A cold–blooded demon with nothing to lose
Grace
The whole room went silent for a moment before someone gasped. “Oh my God. So it’s true. The boss really was with a woman.”
They sat in disbelief, as if unable to process what they had just heard.
The man who had started it all smiled. “I didn’t want to say anything because I might get in trouble, but I don’t care anymore. My chest is hurting from keeping it in.”
A woman tilted her head, brows furrowed. “Wait… so the rumors about Mr. Apollo being interested in men weren’t true? I mean, I’ve never seen him with any woman other than his late wife. I thought maybe, after she passed away, he changed his preference.”
“Gay?” Another woman cut in. “I never believed that rumor. Please, I know a gay man when I see one, and Mr. Apollo is definitely not gay. Maybe he just doesn’t like showing who he’s seeing. Or maybe…” she leaned closer to her friend, whispering, “she was just a one–night thing. You never know.”
“Either way,” another woman sighed, “I’m so jealous. I’d kill to spend even one night with a man like him. She is so damn lucky.”
“I wonder who she is. Is she beautiful?”
The man nodded, leaning back with a satisfied smirk. “She is stunning. How should I put this, she had the kind of beauty that makes men want to protect, and love her. Forget her being lucky, I think he was the lucky one. I only saw part of her face, but I swear if she worked here, she’d be so popular.”
Their voices swarmed around me, pressing in against my ears. I gripped the cup in my hand tightly. My throat burned with each swallow I forced down.
Out of every humiliating, and uncomfortable situation I had ever been in, this right here, was the
absolute worst.
They were talking about the woman with Apollo, completely unaware she was sitting right in front of them.
I didn’t even know how to react.
I considered grabbing the nearest drink and drowning it in one gulp. I needed something to make the pounding in my head stop, but I knew better. I’d only be piling problems on top of problems if I let myself go there.
Still, I had no idea how long I could stay calm for.
“Grace?”
River’s voice cut through the haze. I looked up at him. “Huh?”
He was studying me, one eyebrow slightly raised, as he leaned closer and I instinctively leaned back.
“What are you doing?” I whispered.

“It’s strange.
My stomach dropped. “W–what is?”
His eyes narrowed. “Your face is red, and you’re barely breathing. It’s like-”
My breath hitched before he even finished.
Did he… piece it together? Did he know?
For a split second, I thought I was dead. But, then River calmly reached out, plucked the cup from my hand, and lifted it to eye level. He tilted it, swirled it, his gaze flat.
“Did they put alcohol in it?” he asked.
My heart slammed against my ribs so hard I thought it would burst, and I almost sighed in relief.
I shook my head quickly. “N–no, it’s just a bit uncomfortable, especially their conversation. Are they even allowed to say stuff like that? Isn’t that his privacy?”
River studied me for a moment, then placed the drink back on the table. “They’re already drunk. I doubt they even know what they’re saying. Sober people would think twice before speaking that way about the boss.” His eyes flicked toward the others. “And besides, none of the managers seem to care.”
I followed his gaze. Mr. Aiden was already out cold, his head slumped on the table, snoring. Honestly, I had been wondering how long he would last, he’d been downing alcohol like water from the start. Sarah, on the other hand, didn’t even seem to notice the commotion. She sat a few chairs away, sipping her drink slowly, her mind clearly elsewhere.
“Yeah… it seems like that,” I murmured, running a hand through my hair before letting it fall back to my lap. My eyes drifted down to the drink in front of me.
“It just doesn’t seem fair,” I whispered, almost to myself.
My fingers tapped lightly against the glass. They were talking about his relationship, prying into his life, and none of them saw the problem with it.
If people intruded on my privacy. I don’t think I’d like it.
I thought of Charles, of the whispers that followed me everywhere, how people treated my pain like cheap entertainment.
I wouldn’t wish that on anyone, not even the untouchable Apollo Reed. Because beneath all his power and detachment, he was still human.
I felt River’s gaze on me, and it made me shift slightly in my seat. He didn’t say anything at first, then, as if reading my thoughts, he finally spoke. “His life is a rather interesting one. That’s why people talk about him.”
I turned to him, raising an eyebrow. “Interesting?”
A faint smile played on his lips. “Mr. Apollo might look boring on the surface, since he hardly does anything except work. But he’s a very interesting man. Do you know how people describe him?”

I paused, waiting.
“A cold–blooded demon with nothing to lose, because he already lost the most important person to
him.”
He didn’t need to say her name. Everyone knew.
Elodie. Apollo’s late wife. The woman who died in that accident ten years ago.
“After she died, he never showed interest in anyone else. So if he’s finally interested in someone now… everyone will want to know who the woman is.”
