Chapter 60

Nicolai

I’ve been in this inn for three days, and I’m losing my damn mind.

Not for the first time I find myself wondering what the hell is happening to me. I’ve built my reputation on being in control at all times, in all circumstances. In my line of work, it’s what keeps me alive. It’s why people fear me. I’m known for always having the upper hand.

In the past three years since I took over the Woolf “family business” my control has never once wavered. Three years of feeling nothing, needing no one, then one word from her and I’m right back to that teenage boy, pining over a girl who was never meant to be mine.

But it was seeing her again that truly sealed my fate. I’ve always found her beautiful, but in the time since I saw her last she’d become fucking stunning! All womanly curves and sexy as sin. I should have kept my distance, helped from afar and left it at that. But something about Skye Winters has always made me leap before I look.

That’s my only excuse for finding myself in this dusty room two towns over from Ironwood Pack territory instead of at home in my penthouse, enjoying my expensive scotch and killer views. I’m far enough away not to draw too much attention but close enough to reach Skye within an hour if needed.

If she calls.

She hasn’t called.

“You’re pacing,” Dimitri observes from where he’s sitting at the small desk, doing actual work. “You’ve worn a path in the carpet.”

I force myself to stop. Stand still. It lasts approximately ten seconds before I’m moving again.

“She hasn’t called,” I say.

“She will. When she’s ready.”

“What if she’s not safe? What if Vale is-”

“Then she’ll call,” Dimitri interrupts, his voice firm. “You can’t help her by hovering. You have to let her do this her way.”

I know he’s right. But that doesn’t make it easier.

The news about the pregnancy hit me like a freight train when she told me. Skye, pregnant with Vale’s child Trapped even more thoroughly than before because now there’s a baby involved. An heir that Vale will use as leverage to keep her exactly where she is.

And I’m sitting here, two towns away, completely useless and can’t stop thinking that it should be my baby she’s carrying Does that make me a selfish prick?

“You’re thinking about the baby,” Dimitri says, reading me too easily after fifteen years of partnership.

“Of course I’m thinking about the baby.” I finally sit down, restless energy still thrumming through my veins. “She’s pregnant and planning to leave her mate. That’s not just complicated-it’s dangerous.”

“For her or for you?”

I look at Dimitri sharply. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“It means you’ve been in love with her for years, and now she’s carrying another man’s child.” Dimitri’s voice is matter-of-fact. “That’s not an easy thing to process, even for someone as controlled as you.”

“I’m not in love with her.” I can’t be, can I? Not after this many years apart.

“Nicolai.” Dimitri’s look is pitying. “We’ve known each other since we were twelve. Don’t insult my

intelligence.”

I want to argue. But what’s the point? Dimitri sees through me like glass.

“Fine,” I admit. “I care about her. More than I should. But that doesn’t change anything. She needs a friend right now, not… whatever else I might want to offer.”

“Does she know how you feel?”

By day four, I can’t take it anymore.

I arrange a formal visit to the Ironwood Pack-brief, professional, completely legitimate. Just following up on trade discussions from my previous visit.

Jaxon receives me in his office with barely concealed hostility. A lesser Alpha might be cowed by his cool reception. I simply find it amusing. He may not be happy to see me, but it would take a braver man

than him to turn me away.

“Alpha Woolf.” His voice is cold. “Back so soon?”

“Just following up on our previous discussions, Alpha Vale.” I keep my tone professional, neutral. “These matters require ongoing dialogue.”

The testosterone in the room is thick enough to cut. Two Alphas, circling each other, both knowing

there’s more happening here than trade agreements.

“Of course.” Jaxon gestures to a chair. “Please, sit. Let’s discuss these… ongoing matters.”

The meeting is exactly as tedious as expected. Trade routes. Tariff agreements. Border security. All things that could have been handled via correspondence but give me a legitimate reason to be here.

But we both know there’s only one reason I really came.

To see her.
