Victoria found herself thinking back to the day Jackson first came to the village looking for her.
Now she finally understood why he was set to become the heir of the Thornton family, the wealthiest family in Benwig City. His instincts were razor–sharp.
The house she used to live in had been falling apart. No one would’ve guessed that the herbs hanging on the walls were worth anything. But Jackson had spotted them in a single glance.
And the fact that he could recognize them meant he’d seen the world. He must’ve spent plenty of time at Benwig City’s largest auction house and remembered those rare medicinal herbs that had once been sold there.
“I see,” Victoria said quietly, finally putting it all together.
Jackson looked at her. “Darell and his family turning you away for Angelica’s sake? That’s their loss.”
Victoria took out her tools and began treating him. “They knew a long time ago that Angelica was switched. But they never once thought about bringing me back. From the moment I found out, they became unforgivable to me.”
Her face remained steady as she worked around his knees. “This time, I went back to the Binder family for one reason–to take everything they have now. I want them to pay for what they did.”
Then she glanced up at him. “What about you? A lot of people out there think you won’t be able to hold onto your position as heir.”
Jackson smiled, easy and unbothered. “Let them think whatever they want. It’s a good chance for me to see people for who they really are and deal with them all at once.”
Victoria smiled faintly. “Then I guess I should wish us both good luck.”
After leaving the pavilion, Simon returned his secretary’s call.
The moment the line connected, an anxious woman’s voice came through. “Mr. Binder, why haven’t you been answering? I was so worried. I thought something happened to you. I was about to go to your house.”
Simon’s tone was flat. “Tracy, call a car. Come pick me up. I’ll send you my location.”
“Okay. I’ll be there right away,” Tracy said.
An hour later, Tracy stepped out of the car. The moment she saw Simon leaning on a cane, her eyes went wide. “Mr. Binder, what happened to your leg?”
Simon’s expression turned cold. “Don’t ask questions you shouldn’t ask.”
The chill in his voice made her swallow the rest of her words. She hurried over and helped him into the back seat without another sound.
After closing the door, Tracy couldn’t help sneaking a glance at his right leg.
Simon noticed. His face darkened. “What’s going on at the company? Why were you calling me so many times?”
Tracy snapped back to attention. “Marty from the business department wanted to report to you this morning. Viara’s editor got back to us.

“Viara is hosting a small meet–and–greet at the end of the month here in Benwig City. She’ll decide on the spot which company gets the rights to her final novel. She asked the most senior person in charge to attend in person.”
Simon frowned slightly. He thought Viara was clearly relying on her current fame to make bold demands.
But she had every right to. The value of her final novel was beyond measure for entertainment companies like theirs.
“Do we have the exact time and place yet?” he asked.
“Marty said he’s still waiting on a formal invitation from the website,” Tracy replied.
“Fine. Tell him to keep following up. I’ll attend the meet–and–greet with him,” Simon said.
“Understood.” Tracy nodded.
Simon knew exactly what Viara was doing. She wanted to see which company was the most sincere. And nothing showed sincerity more than the boss showing up in person.
His right leg was crippled, and poison was still running through his body.
If the company didn’t deliver something big soon, he might end up just like Jackson in the Thornton family, stripped of his authority over Brightstar Entertainment by Calvin.
He had to secure the rights to Viara’s final novel. That was the only way to prove himself.
The treatment wrapped up around one in the afternoon.
Victoria finished the final step and looked at Jackson, whose face had gone pale. “That’s it for today. Go back and get some rest.”
“It’s already noon,” Jackson said as he rolled his pant leg back down. His eyes stayed on her, steady and calm, as if the pain from earlier had never happened. “How about we grab lunch first?”
Victoria was just about to answer when her phone rang. She glanced at the screen. It was an unfamiliar number.
She packed away her tools before picking up. Gavin’s voice came through right away. “Victoria, where are you?”
She didn’t hesitate. “Almost at the train station.”
“Okay. Wait there. I’ll come pick you up,” Gavin said,
“Alright.” She hung up and slipped her phone back into her pocket.
Jackson looked at her, a hint of curiosity in his eyes.
“My ex–boyfriend,” Victoria said.
Jackson raised a brow. “You’re still in touch with him, huh?”
“I’ve already blocked a bunch of his numbers,” she said with a small shrug. “But he keeps finding ways to contact me.
“He says he wants to give us a chance and support me. So, I figured I’d mess with him a little and make him give up.”
Jackson shook his head slightly. “That might not work. Otherwise, why would he keep coming after you after he went back to

the Fairbank family and became a rich heir?”
Victoria almost laughed. “Don’t tell me you think he’s in love with me and just can’t let go.”

“Of course he is.” Jackson said simply. “If he didn’t have real feelings, why would he keep chasing you after gaining status? As a man, if it’s not genuine, no one would go that far and embarrass themselves.”
That only made Victoria want to laugh more. “Come on. He dumped me right after his family took him back. If that’s love, then it’s worth next to nothing.”
Jackson didn’t argue. “He likes you, but he also cares about the pride and status that came with his new identity.
“When he first suggested breaking up, he probably just wanted to take control of the relationship. If I had to guess, when you were together, he was always the one putting in more effort.”
Victoria paused. When she thought about it, she realized Jackson was right.
She had saved Gavin’s life. After that, he’d insisted on chasing after her. Back then, Gavin had nothing. But he tried. everything–flowers, jewelry, handbags….
However, all of it cost way more than he could afford. So Victoria never accepted any of it.

Even so, every day after work, he would ride his beat–up electric scooter all the way to the village just to see her. He cooked for her, cleaned, and helped her sort herbs. Rain or shine, he never missed a day.
Day after day, his persistence slowly wore her down. Two months ago, she’d finally been moved enough to say yes.
But something felt off. Just a few days after they started dating, Gavin’s enthusiasm faded. The most obvious change was that he stopped coming to see her every single day. He wasn’t as proactive anymore.
Sometimes, he wouldn’t show up, but he would still call to check on her.
Victoria suddenly remembered. The week before he broke up with her, during a late–night call, he had asked out of nowhere, “Victoria, do you think I’m not good enough for you?”
