Please Me Daddy (Gracie) novel Chapter 136

He was Apollo Reed’s father

Grace

Beautiful, isn’t it?Mr. Aiden’s voice pulled me out of my daze.

I turned to him. He was watching the crowd, a small, satisfied smile playing on his lips.

Thank God you recommended the big hall for it,he said. If we’d gone with the smaller one, we’d be drowning in complaints right now.

I nodded, trying to hide how offbalance I felt. Yes, it’s really beautiful.

He gave a brief nod, still smiling, then gestured for me to follow. Alright. Let’s go. Let me introduce you to some people.

We crossed the hall, weaving through servers and clusters of elegantly dressed guests until we stopped near a small group of sharply dressed people standing off to the side. Mr. Aiden paused beside them. You guys, this is Grace, the intern. Most of you probably already know her.

One of the women in the group, probably in her midthirties, turned toward me, and smiled. Of course we do, everyone in the company knows who she is. This is the smart intern you always seem to praise. Her eyes ran over me briefly before she added, How are you, dear? You look lovely tonight.

My face heated up instantly. Thank you.

Aiden chuckled beside me, clearly amused, then gestured toward the others. These are some of the company’s key managers,he explained. They’re here to monitor the event and step in if anything goes wrong. I believe you’re capable, that’s why I brought you along.

Before I could respond, a man in the group chuckled. I heard you trusted her, but I didn’t know you trusted her that much. You don’t even let fulltime employees attend these things in case they make mistakes, and yet you brought an intern?

Aiden smirked, unbothered. You’ll eventually see why,he said then turned back to me, Anyway, you guys take care of her. I have something to handle.

The group nodded, some waving him off as he disappeared into the crowd.

As soon as Mr. Aiden left, one of the men standing nearby turned toward me with a smug little smile.

I’ve actually heard a lot about you, Grace,he said.

The tone of his voice wasn’t flattering, it was taunting. I raised an eyebrow, glancing at him, and immediately knew his type. He was the kind of man who thought his title made him untouchable, and superior to everyone around him, even when he was standing right beside them. He looked at me with disdain, like I didn’t deserve to be in the same room. And before he even opened his mouth again, I already knew whatever came next wasn’t going to be good.

I heard quite a lot of things from your coworker, Piper,he said, his smirk widening.

Ah. Of course. I had to stop myself from rolling my eyes. Piper again. That woman had more free time than I thought.

Before I could respond, or even decide if it was worth responding at all, the same woman from before, the one who’d complimented me earlier, quickly jumped in, her tone warm and protective.

I heard you helped a lot during the event planning, she said, clearly trying to change the subject.

Relieved, I turned to her. I wouldn’t say that. We all contributed ideas,

You’re so humble, she said, before leaning in slightly. Since you’re with us tonight, let me give you a little advice.

I nodded, listening carefully.

Try to avoid the guests, she said. Don’t talk to them unless you absolutely have to. Most of them are arrogant and love making a scene over the smallest things just because they can. The more important they are, the more you should stay out of their way. As long as you keep your distance, they won’t bother you. People like that rarely notice anyone they think is beneath them.

But you never know, you might be able to network with someone influential. Anything can happen. She added. Before I could thank her, the same man from earlier scoffed. He crossed his arms and said, Don’t get her hopes up, Vivian. Why would someone influential talk to an intern? If there’s a pyramid, she’s at the bottom.

Vivian shot him a glare, but he kept going. And besides, what quality does she even have that would attract anyone important? Aiden made a mistake bringing her here He should’ve brought Piper. She’s beautiful, intelligent, and good with a lot of things.

I felt my jaw tighten slightly, but I kept my face neutral. There was no point giving him the satisfaction of a

reaction.

Landon, don’t be an asshole,Vivian snapped.

Landon shrugged, completely unbothered. What? I’m just telling the truth.

Vivian turned back to me, her expression apologetic. I’m sorry about this, Grace.

I shook my head, forcing a small smile. No, it’s okay. I’m not offended, and like you said, you never know what might happen. I might network with someone influential.

Landon rolled his eyes and snorted. Yeah, right. If you do that, then I’ll call you Mom.

I ignored Landon.

He was my superior, sure, but from the way he spoke about Piper, it was obvious they were close. Probably more than close. Whatever was going on between them wasn’t my business, and honestly, talking to him was a waste of

breath.

I turned my attention back to the hall, letting my gaze sweep over the crowd of powerful faces. Just then my phone rang and every head in the room turned toward me.

Oh, for crying out loud.

I froze, heat rushing to my face. I’d forgotten to put my phone on silent.

Landon, of course, wasted no time. For someone who’s supposed to be so good at her job, she doesn’t even know the basics,he muttered, loud enough for everyone to hear

I swallowed my irritation. I’m sorry,I said, bowing my head slightly. I forgot to mute my phone.

Vivian gave me a kind smile. It’s okay, dear. If it’s important, take it.

I nodded, glancing down at the screen.

Adam.

For a moment, I hesitated, should I answer? If he was calling, it probably meant he was looking for me, and I did promise to meet him. Sighing quietly, I turned slightly away from the group and answered in a whisper.

Hey, Adam,I murmured. Are you here yet?

His calm voice came through the line. Yes, I am here, dear

Oh, I’m kind of working right now. When I’m done, I’ll come find you, okay?

There was a short pause, and then he said simply, No need

No need?

I’ve already seen you,Adam said. I’ll come to you.

He hung up before I could respond. I blinked at the phone, confused. He’s seen me?

I was still trying to make sense of it when someone beside me gasped. Oh my God,Vivian whispered, eyes wide. That’s Mr. Reed, the boss’s father.

Landon muttered under his breath, “Shit. I didn’t expect him to come today. He hardly ever shows up at events like this.He looked both nervous and excited, straightening his tie. Do you think I should go talk to him? Maybe network a little?

Vivian shook her head sharply. Don’t. Mr. Reed doesn’t like strangers approaching him. And let’s be real, he’s out of everyone’s leagues. He’s the most important man in his entire hall. He won’t pay attention to anyone.

I barely registered what they were saying. I was about to call Adam back when a familiar voice came from behind

  1. me.

Can I steal you for a moment, Grace?

I froze, then turned around slowly.

Standing there was Adam, but not the same old man who’d once chased someone around a cafe with a rolledup newspaper. This Adam was different. His black suit fit perfectly, his silver hair was neatly styled, and there was a calm authority about him that made people instinctively step aside. A woman lingered a few steps behind him, but my eyes didn’t leave him.

He smiled at me, that same warm, teasing smile that made me feel safe the first time we met. How do I look?he asked, tilting his head slightly.

I smiled back before I could help it. You look really good, Adam.

He chuckled softly, clearly pleased. Do I? I was hoping you’d say that.

I was about to reply when it hit me, I was still at work. I turned around quickly to apologize to Vivian and others for chatting with a guest without permission, but the sight that met me stopped me cold.

They were all staring at me like they’d all collectively forgotten how to breathe. Vivian’s hand was halfway to her mouth, and Landon looked like someone had just slapped him across the face.

I blinked. Umwhat’s wrong?

Vivian’s eyes darted between Adam and me, her voice trembling. GGracedo you know who you’re talking to?

I frowned a little, confused. A friend, ma’am.

The moment the words left my mouth, a collective gasp rippled through the hall, loud enough to make my stomach drop.

Vivian’s eyes went wide as she turned to me, looking like I just confessed to a crime. Grace, she whispered, her voice trembling, the person you’re talking to is Mr. Reed. The boss’s father.

Wait. What?

I slowly turned back to Adam, my mouth slightly open, my brain struggling to process. Iis this true….

Adam smiled softly, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He didn’t deny it. He just looked at me like he’d been waiting for this exact moment.

Oh, God.

He was Apollo Reed’s father.
