Pursuing My Rejected Luna novel Skye Chapter 72

Chapter 72

Skye

I stare at Jaxon standing on the terrace, and something inside me finally breaks. Not with drama or tears. Not with shouting or accusations. I no longer have the energy or the emotional investment for those antics. Those were for a younger Skye.

This older, more world-weary Skye just… breaks.

Cleanly. Decisively. Like a bone that’s been fractured for too long finally snapping completely under

pressure.

“You followed me,” I repeat, my voice ice-cold. “You promised not to invade my privacy. You promised to give me space. And you followed me like I’m some prisoner who can’t be trusted.”

No emotion, no accusation. Just a statement of facts.

“You were alone with another Alpha-”

“I was having a conversation,” I interrupt. “A private conversation that you had no right to eavesdrop on.”

“He was making a move on you-”

“He was being a friend.” My voice cuts through his excuses like a blade. “Something you’ve never been.”

Jaxon’s face flushes with anger. “He wants you, Skye. Are you really so naive that you can’t see it?”

“And what if he does?” The words come out before I can stop them, my energy finally matching his own. At least he’s honest about it. At least he respects me enough to let me make my own choices instead of following me around like I’m your property.”

“You’re my mate-”

“No.” I shake my head. “I’ve never been that. You never let me be that. I’m done. We’re done.”

I walk past him without another word, heading back toward our suite.

He follows, of course, because he can’t help himself. And I’m too tired to care.

Back in the suite, I pull my suitcase from the closet and start packing. Doing my best to pretend like

Jaxon is not even there.

“Skye, please, just listen-”

“No.” I don’t stop packing. Don’t even look at him. “I’m done listening. I’m done giving chances and I’m done pretending this can work.”

“You agreed to give me time-”

“And you wasted it.” I snap, finally turning to face him. “You promised not to monitor me. You did. You

promised not to let jealousy control you. It did. You promised to change, and you’re exactly the same possessive, controlling man you’ve always been.”

“That’s not fair-”

“Isn’t it?” I zip my bag closed with more force than necessary. “You don’t trust me. You never have. Maybe first impressions are as powerful as they say and you’ll never overcome the first impression you had of me.” I say, all the fight draining out of me. “I can’t spend any more of my life proving I’m not the villain you’ve decided I am.”

Jaxon runs a hand through his hair, frustration and desperation warring on his face. “I made a mistake.

One mistake. You can’t throw away our entire marriage over-

“One mistake?” I laugh, but there’s no humor in it. Only incredulity. “Jaxon, you’ve made nothing but

The drive back to Ironwood Pack territory is silent and tense. But it’s still better than the argument I expected him to raise again, knowing I’m a captive audience.

Jaxon grips the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles are white, it clearly costing him to keep his mouth shut. I suppose I should be grateful for the small mercy but I’m not sure I’m capable of the sentiment any longer.

I stare out the window, one hand resting on my stomach, feeling the baby move inside me. It’s an odd sensation, one I’m not quite used to yet. But it’s comforting all the same.

I’m doing this for you, I think. So you don’t grow up watching your mother be slowly destroyed by a man who can’t see past his own pride.

When we arrive back at the Alpha house, I practically leap from the car. I don’t go to our bedroom. I go directly to my office, close the door, and start making calls.

I don’t plan to stay in this house a moment longer than I have to. But getting out means I have to have all my ducks in a row.

I just hope they all line up the way I planned.
