Please Me Daddy (Gracie) novel Chapter 93

Do you have a boyfriend, Miss Grace?

Grace

The first time Eleanor ever dug up something about my boss, she’d shoved her phone in my face. On the screen was a picture of a younger version of the man I’d almost had a onenight stand with, standing beside a breathtakingly beautiful woman.

At first, I panicked, thinking I’d been sexual with a married man. But then I found out the woman was his late wife, and first love.

Elodie Reed.

When I read the article attached, it felt like I was reading a fairytale. They had been high school sweethearts. She was a transfer student, and a scholarship kid at a school for the wealthy. She was stunning, the kind of girl who made people stare, every boy in school tripping over himself to win her attention. Every boy, except Apollo, the hottest guy in school.

Of course, that didn’t stop the girls from despising her. They bullied her relentlessly, terrified she’d catch the eye of Apollo.

In the article I read, Apollo and Elodie had met by accident. She’d mistaken a group of suited men trying to drag Apollo away for thugs, so she grabbed his hand and ran. But it hadn’t been thugs, it was his father’s men, trying to take him home. The image of it played in my head like a movie scene.

Years later, they married. And in every picture I found of them on the internet, Apollo was smiling, something I had never once seen him do in person. People said he adored her, that his love for her was obvious to anyone who looked.

But tragedy struck. No one knew exactly what happened. There had been an accident, and when the police arrived, Apollo had been seen running toward the wreck, desperately trying to save her. But the car exploded before he could reach her.

After that, he locked himself away for two years. No one saw him until the day he finally walked into the company and took over everything.

Thinking back on it now, could that be why he never drove? Why he always insisted on being in the passenger seat? I’d thought it strange before, but maybe that was the reason.

What really happened that day?

Hey.

A hand rested gently on my shoulder. I blinked, snapping back to the present, and turned. River’s gaze was on me, a small smile tugging at his lips.

If you’re worried about how this will affect you,he said, voice low so only I could hear, don’t. Nothing will happen to you, since you’re not involved with him.

My throat went dry. I licked my lips, forcing myself to nod. Right

I lifted my glass and took another sip.

How should I tell him I was more involved with Apollo than he could ever imagine?

An hour later, we finally decided to call it a night. Or rather, Sarah decided it for us. Mr. Aiden had suddenly jolted awake, demanding more drinks, his checks flushed red, his tie hanging loose around his neck. But Sarah cut him off, saying she had too much work to do in the morning.

That was the end of it.

Everyone started gathering their things, laughing, still a little tipsy as they pushed their chairs back. I didn’t even wait. I packed my bag in record time. The thought of sitting there for even five more minutes made my chest tighten.

Outside, the night air brushed strands of my hair back from my face. I exhaled in relief.

Leaning against the wall of the restaurant, I watched my colleagues walking out, hailing taxis, clutching onto each other for balance. Their laughter filled the street. I couldn’t help smiling at the sight.

Even if today had been nervewracking, even if I’d been terrified half the time, it was still exciting. This was what I wanted, wasn’t it? A normal life, working with good people, laughing, and going out for dinner after work like everyone else.

I still want to drink! We have a long night ahead of us!!

I looked up just in time to see Mr. Aiden being dragged out by two colleagues, his arm flailing wildly.

Sir, it’s late. We have work tomorrow. Let’s go home, one of them said. But he only shrugged like a stubborn child who didn’t care. When his eyes found me, and his face lit up.

Grace!he shouted, his grin stretching ear to ear. Come, I wanted to talk to you!

My heart skipped. Everyone turned to look.

Yes, sir?I asked carefully, stepping closer, though I already regretted it.

He leaned forward, swaying a little, eyes glinting mischievously. Do you have a boyfriend?

Wwhat?

He laughed. I have a nephew. He’s a handsome boy, with a good job. He’ll take care of you. You’d make a good couple. I want to find him a good woman.

I blinked, my mouth opening and closing without words. What was I supposed to say to that?

The men holding him groaned in unison. Stop bothering the girl. Let’s get you home.

They tugged him away toward a waiting taxi. He stumbled into the backseat still calling my name, and promising introductions I had no intention of accepting.

I let out a quiet laugh, and shook my head.

I was just about to flag down a taxi when a deep voice cut through the night air behind me.
