room. Everyone was staring at Landon now.
His face turned even redder, almost matching his tie. His lips trembled as he glanced between Vivian, me, and Mr. Reed, who was watching with an amused, very unimpressed look.
Finally, Landon clenched his fists and muttered through gritted teeth, “F–Fine.”
He turned toward me. His pride looked like it was physically choking him as he forced out the word.
“…Mom.”
For a second, I couldn’t help it. I just stared at him, speechless. Then, slowly, the corner of my mouth lifted.
Okay, maybe I was a little happy.
Even though I had no idea what my future looked like right now, but seeing the man who’d been belittling me completely humiliated was satisfying.
Landon grunted and stormed off, his shoulders stiff with embarrassment.
When he was gone, the tension in the air seemed to loosen. Mr. Reed turned toward Vivian, a faint smile replacing his earlier fury. “I see you’re a rather smart woman.”
Vivian blinked, clearly surprised that he was addressing her at all. “Ah, yes, sir. I apologize for the incident.”
Mr. Reed chuckled, his tone gentler now. “No problem.” He turned to me then, eyes softening again. “Can I take Grace?”
I opened my mouth, but Vivian quickly nodded. “Of course, Mr. Reed.” She smiled at me, a little shaky but kind. ” You can go, Grace. I’ll handle things with the rest of the team.”
Mr. Reed offered his arm toward me like an old–fashioned gentleman, and though my heart was pounding, I nodded and stepped beside him.
As we walked away, I could feel everyone’s eyes burning into my back.
All I could think was, how the hell did my life get this complicated?
