Pursuing My Rejected Luna novel Skye Chapter 78
Chapter 78
Jaxon
Too late. Everything I’ve done right has been fucking too late!
Asking Skye for another chance was the right thing. The only thing. But I realized it too late. Too much damage was done. Damage I caused.
Then watching Cassandra leave my office, her face a perfect mask of wounded innocence, and I finally saw through it. Saw the manipulation behind every tear, the calculation behind every carefully crafted vulnerability, the coldness in her eyes when she thinks no one is watching.
Too late, I realized Noah was right. She’s poison. And I’ve been drinking it for months.
After she left, I sank into my chair and replayed our entire relationship in my mind.
The convenient timing of her return. Right when I was starting to notice the distance between Skye and me, right when the guilt was becoming unbearable.
The way Liam’s “emergencies” always seemed to happen when things were improving with Skye. Every time we had a moment of connection, Cassandra would come up with some crisis that demanded my immediate attention.
The subtle undermining disguised as support. “Skye seems distant.” “Maybe she doesn’t understand pack business like I do.” “You can always talk to me, Jaxon.”
Then, the suggestion that Skye’s baby might not be mine. Nothing more than a poorly disguised desperate attempt to destroy whatever fragile trust I’d managed to gain with Skye. Cassandra was hoping to isolate me completely. To make me doubt the one person who’s been faithful through everything. And I nearly let her.
I’ve been played. And I was too blind, too arrogant, too caught up in my own issues to see it.
I
Shaking those thoughts away, I try to refocus on the day ahead of me. I’ve been summoned before the council. But first, I need to make sure Cassandra is gone!
I go to the guest house and find it empty. Cassandra and Liam packed and left sometime in the night. No goodbye. No final plea for reconsideration. Just… gone. Exactly as I’d hoped.
I stand in the empty living room, looking at the space where I allowed them to live, right under Skye’s nose, destroying my marriage one day at a time. How could I have done that?
“Alpha?” A voice behind me startles me.
I turn to find one of the omegas who helps with housekeeping.
“Did you see them leave?”
“Around midnight. She had a car waiting.” The omega hesitates. “Some of the pack are… talking. About

why you sent them away.”
“Let them talk.”
“They’re saying you threw out your son’s mother. That you’re-”
“I know what they’re saying.” I cut her off, not unkindly. “It doesn’t matter. Cassandra needed to leave. That’s all anyone needs to know.”
I walk back to the Alpha house, leaving the empty guest house behind. I should have done this months ago. Should never have let her back into my life in the first place.
Liam may be my son, I can’t take back that night we spent together no matter how much I might want to. But I could have accepted him without giving Cassandra so much power over our lives. Skye would have
understood, would have supported me. If I’d let her.
But I was so drunk on my own power, almost giddy at the prospect of using Cassandra to punish Skye for her perceived sins, that I couldn’t see I was really only punishing myself.
Finally, I make my way to the council for their decision, unable to stall any longer. The council chamber feels smaller than usual. More suffocating.
Skye is already there when I arrive, standing with her father and Diana. She doesn’t look at me. What I wouldn’t give for just one look from her. The kind filled with love the way she used to look at me.
“Skye.” I ignore the elders, focusing only on her. “Please. Don’t do this.”
She finally looks at me, and her expression is calm. Composed. Final.
“It’s already done,” she says quietly.
Elder Vincent stands. “We’ll reconvene in one week to discuss custody arrangements. Until then, Luna Skye will remain in the Alpha house in separate quarters. Both parties are expected to conduct themselves with dignity during this transition.”
The session ends. Skye leaves with her father and Diana.
And I’m left standing in the council chamber, the weight of what just happened crushing down on me.
I’ve lost her.
Really, truly lost her.
