Pursuing My Rejected Luna novel Skye Chapter 146

Chapter 146

Nicolai

Every time I look at Skye, I’m struck again with awe at how completely she’s changed my world.

I’ve stared death in the face and walked away smiling. I’ve brought powerful Alphas to their knees and laughed as. they begged for their life. My days were filled with decisions that ended careers, ended businesses, ended-on a small number of occasions-considerably more than that.

I am not, generally, a man who struggles with other people occupying space near me. 1 note their presence, calculate how much of a problem they’re likely to be, and decide how to handle it. Then I move on with my day

Jaxon Vale has been in my house for nine days, and I am discovering that this requires considerably more of me than I anticipated.

Take this morning for example. I’m up early, so Skye doesn’t have to be-Benji had a difficult night, the kind that wears down even her considerable resilience, and I let her sleep through the morning feeding because Rena has formula prepared and I’m capable of holding a bottle.

Dimitri isn’t down yet. Which is unfortunate, because he is usually the buffer between me and any need to have more than a passing conversation with Jaxon. Not so today.

Jaxon is in the kitchen when I arrive, already moving around the room with ease, making coffee like he’s always been here. Like this is his home and he’s completely familiar with it.

He’s been here nine days. He’s learned the kitchen. I note this. I file it away.

We end up on opposite sides of the island, both of us with coffee, the morning quiet around us.

“If you hurt her-” He starts in his growly Alpha tone.

No preamble. No warming into it. I let him finish the sentence in his own time, though it appears that was the

whole sentence.

“I won’t,” I say. “But if I did, you’d have every right to come for me.”

He looks at his coffee for a moment. “I hate that it’s you,” he says.

I wait, fairly certain he has more to say this time.

“But I’m glad it’s someone who sees her worth.” He finishes.

He doesn’t look up when he says the second half. Says it to his coffee, to the counter, to anything other than my face. I accept this with a nod.

Neither of us needs to make it more than what it is. Two men who are going to share a life around the same child, establishing the basic terms of coexistence without unnecessary elaboration.

“Benji’s been better since you’ve been here,” I admit. Not a peace offering exactly. Just true. “More settled.”

I manage this the way I manage most things that don’t have an immediate solution. I remind myself what she chose. What she keeps choosing. Every day, in small ways and large ones, she chooses this house, this bed, this life with me in it.

That’s not nothing.

It’s not even close to nothing.
