Chapter 34

Jaxon

I’m walking through the main hall that afternoon when I hear Cassandra’s voice from the top of the stairs.

“Liam, careful with those-oh!”

I look up just in time to see her trip over something-the edge of the carpet, maybe, or her own feet. The basket of laundry she’s carrying goes flying as she pitches forward toward the stairs.

Instinct takes over.

I’m moving before I think, crossing the distance in seconds, catching her before she can tumble down the steps. Her weight crashes into me and I steady us both, one arm around her waist, the other braced

against the railing.

“I’ve got you,” I say. “You’re okay.”

Cassandra clings to me, breathing hard. “I’m so sorry. I didn’t see-thank you. You saved me.

“Are you hurt?”

“No, I-just shaken.” She looks up at me, her amber eyes wide with lingering fear. “If you hadn’t been there…”

“But I was.” I help her to a more stable position, making sure she has her footing, but she wobbles and I keep my hands on her shoulders until she’s more steady. “Be more careful on the stairs, Cassie. You could’ve been hurt badly, or worse.”

“Of course. I’m sorry.” She touches my arm briefly. “Thank you, Jaxon.”

Movement catches my eye. I glance past Cassandra to see the housekeeper hurrying over, concern written across her face. And beyond her, standing in the doorway to the sitting room-

Skye.

She’s watching us. Me with my arm still steadying Cassandra, her hand on my arm, both of us closer

than we should be.

For a second, something flickers across Skye’s face. Then it’s gone, replaced by that blank, neutral expression I’ve come to hate.

She turns and walks away.

“I should go,” I tell Cassandra, already moving toward where Skye disappeared.

I catch up to her in the hallway outside the library. “Skye, wait.”

She stops, turns to face me. “Yes?”

“That wasn’t what it looked like.”

“I know.” Her voice is calm, almost polite. “You were helping her. It’s fine.”

The easy dismissal bothers me more than anger would have. I expected… something. Hurt, jealousy. accusation. Instead, she’s just accepting it. Unbothered.

“You don’t seem upset,” I say, unable to keep the edge from my voice.

Skye looks at me with mild confusion. “Should I be? You caught someone who was falling. That’s what Alphas do.”

The reasonableness of it should satisfy me. Instead, it leaves me unsettled. Where’s the woman who used to watch me with such longing? The one who tried so hard to please me, to earn my attention?

When did she stop caring what I do? 1

“I just wanted you to know,” I say, feeling ridiculous now. “It was innocent.”

“Okay.” She tilts her head slightly. “Was there something else?”

“No. 1- I shake my head. “No.”

She pulls her arm free from where I’d caught it without me even realizing I was holding her. “I have Luna

duties to attend to.”

And she walks away, leaving me standing in the empty hallway, vaguely irritated in a way I can’t explain.

That evening, I’m in my office reviewing territorial agreements when movement in the garden catches

my eye.

Skye.

She’s sitting on one of the stone benches near the rose bushes, her phone pressed to her ear. And she’s smiling-actually smiling, something I haven’t seen her do around me in months.

Who is she talking to?

The jealousy that hits me is irrational and consuming. My wolf surges forward, possessive and territorial, demanding to know who’s making our mate smile like that.
