“Dad, you saw that, didn’t you? Jackson doesn’t even respect you anymore. His legs are crippled, so what gives him the right to be so arrogant?” Sibley said.

She covered her swollen cheeks and dropped back onto the sofa, her eyes burning with resentment.

Cassian had someone bring ice packs and gently helped her press them against her face.

“Because your grandfather still values him more,” Donald said coldly. “As he said, Cassian’s been back for three years, and your grandfather still hasn’t played a single game of chess with him.”

Everyone in the Thornton family knew how much Gerry loved chess. If he invited a younger member to play with him, it mean: approval. It meant recognition.

Cassian’s eyes darkened with frustration. “Dad, don’t worry. Grandpa will come around eventually. He still favors Jackson now, but he hasn’t officially named the heir yet, has he?

“That means he’s already hesitating. He’s just holding onto hope, thinking Jackson’s legs might still be cured.”

Sibley frowned. “But what if they really can be cured?”

Donald’s gaze turned cold and sharp. “Even if they can, I won’t let that happen.”

Every doctor who had examined or treated Jackson had been chosen by him. If there was even a chance of recovery, Donald had more than enough ways to make sure it never succeeded.

He turned to Sibley, his tone softening. “Sibley, I failed you today. I didn’t stand up for you and let you be humiliated again.”

Sibley shook her head, her voice gentle. “Dad, my humiliation isn’t the real issue. What matters is that he doesn’t even respect you anymore. He even said your standing in the family comes entirely from him.”

At those words, Donald’s fists tightened. He thought Jackson had exactly the same temperament as his mother.

If both of them looked down on him like this, then he wouldn’t be blamed for being ruthless.

He had gotten rid of that woman back then. He believed he could get rid of her son as well.

“Cassian, did you look into the Binder family’s real daughter?” Donald asked, his expression serious.

Cassian nodded. “I did. She was brought back from a remote village, a village doctor who sold herbs.

“Her name is Victoria. From what I heard, the Darell side didn’t accept her at all. Now she’s been taken in by Hector and Daisy.”

Hearing that, Donald relaxed slightly. “Good. As long as she’s nothing more than a useless country girl, that’s enough.

“If Jackson marries her, it will affect his standing in the family. We can use that to strengthen our position.”

Sibley let out a cold laugh. “The Binder family clearly doesn’t want Angelica to marry him anymore. They’re just tossing him some nobody from nowhere to brush him off. I don’t know what he’s still so proud of.”

Then her eyes lit up, and a malicious smile spread across her face. “Cassian, what if you married Angelica instead? Wouldn’t that drive Jackson crazy? He’d become the biggest joke in all of Benwig City”

He was already thinking about how to win Angelica over.

In Gerry’s private study, Jackson placed a chess piece calmly on the board.

Across from him, Gerry looked up. “Your father told you about the Binder family, didn’t he?”

Jackson didn’t lift his head. “He did.”

What’s your plan?” Gerry asked.

‘The engagement stands. I’ll marry the Binder family’s real daughter.”

Gerry’s hand paused midair, the chess piece still between his fingers. “Do you understand your situation right now? And you still want to marry a woman with no background, huh?

‘Ever since your legs were injured, people have been pushing me to replace you as heir.”

Jackson remained calm. “Grandpa, are you really planning to replace me? Other than me, who else has the ability to take the Thornton family further and keep it standing strong in Benwig City?”

Gerry let out a snort. “You’re certainly confident.”

ackson placed another piece on the board, a faint smile on his lips. “I’m just as confident in my judgment when it comes to :hoosing a wife.”

You’ve only known her for a short time. How can you be so sure?”

One look was enough.”

Gerry studied him thoughtfully. “When I arranged your engagement with Angelica, that talented and well–known girl, you showed no reaction at all.

‘I never knew if you liked that match or not. But now, you’re taking the initiative with this one.”

Jackson smiled lightly. “I almost died once. It changes how you see things. Sometimes, it’s better to follow your heart.”

Gerry snorted again and said, “Fine. I’ll go to the welcome party tomorrow night myself. I want to see what’s so special about this girl that made you decide so quickly.”

When he thought of Victoria’s bold and fearless nature, Jackson’s smile deepened slightly. “Grandpa, I think you’ll be very satisfied with your future granddaughter–in–law.”

That only made Gerry more curious. Jackson had always been polite, gentle, and easy to get along with. But in truth, very few people ever got close to him, let alone earned his approval.

To him, his engagement to Angelica had been nothing more than a formality.

He picked up his phone, planning to message Victoria and ask what she was doing.

At her desk. Victoria had just sent the message before logging into her writer account as Viara. She planned to talk to her editor about selling the rights to her final novel.

The moment she logged in, her screen was flooded with messages from fans, industry people, and entertainment companies, all trying to connect with her.

She clicked into the friend requests and, sure enough, saw one from Brightstar Entertainment.

She let out a soft laugh and rejected it without hesitation.

Then she opened the messages from her editor, Beatrice. [Viara, a lot of entertainment companies want the rights to your last novel. Prices are negotiable. I’ve made a list and sent it to you.
