Victoria didn’t even bother opening the list Beatrice had sent. She replied right away: [At the end of the month, arrange a small meet–and–greet for me.

[Invite all the entertainment companies interested in my final novel. Make sure their bosses show up in person. Tell them I want to choose the partner myself.]

Since Simon needed results at Brightstar Entertainment right now, there was no way he’d miss this. He would definitely show up himself.

And when he found out the rights he wanted were in her hands, that would be interesting.

Victoria’s lips curved slightly. That reaction would be worth seeing.

Beatrice replied almost instantly: [Alright. Only you could pull something like this off.

[Your first three works all became huge hits after adaptation. This last one is even more valuable. Are you planning to write anything new?]

Victoria: [No plans for now.]

Beatrice: [That’s fine. Quality over quantity. These four books alone are enough to keep you set for life. I’ll arrange the event as soon as possible. Just wait for my update.]

After chatting a bit more about everyday things, Victoria closed the conversation, shut down her laptop, and picked up her phone before lying back on the bed.

She opened Jackson’s message from ten minutes ago and replied: [Taking your medicine needs a daily reminder from me? 1 think you just want an excuse to talk to me every day.]

The reply came almost instantly. [Yeah. You figured me out again.]

Victoria smiled faintly. [Have you really never treated any other woman like this?]

Jackson answered without hesitation: [You’re underestimating both yourself and me. Did I ever have to take the initiative with who I was before?]

Victoria typed back: [Whatever. We already have a marriage arrangement. You don’t have to go out of your way to keep the conversation going every day.]

Jackson: [It’s different. For you, I’ll never run out of things to say.]

Victoria: [I have a very good reason to suspect Simon’s right. Maybe you’re only being nice to me because you want something from me.j

Jackson: [He said that? How about you bring him over tomorrow and have him say it to my face?]

Victoria laughed out loud when she read that. [Deal.]

They kept chatting like that, back and forth, until at some point, she drifted off to sleep without even realizing it

When Victoria woke up, it was already morning. The phone she’d left beside her pillow last night had been neatly placed back on the nightstand. She didn’t need to guess; it had to be Greenie.

As soon as it saw she was awake, Greenie slithered up onto the nightstand and nudged the phone toward her.

“Good boy.” Victoria sat up, patted its head, and picked up her phone.

As expected, there was a message from Jackson. [There’s a welcome party tonight. Should we start treatment earlier?]

She checked the time. It was just past eight. [Okay. Ten o’clock. Same place.]

After sending the reply, she fed the little snakes their usual dried spiders, washed up, and headed downstairs for breakfast.

Daisy and Hector weren’t home. Victoria asked Zoe where they had gone.

Zoe smiled. “They went to check the venue again first thing this morning. They’re worried that they might have overlooked something for your welcome party tonight. They really care about you.”

Then she added, “Are you heading out today? Mrs. Daisy Binder said if you do, you should bring two bodyguards from the house. Just in case.”

Victoria nodded. “Got it.”

While she was eating, Jackson replied: [Alright. I’ll wait for you there.]

Victoria paused for a moment, then picked up her phone and called Simon.

Simon hadn’t slept all night. The pain in his right leg kept reminding him that he had lost its use.

He didn’t know how he was supposed to face the future or his family.

Just then, the thing he dreaded most happened. A knock sounded at the door.

“Simon, are you awake?” Angelica’s voice came from outside.

He said nothing. He wasn’t ready to explain his condition to anyone.

‘Simon, Dad asked if you’re not going to the office today,” Angelica called out again.

Simon glanced at the dozen missed calls from his assistant but still didn’t respond.

The hallway fell quiet. He lowered his head, clutching it as he curled up slightly, the pain and frustration pressing in on him.

Just then, his phone rang again.

Annoyed, he was about to hang up until he saw Victoria’s name on the screen.

His hand froze. He didn’t dare reject her call. After a moment, he picked up.

Victoria’s bright voice came through. “Come find me later. We’re going out. Jackson wants to talk to you

Simon frowned. “About what?”

Victoria replied, “Did you forget what you said? You told me he’s only being nice because he wants something from ine and thinks I can cure his legs.”

Simon’s jaw tightened. After a long pause, he forced his voice steady. “Why would you tell him that?”

Victoria sounded completely unconcerned. “Why not? You’re just a tool for us to build our relationship.”

Her words hit him like a slap. But he had no choice. He couldn’t fight back.

He took a breath. “I understand.”

Ten minutes later, Simon limped downstairs.

Angelica immediately rushed over. “Simon, is your leg any better?”

Julia looked at him anxiously. “Simon, be honest with me. What’s wrong with your leg? Is it because of Victoria—”

“Mom, stop asking.” Simon cut her off coldly. “I’ll explain when the time comes. Just don’t bother me right now, okay?”

Julia rodded quickly. “Alright. I won’t ask.”

Angelica knew better than to push him further. She kept quiet.

Seeing that he was heading out without eating, Julia called after him, “Simon, at least have breakfast before you go to the office.”

‘No need.” He didn’t even turn back as he limped out.

Julia felt uneasy no matter how she thought about it. She turned to Angelica. “Go see him later. Try to get him to tell you what really happened. He’s always been soft on you. He might open up.”

Angelica nodded. “Okay. I’ll go to Brightstar Entertainment later.”

But deep down, she knew asking him about it now would only make things worse.

Simon made his way to the entrance of Goldenwood Villa with difficulty, then called Victoria. “I’m here.”

Wait outside.” Victoria said.

How long?” Simon asked, irritation creeping into his voice.

Just wait. Do I need to report my schedule to you?” Victoria sounded impatient.

Simon clenched his teeth. “Got it.”

After hanging up, he stood under a tree for shade.
