I have a score to settle

I reached out and gently touched the corners of Eleanor’s eyes. She immediately whined like a child.
“Ow–Grace, don’t touch it,” she muttered, but she leaned toward me anyway.
“You shouldn’t have cried,” I said, giving her the look I always gave when she did something reckless. “You know your eyes are sensitive.”
Eleanor pouted instantly, pressing her fingertips under her eyes. “I couldn’t help it. It just kept coming and coming.”
A laugh slipped out of me before I could stop it. I tried to hide it, but it was impossible. Seeing her like this, after she had cried buckets in my arms earlier, until her entire body trembling finally calmed, touched something in
I looked at the both of them.
Wyatt sat on her other side, completely focused on holding a tiny battery fan up to her face, trying to soothe the irritation around her eyes. His expression was filled with that hopeless affection he always reserved for her.
“Don’t worry,” he said gently, angling the fan so the breeze hit her evenly. “Your eyes will go back to normal. You just need to go home and rest.”
Eleanor nodded, but then suddenly froze, her expression shifting as if someone had whispered a war command into her brain.
“No!” she said sharply.
I raised an eyebrow. “No?”
“This is not the time to rest.” She clenched her fists dramatically. “It’s the time to ruin those bastards who touched you yesterday. I have a score to settle. I won’t rest until I kill them.”
Wyatt lowered the fan a little and nodded, as if fully agreeing with her. “You’re right. We have to settle that.”
“Not you too, Wyatt.” I sighed, looking between the two of them. “How do you even know what happened yesterday?”
Both of them exchanged a look, beforeWyatt cleared his throat. “When you didn’t come home last night, we got worried. At first, we thought maybe you got too busy with the event. But when you still weren’t home this morning, we got more worried. Eleanor was two seconds away from calling the police.”
Eleanor nodded vigorously.
“But,” Wyatt continued, “the news came on before she finished dialing. They said a woman almost got assaulted at the event.”
“The camera caught a picture of your boss carrying you out,” Eleanor cut in, pointing at me. “Even though your face was blurred, we recognized the dress.”
My picture was taken, but my face was blurred. I didn’t even have to think twice about who made that possible.

There was only one person with enough power to keep me hidden, even when there were a dozen ways the media could have exposed me.
Apollo Reed.
Eleanor reached out, squeezing my hand tightly.
“We were worried sick. But we knew you were with your boss, and you looked safe. I was thankful for that.” Her eyes darkened. “But I wasn’t about to let the people who hurt you get away with it. So we came here. But these people won’t let me see even one of them.”
I raised my eyebrow. “You didn’t assault any of them, right?”
Eleanor scoffed, flipping her hair dramatically. “Assault? Did they say I assaulted them? Are they even cops? Why are they being babies about it? I just slapped one of them lightly.” She lifted her palm for emphasis. “He tried to stop me from entering.”
I covered my face with one hand.
Wyatt patted her shoulder. “It wasn’t lightly.”
“It was lightly for me,” Eleanor countered back.
I exhaled through my nose, already feeling the headache coming.

Eleanor crossed her arms and glared at the closed door like she was trying to burn a hole through it. “Anyway,‘ she huffed, jaw clenched, “I’m not leaving this place until they let me see at least one of them. I don’t care what they say.”
Since we were young, they had always been like this.
