One of my informants-a wolf who works in the Greenwood River Pack’s administrative office-calls with an update I didn’t ask for but apparently thought I needed.
“The Alpha’s daughter, the woman you’re having us watch, you know she’s pregnant, right?” he says. Like visibly pregnant. Maybe four, five months along?”
The description hits me harder than it should. I’ve known she was pregnant since before she left Ironwood. Known the baby was Vale’s. Known this child would be a permanent tie to the man who hurt her. But hearing it described-visibly pregnant-makes it real in a way it wasn’t before.
Skye is carrying Vale’s child. In a few months, she’ll give birth to Vale’s heir. And Vale will be in her life forever because of it.
Part of me wants to be angry about that. Jealous, even. But mostly I just feel protective. That baby is part of Skye. Which means I’d protect it with my life if given the chance.
The thought should terrify me. Instead, it feels… right.
I’m still stewing over that thought when Dimitri finds me in my office again, staring at nothing.
“We need to talk.” He insists. Great, here we go again.
“Do we? Because I really don’t need another lecture from you.”
“Yes.” He sits down across from my desk, his expression serious, completely ignoring what I just said. You need to decide what you’re doing here.”
“I’m working-”
“Bullshit. You’re obsessing over a woman who doesn’t even know you’re thinking about her.” Dimitri leans forward. “Do you even realize you missed two important meetings today? I covered for you while you’re here sulking. And for what?”
“I don’t know,” I admit.
“Then figure it out, Nic. You know I’ve got your back. Always. But I’m not you. And sooner or later, people are gonna notice you’re not yourself. That’s bad for business. Not to mention, dangerous.”
“Fuck! I know. I just… she needs space-”
“She needs to heal, yes. But what happens after? When she’s healed and ready to move forward?” Dimitri pauses. “Are you going to be in her life? Or are you just going to keep watching from the shadows like some kind of creep?”
“I’m not-”
“And if you do decide you want more…” Dimitri’s voice is gentle now. “You need to be honest with

yourself about what that means. She’s pregnant with another man’s child. Can you handle that?”
Can I? The question hangs in the air.
Can I be with a woman who’s carrying another man’s baby? Can I raise that child as my own? Can I stand watching Vale visit his son, knowing that child could have been mine if circumstances were different?
“I don’t know,” I say honestly.
“Then you need to figure it out. Before you do something stupid like confessing feelings she’s not ready to hear. Or getting us all dead because our enemies realize you’re off your game!”
I sit in the dark office, turning his words over in my mind. What do I want from Skye? I’ve told myself for months that I just want her to be safe. To be free. To be happy.
But if I’m honest-really honest-I want more than that. I want to be the one who makes her happy, the one she turns to when she needs support. I want to be in her life in a way that matters.
But she’s pregnant with Vale’s child. And I don’t know if I can handle that. Or if I even deserve the chance
to try.
I’m not a good man, even if she makes me want to be. Holy, fuck! What is she doing to me?
But if Skye is in danger-if someone is actually watching her or her family-then doing nothing would be the stupid choice. Wouldn’t it?
I pick up my phone. Put it down. Pick it up again.
And sit in the dark, torn between the need to protect her and the knowledge that she needs space to
heal. Not knowing which impulse to follow. Not knowing if I’m seeing a real threat or manufacturing one.
Just knowing that the thought of Skye in danger makes my wolf howl with the need to act.
And I don’t know how much longer I can ignore that call.
