Hearing his sister’s concerned words, Simon slowly looked away and turned to Curtis, who was lying quietly in the hospital bed. “It’s been a busy day, so I figured I wouldn’t be able to sleep early anyway.
“I thought I’d come check on Curtis, and I brought you some pastries–so you’ll have something to munch on if you get hungry tonight.”
As he spoke, he set the bag down on the nightstand.
When Angelica saw the familiar paper bag, her face instantly lit up with a smile. “Wow, you got them from my favorite bakery. Thanks, Simon.”
“I know you love them, so I picked them up just for you,” Simon said, settling onto a stool. “I’ll keep Curtis company for a bit before heading home.”
“Sure,” Angelica replied. Seeing that Simon wasn’t planning to leave anytime soon, she bit her lip, lowered her gaze, and spoke softly, “Mom was really upset today.
“Grandpa already got to the bottom of the car accident, and the security footage proves Curtis was the one who tampered with Victoria’s brakes.
“As compensation, Grandpa is granting Victoria 10% of the pharmaceutical company and 30% of Brightstar Entertainment.”
Simon’s eyes widened in disbelief, his voice rising uncontrollably. “Angelica, did you just say Grandpa is giving all that–10% of the pharmaceutical company and 30% of Brightstar Entertainment–to Victoria?”
Angelica nodded with a sigh. “Yeah, that’s the amount.”
Simon hadn’t been to the hospital that afternoon, so he was completely in the dark about all this.
Simon was fuming. “This is just insane. Even if Curtis messed up and Victoria deserves some compensation, this is way too much.
“I’ve been working my tail off running Brightstar Entertainment for years, and Grandpa only gave me 10% of the shares. What has Victoria, that outsider who just showed up in the family, ever done to deserve this?
“And she’s about to marry Jackson. Giving her all those shares is basically handing everything over to him. Grandpa’s really
lost it.”
Angelica explained, “If it was just Victoria, she’d only get 10% of the pharmaceutical company. But Jackson stepped in and insisted his share go to Victoria too.
“Grandpa had no choice but to agree, so now she’s getting 30% of Brightstar Entertainment on top of that.”
“Damn it.” Simon slammed his fist against the wall.
This accident really hit their family hard.
After a while, he finally managed to calm down. He looked at Angelica with a serious expression and said, “Angelica, don’t worry about the company for now. Just focus on what Dad said. Try to get Oliver to forgive you.”
With that, he gave her shoulder a gentle pat, offering her some encouragement.
Angelica nodded. “Okay, Simon, I’ll do my best.”

After that, putting on a show of trying to wake Curtis up, Angelica started sharing stories about the fun times she, Simon, and Curtis had together before Victoria returned to the Binder family.
As Simon listened, the gloom in his expression started to lift.
But Curtis, barely clinging to consciousness, was honestly nauseated hearing Angelica talk about the good old days. Wow, she’s a real piece of work, he thought. ‘One second she’s tearing me down, and now she’s playing the perfect angel for Simon.‘
By the end, Angelica’s voice was trembling with tears. “If I’d just gone ahead and married Jackson, Mom and Dad wouldn’t have had to bring Victoria back to step in for me. Maybe Curtis wouldn’t be in this mess now.”
Simon pulled her into a gentle hug, his voice soft. “Angelica, don’t think like that. Bringing Victoria back wasn’t just your call. It was a decision we all made with Mom and Dad. Don’t carry all the guilt yourself.”
Curtis desperately wanted to yell, ‘Simon, don’t let her crocodile tears fool you!
But he just couldn’t.
After comforting Angelica for a while, Simon finally released her. “Angelica, I’m heading home. Curtis is in your hands tonight. I’m counting on you.”
Angelica dabbed at her tears and nodded. “You can trust me, Simon. I’ll make sure Curtis is well taken care of.”
Simon didn’t think much of it. He got up, glanced at Curtis one more time, and was just about to leave when something caught his eye–a small red spot on Curtis’s elbow.
He stopped in his tracks, frowning, and stepped closer to the bed to check out the spot.
Right then, Angelica hurried over and quickly pulled Curtis’s arm back under the blanket, looking a bit flustered. “The weather’s getting chilly, and I wasn’t paying attention. I can’t let Curtis get cold.”
Simon still felt something was off, but Angelica waved her hand as if shooing away a mosquito. “There are still mosquitoes in the hospital. I got bitten a few times myself last night.”
Noticing the little red bites on Angelica’s arm, Simon finally relaxed. “If there are mosquitoes, bring some mosquito repellent tomorrow.”
“Okay,” Angelica nodded.
Simon didn’t say anything else and turned to leave the room.
Angelica saw him off, lingering at the doorway. She waited until Simon had been in the elevator for a good while, making sure he was gone for good, then finally closed the door and let out a long, relieved breath.
“That was a close call,‘ Angelica thought. ‘I almost got busted giving Curtis that IV.
Angelica hurried back to her seat, quickly pulled a small syringe from her bag, and without wasting a second, stuck it into the red mark on Curtis’s elbow.
She pressed the plunger down in one go, then deftly tucked the syringe back into her lipstick tube, hiding it away.
At last, she let out a long, relieved breath.
‘Next time, I really need to be more careful, Angelica thought.

Chapter 108
As Simon rode the elevator, he kept thinking about how Angelica acted tonight. Something felt off.

Honestly, what else could she be doing in there besides looking after Curtis? Maybe I’m just stressed out and imagining things, Simon thought.
He decided to let those suspicions go for now.
But when he got to the basement level, stepped out of the elevator, and got into his car, he just sat there, engine off, unable to shake the doubts swirling in his mind.
He remembered asking Curtis to look into whether anyone had tried to harm Victoria before she came back to the Binder family. ‘I wonder if there’s any word from the people Curtis sent?‘ Simon thought.
The doubts kept gnawing at him. After thinking it over, Simon decided he’d get his hands on Curtis’s phone tomorrow and see who he’d sent to dig up dirt on Victoria–and what they’d actually found.
Finally, Simon pulled out his phone and dialed his assistant.
“How’s that master thief doing?” Simon asked.
“Mr. Binder, rest assured–the antidote worked. He’s still in the hospital for more observation and treatment,” the assistant replied.
Simon continued, “Alright, tomorrow I want you to ask him if he’s up for another job. This one’s easy. No risk at all. And we’ll pay him the same as last time.”
The assistant asked, “So, what do you want him to steal this time, Mr. Binder?”
After a brief pause, Simon finally spoke, “A woman’s purse.”
