Chapter 32
Skye
Three years ago. Wedding night.
I stand in our bedroom-our bedroom, though it doesn’t feel like ours-wearing the white silk nightgown my aunt Diana gave me as a wedding gift.
Jaxon emerges from the bathroom already changed, wearing only sleep pants. He’s beautiful. I’ve always thought so. Strong and commanding, with those steel-gray eyes that used to make my heart race.
Now they just make me nervous.
“Come here,” he says.
It’s not an invitation. It’s a command.
I cross to the bed. He pulls me down, positions me beneath him, and I try to tell myself this will be different. That now we’re married, now it’s official, maybe he’ll be different.
But he keeps his eyes closed. Touches me as little as possible. Moves inside me like he’s completing a task, with no concern for my pleasure. Nothing but doing his husbandly duty as the pack expects.
When it’s over, he gets up immediately. He doesn’t hold me. He doesn’t even look at me.
I reach for him as he stands. “Jaxon-”
“We should sleep.” His voice is flat. “Tomorrow’s a long day.”
He gets into bed, turns his back to me, and within minutes his breathing evens out.
I lie beside him in the dark, one hand pressed to my mouth to muffle the sound of my crying.
He pretends not to notice.
Two and a half years ago.
We’ve been working together all day on the new medical clinic project. Planning, budgeting, meeting with contractors. For the first time since we married, we’re functioning as a team.
Jaxon even smiled at something I said. A real smile, not the tight polite one he uses in public.
That night, I initiate sex for the first time. Something I’d never been brave enough to do before, fearing his rejection.
He seems surprised but doesn’t refuse. And for a few minutes, it almost feels intimate. Like we’re connecting. Like maybe this could work.
“I love you,” I whisper against his skin.
He goes completely still.

Then he pulls out, climbs off me, starts getting dressed.
“Don’t confuse the mate bond with real feelings, Skye.” His voice is cold, distant. “This is just biology. Chemistry. It doesn’t mean anything.”
*Jaxon-”
“I’m sleeping in my office tonight.”
He leaves. The door clicks shut with devastating finality.
I don’t tell him I love him again.
Two years ago.
It’s Jaxon’s twenty-eighth birthday. I’ve spent weeks planning a surprise dinner, inviting his closest friends, arranging everything perfectly.
The dining room is decorated. The food is ready. Everyone is waiting.
Jaxon is two hours late.
When he finally arrives, he barely glances at the decorations or the gathered pack members. Just heads straight for the bourbon, pours himself a drink, and settles into conversation with the visiting Alphas as if this is just another business dinner.
