Pursuing My Rejected Luna novel Skye Chapter 276

Ch. 46

Cassandra

It’s Saturday morning, I finally have a day off, and I have absolutely no idea what to do with myself. Usually, I volunteer to help Mara in the kitchen, even if I’m not assigned. But today, she’s insisting I take some time to relax. As if I know the meaning of

the word.

Liam is off playing with Theo and some other boys, so I take my time getting ready for the day. That doesn’t take nearly as long as I hope it will, so I settle in the one chair in our little room, determined to finally read the book one of the girls from the kitchen lent me. She’d handed it over with a mischievous smile and said “trust me, you’ll love it!”

I do not love it.

I’m not even through the first chapter and the female lead has already had three demons shove their dicks in her pussy, her ass, and down her throat. But is she satisfied? Of course not. She’s pouting because demon number four, the one she really wanted,

refuses to join.

Maybe demon smut is just not my thing, or maybe it reminds me a bit too much of who I used to be. Either way, I toss the book aside and look around the room for something else to do. Five minutes later, I’m on my way to the kitchen, prepared to beg

Mara to put me to work.

“I thought I told you to take the day off,” She scolds me without looking up from her current task, chopping vegetables.

“Please, Mara,” I whine shamelessly. “I’m bored!”

“A little boredom never hurt anybody. It might actually be good for you.” She sets a knife and cutting board in front of me and passes over an onion anyway.

I get into a rhythm and we work in companionable silence for a while. I’m just starting to think this day might be salvageable after all, when Mara decides to indulge in some idle chatter.

“Piper stayed over last night. I saw the Alpha walking her out as I was coming into work.”

She says it while she’s checking the pantry inventory. Not looking at me, not aiming it at me. Just gossip. Four words dropped into the air like they weigh nothing.

But my heart drops into my stomach with the weight of a stone.

“Oh,” My voice is flat, uninterested.

At least I hope that’s the way it sounds to her and the mind-numbing ache spreading through my limbs isn;t actually obvious in my tone. But I don’t trust myself to open my mouth again without a whine slipping out so I don’t comment any further. I focus on finishing the job Mara gave me instead.

“You know, I think I will try some of that relaxation you think I need.” I keep my tone light, sniffing my hands and wrinkling my nose dramatically. “Now that I stink like onions, a hot shower or a nice long bath sounds heavenly.”

“Now you’re talking.” Mara waves me off, oblivious to my heartache.

I make my way back to my room, trying not to let the soul-crushing pain consume me. It isn’t lost on me that I’m getting exactly what I deserve. If the pain I caused Noah was even a fraction of what I’m feeling right now, no pain I suffer will ever be enough to make up for it.

But pain isn’t the only emotion I feel. Anger is a close second and I latch onto it like a lifeline. Because I’m unreasonably pissed that Noah didn’t tell me himself.

Not that I expected him to, he doesn’t owe me that. Still, my wolf is convinced he should have been man enough to tell me to my face that he was choosing her. And if anger helps me avoid the heartbreak that wants to swallow me whole…

Then I’ll hold onto that.

The rest of the weekend passes by in a haze. Thankfully Liam spends most of it outside with his friends. But when he comes in for dinner, I do my best to engage. And somehow, I make it to Monday morning.

Losing myself in work is familiar. I can do this. I file the stack of docurnents left on my desk. Add them all to my tracking ledger. The work takes focus and I give it happily.
