There was a time I was bitten by a dog. I was just seven years old. I remember the sharp pain tearing into my leg, the blood dripping down, the way my voice cracked as I screamed for help. I cried for anyone to come but nobody did. I had to drag myself to the hospital, shaking and terrified, my own small hands pressing against the wound to stop the bleeding.

Then there was another time, when I was fifteen. I’d been sick for days, burning with fever, barely able to stand. My parents didn’t even notice. I remember staring at the celling, waiting for someone to check on me, and realizing they wouldn’t. So I got up, dizzy and half–conscious, and dragged myself to the hospital again.

There were so many moments like that, times when I had to help myself, when I knew nobody else would. I learned that if I didn’t act, I’d end up in danger.

After those times, something changed in me. I stopped expecting anyone to come when I screamed. I stopped believing in rescue. If I was going to survive, I had to do it myself.

Even with Eleanor and Wyatt, two of the few people who ever gave me comfort, that old feeling never left. That voice in my head that whispered whenever things went wrong, no one’s coming. Save yourself.

And maybe that’s why I felt it now. That familiar, crawling instinct tightening in my gut, the same one that always came when danger was near.

Something was wrong. I was in danger.

I looked at Piper, Jackson, and Landon. Their faces told me everything.

Without thinking twice, I ran.

I bolted toward the door, but before I could reach it, Jackson’s hand clamped around my wrist and yanked me back so hard I hit the ground, my head slamming into the cold wall behind me.

“Ah!” I gasped, clutching the side of my head as the world spun. My vision blurred, and for a moment, I saw red.

Literal red.

When I touched my hand to my forehead and pulled it away there was blood.

My heart thundered in my chest, panic clawing at my throat. The room seemed to tilt and spin as my body burned up from the inside, the strange heat from earlier returning stronger, crawling through my veins like fire.

“Hahaha. Where do you think you’re going, you fucking bith?” Piper’s voice echoed above me. “You think you can just leave? After everything you’ve done to me?”

Her words didn’t even make sense. My mind was foggy, my body trembling, but I forced myself to focus. I couldn’t afford to lose control.

I blinked at her, my stomach tightening.

My mouth went dry. I pressed a hand to my chest, trying to calm the racing of my heart, but it only got worse. And the heat was spreading faster now, crawling up my neck. I pressed my thighs together, trembling. Something was wrong with me.

Jackson chuckled, low and dark. “I see the drug’s starting to work.”

I froze, the words echoing in my head.

Jackson crouched down, his grin widening. His hand reached out and caught my chin, forcing me to look at him.

“You should’ve just said yes, Grace” he whispered, his breath hot against my face. “When I asked you out. You could’ve avoided all this. But you had to play hard to get. So I had to make things a little easier. That drink you took, it wasn’t just wine. I spiked it with an aphrodisiac.”

My mind went blank for a second before everything came crashing down all at once.

“Even with that outfit and those glasses, you’re still so damn beautiful. Makes me wonder how tight you’d feel around my cock when I take you.” He said softly, like it was some kind of compliment, and reached out to touch. my hair.

I stared in disbelief; my tongue felt like lead from the drug, trapping any words. All I could do was blink, stunned.

Heat crawled up my neck. The more I listened, the more unreal it felt. I’d seen people do terrible things, but this was something else. Especially coming from Piper, a woman. She should have known better.

“Are you sure we won’t get in trouble for this?” Jackson asked, his gaze fixed on me, hungry.

Landon’s smirk sent a chill down my spine. “Relax. Nobody will believe a word she says. I’m a respectable man, and she’s just an intern. Besides, we gave her the aphrodisiac, she’ll enjoy every second. So have your fun while we record it. I might even join in once you’re done.”

Piper turned slowly, her eyes locked on mine. “Do you see now, Grace? This is what power looks like. No matter what you do, I’m always ahead. I have people backing me; you have no one. No one will save you. You’re just a disposable woman.”
