I’d spent the evening working, or trying to. In truth, I couldn’t keep my mind off of Skye long enough to accomplish much. Was she safe? Did she need me? I hadn’t heard back from the tracker who contacted me. I couldn’t answer those questions and I fucking needed answers.

Not so long ago, I would have solved this level of stress by finding relief in the hot, wet cunt of one of the numerous women more than willing to offer themselves. But since laying eyes on Skye at Ironwood all those weeks ago, the thought turned my stomach. Instead, I’d decided to turn in early. Alone. What the hell was this woman doing to me?

I’d been asleep for maybe an hour when my phone lit up the darkness, the number of my informant in

Greenwood River Pack flashing on the screen.

“There’s been an attack at Greenwood River Pack,” he said the moment I answered. “The Alpha’s daughter-Skye Winters. She’s unharmed, but it was close. Very close.”

I was out of bed and dressed before he finished speaking.

“Details,” I demanded, pulling on clothes with one hand while holding the phone with the other.

“Someone grabbed her in the garden. She fought back, screamed, the guards responded immediately but the attacker escaped.” His voice was grim. “Had to be an inside job. How else could they get that close in broad daylight? And they knew what they were doing, had an exit strategy.”

My blood ran cold. Someone put their hands on Skye. Threatened her. Threatened the baby.

“I’m on my way,” I said.

I didn’t wait for more information. Didn’t call ahead to warn Marco I was coming. I just grabbed my keys and headed for the garage. Dimitri intercepted me in the hallway, already dressed. Of course he’d heard. The man sleeps like a wolf-lightly and ready for anything.

“Where are we going?”

“Greenwood River Pack. Someone attacked Skye.” I didn’t have to explain further. Dimitri just nodded and

followed me to the car.

The drive should take three hours. I intended to make it in two and a half. Dimitri doesn’t comment on the speed, just braces himself against the door as I take curves faster than I should.

“You’re not thinking clearly,” he says finally.

“I’m thinking perfectly clearly. Someone tried to hurt her.”

“And you’re going to do what? Storm in like some caveman and drag her off to your cave? Should I check

the trunk for your club?” Smartass!

“If that’s what it takes. Though I hope knocking her over the head won’t be necessary.”

“Nic-”

“She’s in danger, Dimitri. Someone attacked her in broad daylight at her father’s pack. If they’re willing to do that, they’ll try again.”

“I know. But you need to get control of yourself before we arrive. You show up looking like you’re about to murder someone, and Marco will see it for what it is and he won’t let you near her.”

“What it is?”

“You’re in love with her. And she just got out of a shit relationship. Alpha Winters won’t let you put that kind of pressure on her.”

I’m in love with her. I don’t deny it. Can’t deny it.

“She’s not safe there,” I say instead.

“So you’re bringing her to Woolf territory.”

“Yes.” At least I’m going to try.

Dimitri is quiet for a moment. “You know what that means, right? Having her under your roof? Seeing her every day? Watching her grow more pregnant with another man’s child?”

I ignore the knowing tone in Dimitri’s voice and press the accelerator harder.

Present Time

We arrive at Greenwood River Pack as the sun rises. From the looks of it, security at the borders has been doubled. There are guards everywhere, all on high alert. But they recognize me immediately-word must have spread that I was coming.

We’re escorted directly to the Alpha house. Marco is waiting on the front steps, looking like he hasn’t slept. I’m out of the car before it fully stops.

“Where is she? Is she safe?”

“In her room. Resting. The doctor checked her last night-she and the baby are fine.” Marco’s voice is steady, but I can see the strain around his eyes. “But whoever came for her will try again. As much as I hate sending my daughter away, that’s why she needs to go with you.”

The admission costs him. I can see it. But he’s putting Skye’s safety above his pride. That earns my

respect.

“When can we leave?” I ask, anxious to get her home where I know she’ll be safe.

“As soon as she’s ready. We discussed it last night during the call with you. She agreed, but…” Marco hesitates. “She’s having second thoughts this morning. Worried about being a burden.”

Of course she is.

“Let me talk to her,” I say. “Please.”

Marco studies me for a long moment. Whatever he sees in my face must satisfy him, because he nods.

“Diana’s with her now. I’ll let them know you’re here.”

I watch him go and, despite the circumstances, excitement and anticipation wash over me knowing I’m about to see Skye again. I just hope she’s willing to listen to reason and doesn’t put up too much of a fight about coming with me. If she does…

I may need that club after all.
