Donald’s face darkened as he realized Jackson was seriously comparing him to a beggar. He couldn’t hold back his rage any longer. “So you’re really not going to give me 300 thousand dollars?” he demanded.

Jackson shot back, “Go home and submit a request first.”

That pushed Donald over the edge. He kicked a stool hard and yelled, “You should’ve died back when you tried to save Sibley in that kidnapping.”

After cursing, Donald spun around, ready to storm out.

But Ollie blocked his way, catching a look from Jackson and moving in before Donald could leave.

“Ollie, what are you-” Donald started, but before he could finish, Ollie punched him right in the face.

Donald grunted, stumbled back a couple of steps, and stared at Ollie in disbelief.

Jackson’s voice was cold and distant. “Dad, that’s for running your mouth and digging up my old wounds. Next time you want to threaten me, just remember what happened to your illegitimate daughter, Sibley, when she disrespected me.”

Donald couldn’t believe Jackson would actually hit him, not caring about his dignity as a father. He clutched his face, gritting his teeth. “Fine, real nice. Son hits his own father. You’re something else. I’ll remember this.”

Swallowing his humiliation, he slammed the door behind him and stormed out.

Cassian didn’t go after him. He stayed in the hospital room, looking wounded. “Jackson, are you really going to blow up over Sibley being Dad’s illegitimate kid?

“Are you seriously thinking about cutting him off for that? You know, for the past three years, things were so good between us, Dad, and Sibley…”

Jackson cut him off. “Cassian, you know what? After Mom died, getting you back into the Thornton family was the happiest thing I did before my legs were ruined.”

He sighed, almost sounding regretful. “Too bad you and Sibley couldn’t keep it together. If you’d just kept up the act with me a few more years, maybe I would’ve gladly let you use me as your stepping stone.”

Cassian’s expression shifted, and he hurried to explain, “Jackson, do you really think we planned Sibley’s kidnapping?”

He went on, “I’ll admit it. When I first came back, I honestly hated you a bit. We’re both Mom and Dad’s kids, but you got to stay with the Thornton family, living in luxury, while I was sent out to struggle just to survive.

“But after seeing how good you were to me, I got over it. I was sent away because of that damn fortune–teller, not because of you.

“What right did I have to blame you? And if you hadn’t fought for me with Grandpa, I might not have even come back home three years ago.

“So, deep down, I’ve always been grateful for everything you’ve done for me. How could I ever want to hurt you, much less see you dead?

“As for why Sibley and I started acting different after you lost the use of your legs, honestly, I was afraid that if we pitied you, you’d just get more self–conscious.

“So I figured being tough on you would fire you up. I never thought you’d take it the wrong way, or be so rough with Sibley

“Jackson, we’re real brothers. No matter how twisted I get, I’d never betray you or hurt you after everything you’ve done for

me.”

As Cassian said so, his eyes reddening, tears almost spilling out.

Jackson listened to Cassian’s emotional plea, but his expression stayed cold and distant. “I’ll find out if you and Sibley really planned that kidnapping together. If it wasn’t you, I won’t make things hard for you.”

Jackson said, “You didn’t just stick around to try and win me over with feelings, did you? Oh, right, yesterday I told you not to join the company, and Dad said he’d go talk it out with Grandpa.

“Looks like that didn’t work, and Grandpa’s not letting you get a chance to work there, huh?”

Cassian looked embarrassed as Jackson called him out directly. He gave a bitter smile. “Yeah, you got it, Jackson. Grandpa saw all the major projects falling apart and decided I’m not fit to run the company.

“He banned me from the company for good. If I really want experience, he said I should go find a job somewhere else and learn on my own.”

Jackson nodded, agreeing. “Honestly, that’s a pretty good idea. If you can’t get experience at a Thornton company, go try your hand at some other big company. Nobody’s going to pamper you there. That’s where you’ll really see what you can do.”

Cassian was stunned, at a loss for words.

Jackson waved his hand casually and went on, “If there’s nothing else, just go home and think about how to help Dad with his application. He’s getting up there in years. Don’t let 300 thousand dollars get him all worked up.”

Cassian was silent for a moment before finally saying quietly, “I understand. Take care of yourself, Jackson.”

He turned around, and the obedient look he’d worn just seconds ago was instantly swallowed by shadow as he strode out of the hospital room.

Jackson watched Cassian’s retreating figure, his eyes growing even darker and colder.

Outside the hospital, the streets were bustling with people coming and going.

Cassian quickly slipped into the waiting black sedan.

As soon as he got in, Donald, sitting in the back seat, asked with a grim face, “So? Did you manage to win Jackson’s trust back?”

Cassian shook his head, looking heavy–hearted. “No, no matter what I said, he still doesn’t trust us.”

Donald’s face grew even darker, frustration clear in his voice. “This is all Sibley’s fault. She was so cocky and reckless, and now Jackson’s on high alert. Things are a mess. I’m broke, and I can’t do a damn thing.”

Cassian let out a frustrated sigh, his voice full of helplessness. “Yeah, facing Jackson with just the two of us feels almost impossible now.”

The car was quiet for a moment.

After a bit, Donald couldn’t stand his growing anxiety any longer. “Is there really nothing we can do? We can’t just sit here

and wait for disaster to hit us.”

Cassian thought for a moment and said, “Jackson’s engagement party with the real Binder heiress–everyone from the Thornton family will be there, right?

“If we stir up some drama among them, I guarantee there are plenty who’d jump at the chance to bring Jackson down. We just let them tear each other apart, then pick up the pieces and cash in.”

Donald nodded, agreeing. “Exactly. Jackson’s been keeping my brothers and sisters under his thumb for years. Now that they see a shot at splitting up the Thornton fortune, you can bet they’ll be itching to make a move.”

‘But there’s one thing that really worries me,” Cassian said in a low voice. “Ollie told me the real Binder heiress is working on Jackson’s legs. What if she actually pulls it off? That’s what scares me most.

Maybe we should find someone to deal with Victoria… at the very least, ruin her hands so she can’t treat him. Dad, you heard Calvin at the welcome party. He wouldn’t shut up about how amazing Victoria’s medical skills are. She might actually be legit.”

As long as Jackson was crippled, Cassian still had a shot at becoming the Thornton family’s heir.

But if Jackson’s legs healed, Cassian would be finished.

so there was no way he’d let anyone cure Jackson’s legs.
