She rubbed her nose. “Yeah, I remember. I didn’t think you’d act so quickly. I said we’d only consider getting together after my birthday party.

“You just found your brother, and now Xavier and the others are using Donald as leverage. A lot is going on right now.”

Jackson shrugged. “Fast? Not at all, Vickie. When it comes to you, I always make it a priority.”

Victoria was totally charmed by Jackson’s blunt honesty. She laughed, “Alright, so what did your friends say?”

Jackson grinned. “They all said they’re dying to hang out with you in private now that you’re kind of a big deal.”

Victoria blinked and asked, “Wait, did your friends show up at our engagement party?”

Jackson chuckled. “Yeah, they were there. But you were the star of the night, so you probably didn’t notice them. It’s cool though. They totally get it.”

Victoria felt a bit awkward. “Oh, got it. Next time at my birthday party, I’ll make sure to hang out with your buddies. I don’t want them feeling left out.”

“So, what about your friends, Vickie?” Jackson suddenly asked.

“What, you want me to bring my friends, too? Are you trying to turn this into a matchmaking dinner?” Victoria teased.

Jackson laughed. “Of course not, I’m curious. I’ve never met any of your friends.”

Victoria paused and then admitted, “Honestly, I don’t have any real friends.”

She wondered, ‘Is Mara really a friend?

‘Mara is fiercely loyal, but she always sees me as her leader, never as someone on the same level.

‘Is Oliver a friend?

‘No, he was someone I used to know as a kid, kind of like an older brother figure.

‘If I had to name any friends, it would be Greenie, Whitey, and Blackie.‘

Thinking of that, Victoria turned to glance at Greenie and Whitey, who were sleeping peacefully at the head of her bed.

The two little ones were sleeping soundly, relaxed.

Victoria explained, “I grew up surrounded by poisonous insects and snakes. Aside from the adults in the village, most kids my age were too scared to hang out with me.

“They treated me with more fear and respect than actual friendship. But I never felt lonely because I didn’t have friends.

“There was always so much I wanted to learn, and I barely had time for socializing.”

That was also why Gavin felt like his efforts were never acknowledged, and why he always felt overlooked in their relationship.

Honestly, if it weren’t for helping Jackson with his leg treatment, Victoria probably wouldn’t have had much time to spend with him, either.

So even though she’d been back in Benwig City with the Binder family for two or three months, she hadn’t gone on a real date with Jackson, let alone hung out with his friends.

The last time she brought up Jackson’s friends, it was a passing joke. She never thought Jackson would be so quick to tell her his friends wanted to meet up for dinner.

Victoria was a little taken aback by Jackson’s words. “Really?”

Come to think of it, Annie did like chatting with her.

Even though Victoria’s replies were never quick or enthusiastic, and she never initiated the conversation, Annie still messaged her almost every day, sharing all sorts of interesting things.

Thinking about it, Victoria said, “Alright, after I meet your friends, I’ll try to introduce you to some folks I’m pretty close with.”

“Sounds good,” Jackson grinned.

After ending the video call with Jackson, Victoria opened up her chat with Annie.

Annie had sent her a bunch of messages today.
