But Xavier had no intention of owning up. “It was just a promise–did you really buy that? Simon, when you were running your company, did you trust anyone just because they made a promise? Don’t you know only a signed, stamped contract actually counts in court?”
He’d come back to the Thornton family estate today just to cure his sister’s poisoning. He’d planned to use Victoria’s poisoning of Faye as a chance to make Jackson look bad in front of Gerry, but things backfired, and Jackson ended up getting a windfall for nothing.
So, there was no way he was going to waste any energy worrying about Simon’s fate.
Simon was shaking with rage. Xavier was the one who broke his promise, and now he was rubbing it in Simon’s face.
But this was the Thornton family estate, and Xavier was the Thornton family’s young master. Simon could only bite back his anger and confront him, “Xavier, I betrayed my own sister again just to come here and testify for your sister! Are you really going to break your word right in front of Old Mr. Thornton himself?”
Xavier just brushed him off. “Who cares? You really think my grandpa gives a damn? Only an idiot would trust me that easily.”
Simon clenched his fists.
Victoria twisted the knife, “Simon, Xavier’s right. You really are clueless–trusting him without any leverage at all. Haven’t you learned your lesson yet? Angelica had you wrapped around her finger before, and you even handed her your chance at the antidote. If you hadn’t, you’d be free of the poison by now.”
Her words, coming from his own sister and rubbing salt in the wound, made Simon feel pain like never before. His eyes stung with tears, and his voice cracked as he said, “Victoria, you know I was just fooled by Angelica back then. Why do you have to keep holding this against me? Why can’t you just forgive me?”
‘I’ve already paid for every wrong I’ve done to you. I tried to scar your face, but you cut my Achilles tendon and now I’m a cripple. I schemed with Cassian to set you up, and the Binder family fortune is out of my hands. I’ve fallen this far–Isn’t hat enough for you?”
Victoria shot back, “No,” without a hint of emotion.
This word hit Simon like a punch, and all the fight went out of him.
Seeing him look like he’d rather be dead, Victoria couldn’t help but mock him, “If you hadn’t shown up today to testify for Faye and accuse me, maybe one day I would’ve shown you some mercy and given you the antidote. But you chose to hurt me to get what you wanted, so why would I ever pity you or forgive you?”
She was deliberately deceiving Simon.
She never intended to help him get rid of the poison–she just wanted him to wallow in regret even more.
Just then, a servant from the kitchen came in to announce that dinner was ready.
Gerry said, “Alright, anyone not involved can leave now. Butler, see them out.”
“Yes, sir,” the butler replied, stepping forward from behind Gerry and gesturing coldly at Simon. “Please leave.”
Simon cast a glance at Victoria, then, looking completely lost, slowly got up and shuffled out.
Now that the whole poisoning mess was pretty much settled, Jackson flashed a cheerful, polite smile at Xavier, who looked

like he’d just swallowed a lemon. “It’s rare for you and Faye to both come back to the old house tonight. Why not stick around for dinner and help me celebrate getting my first shares in the company?”
Xavier forced himself to stay calm. “Faye just recovered from the poisoning. I need to go tell our parents the good news, so I won’t be staying to celebrate with you, Jackson.”
“Oh, that’s such a shame,” Jackson sighed with mock regret.
Xavier was at a loss for words.
Xavier couldn’t wait to get out of there. He stood up and said to Gerry, “Grandpa, Faye and I won’t be joining you for dinner.”
Gerry waved his hand. “Go on.”
Faye stood up as well. “Grandpa, we’ll head back now.”
With that, she grabbed her bag and followed Xavier out.
Once they were out of the front hall, Faye grumbled angrily, “Xavier, what were you thinking? You really went along with Victoria’s idea to give Jackson compensation? Do you seriously think Grandpa would just let his own granddaughter suffer?”
Xavier pulled out a pack of cigarettes, took one, lit it, and held it between his lips. “Haven’t you noticed how Grandpa treats Victoria?”
Of course I noticed. Grandpa’s got so much status, but he’s so indulgent toward Victoria. I just don’t get it,” Faye said, ooking totally baffled.
Xavier blew out a puff of smoke. “Looks like you still haven’t figured it out. Grandpa’s just putting on a show for us.”
What do you mean?” Faye asked, still confused.
Xavier replied coldly, “I mean, we’ve been reading this all wrong. We thought Grandpa wanted to replace the heir, but udging by how he acted tonight, that was never his plan. He just used the whole Victoria situation as a perfect excuse to hand some shares over to Jackson early–and make it look totally legit.”
Faye’s eyes widened in disbelief. “No way. If Grandpa really wanted Jackson to stay as the Thornton family heir, why would ne say at Jackson and Victoria’s engagement party that he’d only announce the heir in three months?”
‘Whetstone,” Xavier suddenly said.
Faye looked totally lost. “What?”
Xavier said with conviction, “Grandpa wants us to be the whetstone for Jackson–so when he’s back on his feet, he’ll be sharper than ever.”
“So what are we supposed to do now?” Faye was starting to feel uncertain herself–otherwise, Grandpa’s behavior tonight just didn’t make any sense.
Honestly, in all of Benwig City’s elite circles, aside from that old lady from the Clark family, almost no one would dare show any disrespect to Grandpa.
Especially not someone from the younger generation!
But Grandpa just kept indulging Victoria.
It was clear–Grandpa still favored Jackson and saw him as the one to watch. She thought.

“Xavier, if what you’re saying is true, then what’s the point of all our hard work?” Faye’s anger gave way to frustration and unwillingness.
She couldn’t stand it–her family was stuck running the Afriska business, and no matter how successful they were, they’d always be nothing more than Jackson’s backdrop.
Xavier didn’t say a word.
Faye saw how upset he was and decided to keep quiet, letting the matter drop for now.
It wasn’t until they’d left the Thornton family estate and gotten into the car that Xavier finally spoke, his voice cold as ice. “I’ve made up my mind–I’m going to claim the heir spot in the Thornton family, and I’ll do whatever it takes to make it
mine.”
He could never forget how, back when he went to Afriska with his father for so–called ‘training, the other rich kids would snicker behind his back.
‘Don’t be fooled by Xavier acting all tough around us. He’s just Jackson’s stepping stone. Just like his dad, he’s getting shipped off to Afriska–sure, they call it ‘training, but everyone knows it’s just exile!”
Why, when he was just as much a Thornton as anyone else, did I have to be banished to Afriska?‘ He thought.
le refused to accept this as his destiny.
And he vowed he’d be the one running the show in Benwig City’s elite circles.
When he found out Grandpa was about to name Jackson as the heir, he’d already thought about hiring someone in Afriska
o take Jackson out. He just never expected Jackson’s brother, Cassian, to beat him to it.
ackson didn’t die, but he lost the use of his legs. Xavier figured his chance had finally come.
There’s no way Grandpa would still hand the Thornton family over to a grandson who can’t even walk, right?‘ Xavier hought.
Sure enough, Gerry put off announcing the heir.
Kavier thought he finally had a shot, but tonight he realized that Gerry never truly intended to let go of Jackson.
If he couldn’t beat them from within, then he’d just turn to outside help.
And when it came to outside help, the Clark family was obviously the best choice.
Xavier stubbed out his cigarette. If he couldn’t have it, he’d rather burn it all to the ground.
Even if the Thornton family collapsed in China, his empire in Afriska would never fall.
