Chapter 26
Jaxon
The moment Grandma leaves the room, I feel like I can breathe again.
Having her here-watching, judging, forcing me into that humiliating apology-was suffocating. I’m the Alpha of this pack. I don’t answer to anyone. But Grandma has a way of making me feel like I’m ten years old again, caught doing something I shouldn’t.
Skye is already moving toward the door, clearly trying to escape.
“Grandma wants to stay with us for a while,” I tell her.
She pauses, her hand on the doorframe. Doesn’t turn around. “I’ll prepare a room for her.”
That’s it? No argument, no discussion, just immediate compliance with something she has to know I
don’t want?
I cross the distance between us in three strides and grab her wrist. Not hard enough to hurt, but firm enough to stop her from walking away.
“I already apologized!” The words come out harsher than I intended. “What more do you want?!”
She looks down at my hand on her wrist, then up at my face. Her expression is completely neutral. Blank.
“I don’t want anything,” she says.
“Then why are you acting like this?”
“Like what?”
“Like” I gesture helplessly with my free hand. “Like you’re just going through the motions. Like nothing I say matters.”
“You apologized. I accepted. What else is there?”
The calm in her voice is infuriating. Where’s the hurt? The anger? The tears I was bracing myself for? She’s just… empty. And somehow that’s worse than any scene she could have made.
I release her wrist, running my hand through my hair. “Grandma doesn’t need to stay. I can talk to her, explain that everything’s fine now-”
“I’ll prepare a room for her,” Skye repeats.
“I don’t want her here.” The admission comes out before I can stop it. “She makes me feel like I’m being
monitored. Like I can’t run my own pack, my own house, without her approval.”
“Then I’ll talk to her,” Skye says simply. “Explain that we appreciate her concern but we have everything
under control.”

“You’d do that?”
“If that’s what you want.”
There it is again. That maddening compliance. Like she’s a servant taking orders instead of my mate expressing her own opinion.
Something hot and ugly twists in my chest. “You’re upset because I won’t help your stepbrother. Is that it?”
She looks up at me, surprise flickering across her face. “What?”
“Diana. She came here asking for help with Dalton’s situation, and I said no. Now you’re punishing me for it by being cold and agreeable, making me look like the bad guy.”
“I’m not-”
