Always stepping in front of me. Always defending me. Always ready to fight the world for me, even if it got them in trouble. Especially Eleanor. She threw herself into fights, without a second thought.
I lifted my hand and placed it on her head, ruffling her hair gently. “Calm down. You’re like a wild cat. You always get yourself in trouble.”
She put her hand over mine, brows furrowing as if she wanted to argue but couldn’t. “You’re no different,” she muttered.
I smiled before saying, “Eleanor, Wyatt, I appreciate it, but you don’t have to confront them.”
Eleanor’s mouth opened immediately to object, but I shook my head before she could get a word out.
“It’s not because I don’t want you to,” I said, “but because I want to do it myself.”
Both of them froze.
“What?” they said in unison.
Their faces showed it all. They were taken aback. And I understood why. The old me wouldn’t have said anything like that. The old me would’ve avoided the confrontation, and waited for time to blur the pain.
But this time, I wasn’t that person anymore.

I promised myself I wouldn’t let people do things to me and walk away without consequences,
When I woke up this morning, I’d already decided that when I was ready, I would ask Apollo if I could see them and confront them myself. But everything is moving faster than I thought, and there’s no point in waiting, So asked Austin in the car instead. If I want to move past what happened, I have to face them. If I don’t, I’ll carry this weight forever,
Eleanor stared at me for a long moment, and something in her eyes softened. She always understood me better than anyone else. She was my other half after all.
Finally, she smiled. “Fine, we’ll wait for you. But if you can’t handle being near those people, come to us. We’ll finish it for you.”
Wyatt nodded firmly beside her, already cracking his knuckles as if preparing for war.
A knock sounded at the door.
Austin stepped inside, calm as always. “Miss Grace,” he said, “they’re already there. Are you ready?”
I looked at my friends. They didn’t speak, just looked at me with that unwavering support that had carried me through half my life.
“I’m ready,” I turned to Austin and nodded. “Let’s go.”

I clenched my hands on the metal table so hard my nails dug into my palms. My heart pounded so violently it felt like it was trying to crawl out of my chest. I bit my lips, trying to force the images out of my head. But it didn’t matter how many times I tried not to think about it.
Last night replayed again and again, like a nightmare I couldn’t wake from.
Apollo Reed, The Apollo Reed, the most powerful man in the entire damn country, had carried that stupid nobody out of the restroom like she was some precious jewel he needed to protect.
That scene wouldn’t leave my mind. The way he held her. The way his expression had actually changed for her. The way he’d looked at her like she was the most important person in his entire life.
My jaw tightened and I bit down harder on my lip until the metallic taste of blood hit my tongue.
That bitch.
How could Apollo Reed care about her?
She was a nobody. An invisible, trembling, plain little nerd who didn’t even know how to lift her face when talking to people. She was supposed to be in my shadow, not standing under his spotlight.
When I first saw her at the company, something in me hated her instantly. First, River, the hottest intern in the entire building, was paying attention to her. And second, because the richest, most terrifying man in the country suddenly wanted her working directly under him.
Why? Why her? Why did she get everything? Why must she be the main character?
“Ah!” A strangled sound ripped out of me. I slammed my fist onto the table. “This isn’t fair! It’s making me go crazy!”
Landon, sitting beside me, flinched violently. He didn’t even look at me, his entire body was shaking so badly the table rattled. His hand kept yanking at his hair, his breath uneven, almost wheezing.
He looked awful. Bruises covered his face, and his arm was wrapped in a stiff cast. And even though Apollo had been a monster last night, none of this was his doing. He’d focused on Jackson. These injuries came from that other psychopath, River.
When Apollo carried that girl out, River arrived seconds later. I’d never seen him that angry before. River was always quiet, and dismissive of everyone around him except Grace. He never raised his voice, never showed emotion, never even glanced twice at anybody. But last night, he was a monster.
He beat the already unconscious Jackson again and again until Mr. Reed, Apollo’s father, had to stop him. And when River turned to Landon, he pounced like an animal. Punch after punch, until Landon screamed and passed
out.
His face looked barely human by the time they dragged River off him. If River had touched me the way he touched them, I would be in the hospital next to Jackson.
Now we were stuck here, in this disgusting holding cell, waiting for our trials. And the worst part, the part that

made something collapse inside me, was what I learned last night,
River was also a Reed. He was Apollo Reed’s nephew.
They were both Reeds. And they both cared about that stupid, pathetic, ridiculous girl, Grace had both the uncle and the nephew wrapped around her little finger.
For fuck’s sake, how was that even possible?
Why were two powerful men interested in her?
I sighed and shook my head. This wasn’t what I should be thinking about. I shouldn’t be obsessing over that stupid girl. I needed to focus on myself and on how the hell I was supposed to get out of this mess. Because unlike Grace, I didn’t have a walking empire ready to kneel at my feet. I didn’t have powerful men hovering around me like guard dogs.
The only influential person I truly knew was Katherine Jones, the daughter of the Jones family, the second richest family after the Reeds. Katherine and I had been friends since high school, but it was never equal. I did all her dirty work, everything she didn’t want to touch. But I didn’t mind. She was rich, powerful, spoiled, and adored. Having her close meant having access to the kind of power people feared.
She could help me if she wanted. Her brothers could pull strings in the court, maybe even reduce my sentence.
Even if Apollo Reed wanted my head on a platter, the Jones name still carried weight. It wasn’t as strong as the Reeds, but it was still strong enough to twist the system in her favor. But there was a problem.
Katherine didn’t help people unless they were useful to her. And lately, I hadn’t been useful.
Unless-
A slow smile crept onto my lips.
Katherine had always liked Apollo. No, obsessed was a better word. She was obsessed with him to an insane degree. That was literally the reason I even started working at Reed Corporation. Katherine wanted me to spy on Apollo, and keep tabs on any woman who tried to get close to him.
I never told her about Grace because I didn’t consider Grace a threat. She looked like a background character, someone easily ignored. But I was wrong.
If Katherine heard about the new girl that Apollo was suddenly interested in? Grace would’ve been erased without effort.
I smirked, leaning back in my seat, feeling that warm, smug confidence slide back into me. So what if the Reeds were suddenly obsessed with Grace? I had someone who could crush her completely.
I turned to look at Landon. He was still shaking beside me.
“Stop being dramatic, Landon,” I said, rolling my eyes. “Relax. I’ve figured out how we’re getting out of this.”
He froze and stared at me like I’d grown a second head. “What the hell are you talking about?” he demanded, voice cracking.
“You heard me,” I said, flipping my hair back. “Once I talk to-

“Stop talking nonsense!” His hands trembled violently as he pointed at me. “Do you even understand the situation we’re in, you stupid bitch?”

He was breathing hard, almost hyperventilating. “You think this is some kind of show? That just talking to someone will fix everything? Do you even know whose woman we offended? Our lives are over. Completely over. No matter what stupid plan that brain of yours comes up with, it’s over for the three of us! Apollo Reed, that monster, won’t let us walk away from this.”
