The next morning, sunlight poured through the cracks in the curtains, brightening the room.
Victoria stretched lazily, rolled out of bed, splashed some water on her face, and headed downstairs for breakfast.
As she was going downstairs, she glanced toward the front door out of habit. Simon was nowhere to be seen. She had no clue when or how he slipped out last night.
Not that it mattered to her how he left.
Victoria honestly couldn’t care less.
Just then, Zoe came out of the kitchen carrying a tray of steaming breakfast and set it gently on the table. When she saw Victoria, she smiled and greeted her, “Good morning, Miss.”
Then, as if remembering something, she added, “Oh, by the way, Mr. Darell sent someone over with something for you. They said it must be given to you personally.”
With that, Zoe turned and walked into the living room, picked up a vermilion wooden box from the coffee table, and carefully placed it in front of Victoria.
Victoria pulled out a chair, sat down, and opened the box.
Inside, a severed, blood–soaked finger stared back at her, still wearing a diamond ring.
“Ah!” Zoe, standing nearby, let out a shrill scream. She was terrified, her face white as a sheet, fumbling to snatch the box and slam the lid shut, rambling, “Miss, don’t be scared! I’ll get rid of this awful thing right away, so it won’t offend your eyes…”
But in stark contrast to Zoe’s panic, Victoria didn’t even flinch.
She calmly looked at the box and said, “Relax, Zoe. It’s nothing to worry about.” It was like she’d seen this kind of thing a hundred times before.
While Zoe was still looking puzzled, Victoria’s phone started ringing.
She picked up, and Darell’s voice came through, sounding hoarse and weak. “Did you get the present I sent over?”
Victoria couldn’t help but want to laugh, picturing Darell calling her after getting stabbed by her handsome new dad. “Yeah, I saw it. Is that your finger? If so, I’m absolutely loving this gift.”
Darell let out a cold laugh. “Take a closer look. You’ve known Daisy for years. Can’t even recognize her finger? And you don’t recognize the ring she always wears?”
If she hadn’t been putting on an act, Victoria would’ve burst out laughing.
The finger in the box was clearly a man’s, and the ring definitely wasn’t the one her new mother wore. Darell was grilling her, but it was obvious he hadn’t even looked at the finger himself before sending it over.
Playing along, Victoria put on a panicked voice. “Darell, what did you do to my mom?”
Darell let out a triumphant laugh. “Relax, it’s just a finger. No need to freak out. She’s not in any real danger.”
“Darell, what are you trying to do with my mom?” Victoria demanded, pretending to be furious, all while happily munching
on her toast.
Zoe looked terrified, about to say something, but Victoria just put a finger to her lips, signaling her to keep quiet.

“What happens to your mom is all up to you,” Darell growled, his tone full of menace.
Victoria kept up her act. “Just tell me what you want. I’ll do it, just don’t hurt my mom.”
Darell let out a cold snort. “First, you cure Simon. Then, you figure out how to wake Curtis. Do both, and your mom stays safe. But if you screw up, next time, what you get will make a finger look tame.”
He really leaned into those last words, making sure Victoria felt the threat loud and clear.
“And you’d better forget about tattling to Grandpa. If you so much as breathe a word to him, don’t blame me for what happens to your mom. If you think you’re brave enough to play games with me, go ahead, let’s see who ends up paying the price,” Darell sneered.
Before Victoria could say anything else, Darell just hung up on her, no hesitation at all.
Zoe heard everything and was totally freaked out. “Has Mr. Darell lost his mind? How could he actually go after Mrs. Binder like that!”
Victoria set her phone down and snorted. “He’s just a cornered rat. He knows if he keeps sitting around, he’ll end up nothing, so now he’s desperate enough to try anything.”

Zoe’s face was still ghostly pale, her hands twisting the hem of her apron. She asked anxiously, “So what do we do now, Miss? I noticed Madam and Sir didn’t come home all night. I just thought they were out enjoying themselves, never imagined something could go wrong…”
Victoria reassured her, “Don’t worry, Zoe. Mom’s okay, Dad’s with her, they’ll be back before you know it.”
Seeing Victoria so calm, Zoe finally felt her nerves ease. She exhaled deeply, “Alright then.”
After breakfast, Victoria got a message from Jackson.
[Vickie, I’m heading over now.]
Victoria shot back a reply.
[Sounds good! Darell just called to threaten me, so I played along and let him think he was winning. He looked so smug. I can’t wait to see his face when he finds out I totally played him.]
Jackson shot back with just three words.
[Raging but powerless.]
Victoria’s eyes lingered on Jackson’s reply.
‘Yep, that’s exactly what it is–powerless rage, Victoria thought.
Today, she was going to make Darell taste real defeat and let him stew in his own helpless fury.

At the city hospital, Angelica jumped up when she saw Simon walk into the hospital room.
“Simon, what brings you here so early? Are you here to see Curtis?” she said.
Simon glanced at Curtis, lying there unconscious in the hospital bed, and explained, “I’m taking Curtis home today.”
Angelica blinked in surprise. “Today? But Curtis still hasn’t woken up yet. Why are you taking him home all of a sudden?”

Simon explained, “Victoria says she can wake Curtis up. Dad’s got a plan to make Victoria cure me and bring Curtis back to his senses. That way, you won’t have to leave the Binder family after all, so you’ll be coming home with me later.
Curtis lay awake in bed, his heart racing as he listened to Simon speak.
‘Am I finally going to wake up?‘ Curtis wondered.
‘This is amazing!‘ he thought, barely able to contain his joy.
‘Finally, I can expose Angelica for who she really is!‘ Curtis thought, a wave of satisfaction washing over him.
“Really? That’s wonderful!” Angelica exclaimed, grabbing Simon’s arm in excitement. Then, she spotted the bruise on his forehead. Her eyes widened in worry. “Simon, what happened to your forehead?”
Simon saw the worry in Angelica’s eyes, and his heart softened. He’d never seen that kind of look from Victoria.
‘That’s the difference, Simon thought.
He’d already admitted he was wrong and promised to make it up to her, but Victoria just wouldn’t give him a chance.
Even last night, when he was suffering so much right in front of her, Victoria just ignored him and left him to suffer alone. It left him feeling utterly abandoned.
He remembered what Victoria had told him–that he’d regret giving Angelica the chance for the antidote.
He just couldn’t understand why Victoria thought he’d ever regret it.
If he ever felt any regret, it would only be because the poison was tormenting him, making life unbearable, not because he gave Angelica the chance to restore her beauty.
