Two demons in human form

I stared at the price on my phone, my heart pounding so violently I could feel the pulse throbbing in my throat. The screen glowed back at me with big, bold numbers that made my stomach twist.
“You have got to be kidding me,” I muttered, blinking in disbelief as I rubbed my eyes with the back of my hand, as if that would magically fix the number staring at me. But when I looked again, it didn’t change.
Fifty, Million. Dollars.
Oh my God.
My mouth fell open. I sank deeper into the seat, suddenly hyperaware of the necklace around my neck. It felt heavier now, like it had doubled in weight, and it was practically scorching through my skin.
I didn’t know if the heat I felt was from the insane price or from the fact that Apollo Reed, the most terrifying and powerful man I had ever met, had casually bought something this extravagant for me. Maybe it was both. At this point, I had no idea what to think.
When Apollo placed it around my neck earlier, I was taken aback. I wanted to refuse immediately, it looked insanely expensive. Don’t get me wrong, I was touched that he had thought of me while he was in Paris, that he had gone out of his way to bring me something back. Even a small gift would have been meaningful.
But this wasn’t small. This was a piece of jewelry worth more than everything I had ever owned combined. Who was I kidding? This necklace was probably worth more than my entire neighborhood.
The moment I got into the car, curiosity got the better of me, I had to look it up. And now, staring at the result, I couldn’t help but question reality.
I lifted my hand and touched the pendant gently, as if it were a bomb that could explode.
Was it even right for me to accept something like this? Was it morally acceptable for me to wear something worth fifty million dollars?
I had never been spoiled this much before.
I leaned back further, staring out the window, trying to calm my racing mind. The necklace wasn’t the only thing messing with my head. Apollo himself was a much bigger problem.
The way he had been acting was different. Before, I told myself the reason he called me his woman, the reason he glared at anyone who dared look at me, the reason he carried me in front of everyone, was simple, he wanted me physically. He was a powerful man, used to taking whatever he desired, so it made sense.
At least that explanation didn’t scare me. But the truth was slowly settling in the more I thought about it. Apollo Reed was not the type of man who needed to act possessive, protective, gentle, or attentive just for sex. If he wanted me, all he had to do was say a single word, and I would obey. He didn’t need to cook for me, wash me, carry me like I was fragile. Yet he did all of it anyway.

It was starting to feel like his words were more than lust. Like he really meant them. What we had was becoming more than just a sexual relationship.
Which left me with the biggest question of all,
What exactly were we?

He said I was his woman. Did that mean I was his girlfriend? Was that even a thing to him? Did someone like Apollo Reed believe in label? And did I even want put a label on our relationship?
I closed my eyes and pressed my fingers to my temple as a headache began pulsing there. The more I thought about it, the more confused I felt.
“Miss Grace, are you okay?”
I blinked my eyes open and looked at the rear–view mirror. Austin was watching me through it, his brows drawn together in concern.
“Do you have a headache? Should I take you to the hospital?”
“Oh–no,” I said quickly, shaking my head. “I’m fine, really. I was just thinking, that’s all. Sorry for making you worry.”
Austin smiled and shook his head. “Don’t apologize, Miss Grace. You went through a lot yesterday. It’s understandable you’re tired. I’ll get you home soon.”
I returned his smile and nodded.
I’d wanted to go home by myself earlier, but Austin insisted, actually, more like gently threatened, that Apollo would fire him if he let me take a cab. I didn’t want anyone stressing because of me, and honestly, my body still felt sore and heavy, so I’d agreed.
The car ride was quiet. Austin didn’t try to talk, glance at me unnecessarily, or act strange, even though he knew what had happened between me and Apollo in the car.
He was extremely considerate.
Just then, his phone rang.
He glanced at the screen, hesitating for a moment, as if deciding whether to answer in front of me. Then he said, Excuse me,” and picked up.
The voice on the other side must have been delivering bad news, because with each passing second Austin’s expression hardened, his posture stiffened, mouth pressing into a thin line. His eyes flicked toward the mirror once, then away, as if he didn’t want to worry me.
When the call finally ended, Austin sighed heavily and put his phone down.
He stared at the road for a moment, then slowly lifted his gaze to the rear–view mirror again.
I blinked, confused by the serious look on his face.
“Miss Grace?” he said quietly. “May I ask you a question?”
I sat up straighter, a sudden unease crawling up my spine. “Of course.”
“Do you know people called Eleanor and Wyatt?”
My entire body went still.
A cold, sharp dread washed over me so fast I almost felt dizzy. My fingers tightened around the seatbelt, my throat drying instantly.
Eleanor and Wyatt?

I leaned forward so fast I almost hit the back of Austin’s seat.
“Yes!” I blurted, my voice higher than normal. “They’re my family, what happened to them?”
Austin wouldn’t ask about Eleanor and Wyatt unless something serious had happened. My mind raced, flashing through every worst possibility.
I tried to reach for my phone out of instinct, only to remember I didn’t have it. I must’ve dropped it somewhere at the event last night while everything was happening. I didn’t even realize it was gone until this moment.
“Are they okay?”
Austin nodded immediately. “Yes, they’re safe.”
I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding, my entire body slumping back into the seat. A wave of relief washed over me so hard my eyes stung.
I couldn’t lose them. I truly didn’t know what I would do if I did.
I swallowed and looked back up at the mirror. “So what happened? Why were you asking?”
Austin hesitated before answering, as if choosing the least alarming way to deliver news.
“You see… I just got a call from the prison,” he said slowly. “They informed me that a man and a woman named Eleanor and Wyatt were arrested because they were making a scene outside the facility. They were trying to force their way in to see the people who were involved in what happened to you yesterday.‘
My eyes widened, and my mouth dropped open.
Austin continued, “From what I heard, the woman even struck an officer who tried to remove her from the entrance. The man didn’t lay a finger on anyone, he just stood behind her like a guard. And he looked so intimidating that most of the officers didn’t even want to get close.”
I closed my eyes, covering my face with both hands.
Oh God.
That sounded exactly like them.
I had completely forgotten what type of feral wild animals my friends were. If they knew even a fraction of what happened to me last night, of course they would show up at the prison like two demons in human form. And of course Eleanor would punch someone. And of course Wyatt wouldn’t stop her.
If they were truly there, then no one at that prison was safe.
