Thankfully, the council doesn’t make an immediate decision. I have a feeling it wouldn’t go my way

they did.

if

“We need time to deliberate,” Elder Patricia says. “To consult pack law. To consider the implications for

pack stability.”

“How long?” Skye asks.

“Three days. We’ll reconvene then for individual testimonies from both Alpha Jaxon and Luna Skye.” Elder Graham’s expression is grave. “This is not a decision we take lightly.”

The session ends, and I watch Skye leave with her father and Diana flanking her like guards.

She doesn’t look back.

Over the next two days, I can almost feel the pack dividing.

Some support Skye. I hear it in whispered conversations that stop when I enter a room. See it in the sympathetic looks pack members give her, the way they go out of their way to be helpful to her or wish

her well.

They’ve watched how she’s been treated. How hard she’s tried. How gracious she’s been even in the face of humiliation.

Others support me. Traditional wolves who believe in the sanctity of the mate bond. Who think Skye should stay because of the pregnancy. Who see her request for divorce as abandoning her duty. I should be grateful to have anyone on my side at all, but I know I don’t deserve it.

The pack is splitting down the middle.

And it’s my fault.

It’s the second day since the hearing and I’ve dragged Noah to my office in an attempt to get some actual work done. We do still have a pack to run. But my wolf doesn’t seem to care about that, refusing to let me focus.

“This is bad, Jax.” Noah drops his pen, finally giving up the pretense of working.

“I know.” I sigh, scrubbing my hands over my face.

“No, I don’t think you do. The pack is fracturing. Half think Skye is a hero for standing up to you. Half think she’s betraying pack tradition. People are at each other’s throats, arguing their side. We’re on the verge of a civil war here.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“Let her go.” Noah’s voice is firm. “Stop fighting. Agree to the divorce. Work out custody arrangements

like civilized adults and focus on helping the pack find a way to move on.”

“I can’t-”

“You can. You just don’t want to.” Noah leans against the desk. “Because it’s not about love, is it? It’s about control. About not losing.”

I understand why he believes that. Not too long ago, it would have been true. Now, I’m not so sure.

“I don’t know.” I tell him honestly.

Later that night, I’m still hiding in my office when there’s a knock on the door. Cassandra slips inside without waiting for permission, her expression full of concern.

I’m so sorry, Jaxon. This must be devastating.”

I don’t respond. I mean, she’s right. But she’s also not the person I want to share my feelings with.

She settles into the chair across from my desk, her movements careful like she’s afraid I might attack at any moment. Again, she’s not wrong.

“You know…” Her voice turns thoughtful. “I hate to even suggest this, but… are you sure the baby is

yours?”

She goes, but not before I catch the flash of fury in her eyes. Finally a real emotion from her. And it’s

hatred.

After she’s gone, I sink back into my chair. Her words echo in my head despite my best efforts to ignore

them.

Are you sure the baby is yours?

The question was meant to poison me against Skye. But what if there’s truth to it? What if Skye and

Nicolai…

I hate myself for even considering it but I can’t make the thought go away.

The door opens again. Noah stands there, his expression serious.

“The council wants to speak with you. They’re calling in both you and Skye tomorrow for individual

testimonies.”

The legal battle has officially begun.

And I have no idea how to win it.

Or if I even deserve to.
