Grace

Piper flicked her hair back, a slow smile curling on her lips. She met my gaze with confidence. You know what? I’ve always wondered what the boss sees in you. He’s rich, handsome, olderbasically every woman’s dream. Women would kill to have him. So why would someone like him want a stupid nerd like you?

She scanned my face, her expression twisting into jealousy. But now that I’m seeing you up close, I get it. Who would’ve known you were this beautiful?

((

….

You’re a strange woman, Grace. Why hide your pretty face and dress like some nerd with a fake wig and glasses? Was it a tactic? A trap? A way to win him over? Her voice sharpened. So you’re not just a whore, you’re a manipulative bitch too.

Her words bounced off the walls, each syllable dripping with venom. Landon’s face drained of color with every second. He whipped his head toward her, panicking.

Piper, are you crazy?! Shut the fuck up! Do you want to get us killed?

She scoffed loudly. Get us killed? You’re mistaken, Landon. You might die, but I won’t.She leaned back in her chair like she was invincible. Nothing is going to happen to me. That’s why Apollo and River didn’t hit me. They might be interested in you,she said, eyes flicking to me with disgust, but they also like me. They won’t let anything happen to me. I’ll get out of here soon. And honestly? I’m not scared of anyone. Especially someone like you.

I just stared at her.

I hadn’t said a single word since entering this room. Piper was even more delusional than I imagined. But I didn’t come here for her insults or her fantasies.

I came here for one thing.

I looked directly at her, my voice calm and steady. Why?

Piper blinked, tilted her head, then burst out laughing. Why?She kept laughing until tears almost formed at the corners of her eyes. What is why? Don’t tell me you’re asking why I did what I did in the restroom.

She leaned forward. Are you stupid? Isn’t it obvious? I did it because you’re a bitch, and I hate your guts. You’re inferior to me,she hissed. I don’t understand why you get all the attention. I don’t understand why people are suddenly starting to like you. Or why you think you’re the main character when you’re just a stupid background

extra.

And why the hell are the boss and River interested in you?! Why do they protect you?! Why do they look at you like you actually matter?!

She slammed her fist on the table so hard the metal rattled. You’re no one, Grace! Absolutely no one! How dare you act like you’re somebody? I wanted to put you in your place. So next time you try to pretend you’re worth anything, you’ll remember who you are.

Her chest was heaving, her breaths sharp and uneven. She had finally let everything out.

You’re stuck here with me

I just looked at her.

So that was it.

She did all of that, told those men, cornered me, let them try to assault me, because she was jealous. Jealous that people were starting to treat me like a human being. Jealous that Apollo and River helped me. Jealous that I simply existed and didn’t orbit around her ego.

My gaze darkened.

Why did people always target me? I never did anything to them. I never asked for their attention. I only ever wanted to live my life peacefully, but every time, someone like her came along trying to rip everything apart. As if I didn’t have the right to be confident. As if I didn’t have the right to breathe unless someone else allowed it.

Even if I had Apollo’s attention, nothing justified what she did.

Heat crawled under my skin, the kind that came when my anger grew past the point of speaking. When I got really angry, I never shouted or hit things. I became someone else entirely. Someone who didn’t recognize the gentle version of me that existed before.

And I felt that version taking over now.

Piper chuckled suddenly, leaning back with a satisfied smirk. Wellat the end of the day, nothing happened, right?she said lightly. You should’ve been more careful, Grace. Maybe wear something that actually covers your body next time so men won’t lust after you.

She said it on purpose to provoke me. And it worked, because something inside me snapped.

Fine.

If people kept treating me like this because I was calm and nice, then I had no reason to be nice anymore.

I lifted my eyes to her slowly, my voice low and hoarse.

Austin,I said without turning around, can I ask a favor?”

Austin didn’t hesitate. “Yes, Miss Grace.

Can I have a minute with her? Please take Landon away and leave us for a moment. My voice was calm, and it made Piper’s smug expression twitch immediately.

Her eyebrows shot up, and she stared at me like I’d said something insane. Wwhat are you talking about?she demanded, but before she could say more, Austin stepped forward.

Yes, Miss Grace.

Piper snapped her head toward him in disbelief, but he wasn’t interested in her reaction. He simply gave a nod to the nearest officer, who approached Landon without hesitation.

The officer removed Landon’s cuffs first. Landon stared, confused and trembling, but he didn’t dare resist.

Can you remove hers too?I added. The officer blinked at me as though I’d asked him to unlock a wild animal, but when he saw Austin’s expression, he obeyed.

You’re sturs here with me

The cuffs came off Piper’s wrists, and she rubbed her hands slowly.

The officer dragged Landon toward the door, and he panicked immediately, tripping over his own words as he tried to plead. Miss Grace! Please, I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to! Please forgive me!” The door closed behind him, cutting off his babbling.

Austin turned to me, his voice low. Please be careful, Miss Grace, before he stepped out as well.

And just like that, the room fell silent, leaving only Piper and me.

Piper sat up straighter, trying to regain whatever confidence she thought she had. So,she said, crossing her arms and lifting her chin, what do you think you’re planning to do? You really want to be stuck in here with me?

I didn’t answer her. Instead, I stood without hurry and walked around the table until I stood directly in front of her, looking down at her like she was nothing more than a stubborn stain refusing to go away.

I think you’re mistaken about something, Piper, I’m not stuck here with you.I leaned down until I was inches from her ear. You’re stuck here with me.

She didn’t even finish inhaling before I grabbed a fistful of her hair and yanked her head back hard enough to make her gasp.

Ah!Her cry echoed sharply in the room. She tried to reach up, but I didn’t give her time. I kicked the chair out from under her, and her body hit the floor with a heavy thud that made her breath choke in her throat. She looked up at me, eyes wide, finally understanding that something was very wrong, and that she had underestimated me in every possible way.

I tilted my head as I crouched down, still gripping her hair tightly. You want to know why Apollo and River didn’t lay a hand on you?I asked. It’s not because they couldn’t hit you, it’s because they don’t hit women. But I do.

I didn’t let her process it. I yanked her head back even harder and slapped her across the face with a force that echoed through the walls.

Piper froze, her cheek instantly reddening. All her smugness, all her delusions, all her arrogance vanished in a second as she stared at me, stunned and terrified.

For the first time, she realized I wasn’t the girl she thought she could step on.

And this was just the beginning of her nightmare.
