At the time, Victoria only thought Gavin’s question sounded a little odd. She didn’t take it seriously. She just said, Why would you ask that? I’ve never thought that way.”

Gavin went quiet for a moment, then hung up.

For the next week, he didn’t come to see her. He didn’t call either.

Victoria happened to be busy working on a new medicine, so she didn’t have the time or energy to think about him.

Then, the day Jackson came to find her, Gavin finally called again. The first thing he said was that he wanted to break up.

Now, thinking back, Victoria couldn’t help wondering if Jackson was right. Maybe the breakup had something to do with her not being active enough in the relationship.

Jackson noticed her frown and gave a small smile. Don’t think too much about it. That’s just my guess. No matter what, you two are over now. And I’m your fiancé.

Whatever.Victoria waved it off. He’s the one who wanted to break up. No matter what his reason was, it doesn’t change the fact that he’s a jerk.”

She had no interest in digging into Gavin’s reasons or thinking about that humiliating message he sent after the breakup about keeping her as a mistress.

Jackson could tell she was completely over Gavin and smiled. Okay.

He hadn’t said those things to defend Gavin. He just didn’t want Victoria to soften later, not if she found out Gavin still had feelings for her. He didn’t want her holding onto anything from the past.

From now on, he wanted her heart to belong to him alone.

So, how about lunch?Jackson asked again.

Victoria pressed a hand to her stomach and nodded. Yeah. Let’s go eat.”

As she spoke, she moved behind him and pushed his wheelchair herself.

Ollie, who had been waiting nearby, saw them coming and hurried over.

Miss Binder, let me handle that. His tone was respectful. You’ve been working for three hours. Please, have some water and a snack first. He handed her the water and the snacks he’d prepared earlier.

After spending so much time around Jackson, Ollie could tell this time was different. Jackson was serious about Victoria. Otherwise, he wouldn’t bother with something as small as preparing snacks for her.

Victoria didn’t argue. She let go of the wheelchair, took the snack bag, and stepped aside. Then she opened it and happily started eating a box of cookies.

Jackson watched her out of the corner of his eye. Early autumn sunlight filtered through the leaves, falling across her face in soft patches.

Her cheeks puffed slightly as she chewed, and beneath her usual boldness, there was a hint of softness, almost childlike.

It was such a simple moment. But to him, it felt rare and precious.

And with every passing second, his resolve grew stronger. He was going to make her his wife.

Jackson took Victoria to a nearby restaurant. According to him, the place belonged to him. It was more of a private kitchen for hosting guests, not somewhere meant to make money.

After living in the village for years, Victoria could tell right away that everything on the table was made from clean, natural ingredients.

Jackson watched her eat with clear enjoyment and smiled. If you like it, I can bring you here often. They change the menu all the time, so you won’t get bored.”

Victoria nodded. Okay. Then we can come here to celebrate holidays and anniversaries.”

Jackson raised an eyebrow, a hint of teasing in his eyes. What kind of anniversaries?

Victoria set down her fork and started counting on her fingers. The day we met. Our engagement day. And our wedding anniversary in the future.

Jackson’s eyes lit up with quiet amusement. Alright.

Right then, Victoria’s phone rang again. It was the same unknown number.

Jackson caught the shift in her expression and immediately guessed who it was. If you want to settle this for good, want me to answer it?

Victoria thought for a second, then nodded and handed him the phone.

Jackson took it and answered.

Victoria, I’m at the train station. Where are you? Why don’t I see you?Gavin’s voice came through.

She’s having lunch with me,Jackson said calmly.

There was a short silence. Then Gavin spoke again, anger clear in his voice. Who are you? Why are you answering her phone? Put her on.

I’m her fiancé, Jackson said. I’ve heard you’ve been bothering her since the breakup. I’m answering to make things clear. From now on, stay away from my fiancée.

She just broke up with me. How long has it even been? And now she has a fiancé, huh? You think I’d believe that?Gavin’s voice grew sharper. Let her talk.

If you don’t believe me, we’ll send you a wedding invitation when the time comes,Jackson replied, his tone still even.

I said let her answer!Gavin shouted.

You broke up. That should’ve been the end of it.Jackson ended the call and handed the phone back. It doesn’t sound like he plans to stop.

His guess had been right. Gavin’s feelings for Victoria were real. The breakup hadn’t come from looking down on her after gaining status. It came from pride.

Gavin wanted control. He wanted to turn things around and make Victoria the one chasing him.

Unfortunately, it backfired, and no matter how much he regretted it, it was too late.

Victoria was Jackson’s fiancée. And Jackson wasn’t about to let anyone take her away.

I don’t care whether he stops or not,Victoria said.

Right then, the same number called again.

This time, she decided to end it properly. She picked up. Gavin, stop calling me. We’ve already broken up.”

There was a long silence on the other end. When he finally spoke, Gavin’s voice had changed. The arrogance was gone. There was something close to pleading now.

He said, Victoria, I was wrong. I shouldn’t have said those things. I never really wanted to break up. I just felt like you didn’t care about me. I thought if I broke up with you, you’d realize how much you’d miss me.”

Victoria didn’t know whether to laugh or get angry. How old are you? Where did you even come up with something that stupic? You broke up with me, said I wasn’t good enough for you, and then offered to keep me as your mistress, huh?

I messed up. I really did.His voice sounded tight, like he was holding back tears. I don’t even know what I was thinking.

I just thought maybe if I did that, you’d start valuing me. I just don’t want you to see me as someone who only lives for you.

Victoria paused. For a second, she understood why his attitude had changed so much.

But that didn’t mean anything anymore. She lowered her gaze, her voice calm. Gavin, we’ve known each other for two years. You should know what I’m like.

I know.He let out a shaky breath. I got ahead of myself. I thought I could compete with you, like I had the upper hand.

But Victoria, can’t you give me one more chance? Don’t you have any feelings for me at all? Do you really have to shut me out completely?

Victoria, I really am the heir to the Fairbank family, one of the richest families in Benwig City. Everything I said before- about breaking up, about keeping you as a mistresswas all nonsense.

I’ll marry you. I’ll give you a big wedding. I can give you a good life from now on-
