Pursuing My Rejected Luna novel Skye Chapter 95

Chapter 95

Skye

“I think I’m overdressed.” I say when I meet Nicolai for dinner.

I smooth the skirt of my dress nervously and shift my weight on my uncomfortable high-heeled shoes. He’s still wearing his suit pants but he’s discarded his jacket and tie. The top two buttons of his white button down are undone and his sleeves are rolled up, revealing his tan forearms. And he’s barefoot.

“Not at all.” He makes a show of running his eyes over me from head to toe. “I think you look stunning! But I want you to be comfortable, Skye. No need to wear anything you’re not comfortable in. If

formalwear is required, I’ll warn you ahead of time Deal”

“Deal.” I nod, taking his outstretched hand and letting him lead me to the table

We eat in comfortable silence for a few minutes. Then Nicolai asks, ‘How are you really feeling? Not the polite answer you give everyone else. The truth.”

I consider lying. Giving him the same ‘I’m fine’ I give everyone else But something about the genuine concern in his eyes makes me tell the truth

“Scared. Exhausted. Grateful to be here but guilty about imposing Worried about the baby. Worried about my father’s pack. Just… a lot.”

“That’s honest,” Nicolai says. “Thank you for that

“You asked for the truth.”

“I did. And I’ll give you truth in return.” He sets down his fork, meets my eyes. “You’re not imposing. You’re not a burden. Having you here is… it’s exactly what I want. So please, stop feeling guilty about

accepting help.”

The sincerity in his voice does something to me. Makes me feel seen in a way I haven’t felt in years.

“Okay,” I say quietly. “I’ll try.”

After dinner, Nicolai has to take a business call.

“I’m sorry,” he says. “It’s urgent. Make yourself comfortable-library’s down the hall if you want

something to read.”

I nod and wander toward the library while he steps into his office. But I can hear his voice through the partially open door And it’s different.

Hard Commanding Nothing like the gentle tone he uses with me.

“I don’t care what he thinks he’s owed. The shipment goes through our routes or it doesn’t go through at

“And tell him if he tries to circumvent us again, we’ll take it personally.”

The threat in those words is unmistakable. This is the Alpha other Alphas fear. The head of the Woolf family with their reputation for handling problems… permanently.

He’s dangerous. Powerful. Ruthless when he needs to be. And somehow, that doesn’t scare me. Because I’ve seen how gentle he is with me. How carefully he modulates his power around me. The contrast is striking.

When Nicolai finishes his call and finds me in the library, his expression immediately softens

“You should rest,” he says. “It’s been a long day.”

From dangerous businessman to gentle protector in seconds

“I’m okay,” I say.

“Skye.” His voice is kind but firm. “You were attacked yesterday You left your father’s pack this morning. You’ve been traveling and dealing with stress and change. You need rest.

“Are you always this bossy?” I cringe the moment the words leave my mouth but he just smirks at my

audacity.

“Only when people I care about aren’t taking care of themselves “He retorts.

The casual way he says people I care about makes my heart skip And if shooing me off to bed is his way of caring for me… I think I want to let him.

“Okay,” I concede. “I’ll rest.”

He walks me back to my suite and I’m honestly grateful. He probably knew I’d get turned around if he left me to wander alone. At the doorway to my wing, I pause.

“Thank you for this. For everything. I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you.” I hope he can hear the sincerity

in my voice

Nicolai steps closer, but maintains respectful distance. Close enough that I can feel the warmth of him. Far enough that I don’t feel crowded.

My heart starts racing “And if I did?” The question slips out before I can stop it. “Want there to be more?”

The question surprises us both. Nicolai turns to face me fully, his expression intense.

“Then I’d tell you that you just got out of a terrible marriage. That you’re pregnant and vulnerable. And that I’d rather wait until you’re sure you’re truly ready-in every way-than rush into something you might

regret

“And if I don’t regret it?” I whisper

Nicolais control visibly wavers His eyes darken. His hands grip the railing like he’s physically

restraining himself

“Then we’d have to be very, very careful,” he says, his voice low and rough. “Because I’m not sure I could let you go once I had you.”

The words send heat through me. Want. Promise. Warning. All wrapped up in one devastating

confession.

“Nicolai-”

“You should go to bed, Skye. His voice is strained. “Before I do something you’re not ready for.”

I should listen. Should step back. Should protect myself and this fragile thing growing between us. But I

don’t want to.

For the first time in years, I feel wanted. Seen. Desired by someone who actually sees me.

And I’m not ready to walk away from that.

Not yet.
