Chapter 411
Curtis felt a pang of bitterness as he listened to Victoria. He understood her point, but the fact remained that his mother had
been saved
After a brief silence, Curtis spoke up, his voice low. “I know, but you did save my mom. That’s the truth.”
His words lingered in the air for a moment, and then, as if he’d finally made up his mind, he said, “Guess I’ll say goodbye ahead of time… Goodbye. Maybe you’d prefer if we never crossed paths again.”
Victoria replied without hesitation. “That’s right”
Curtis gave a bitter smile and turned to leave. His steps were heavy, like he was carrying the weight of the world.
Victoria’s eyes followed him until his silhouette vanished from sight, and only then did she finally look away.
Her gaze drifted back to the computer screen, and Victoria couldn’t help but wonder, ‘What would it feel like to have two brothers of my own? Too bad; she knew she’d never get to experience that herself.

After leaving Brightstar Entertainment, Curtis made his way to Gale Entertainment, intending to discuss his contract termination with Marty, the very person who had recruited him.
As luck would have it, he ran into Marty just as he was coming out of the HR department. “Mr. Howell, there’s something I need to discuss with you…” Curtis said.
“Don’t bother coming to me for anything anymore. I’ve been let go,” Marty said, catching Curtis’s shocked look.
“You know, when I pitched you to Mr. Lowe, it was because I thought you had real talent and could bring Gale Entertainment some serious cash.
“But who could’ve guessed you’d get totally wrecked by Victoria in that showdown, and then all that drama with Timothy blew up; Gale’s stock nosedived! Now Mr. Lowe’s pissed off.
“He promised us double pay for jumping ship from Brightstar Entertainment, but now he’s pulling the plug and firing every single one of us who came over from Brightstar!”
Curtis was stunned. “All of us?”
Marty nodded. “Yeah, every last one! Since we’re still on probation, we don’t even get a dime in severance!”
Then he started cursing. “Man, this freaking sucks! If I’d known, I never would’ve left Brightstar. I’d be living it up with Victoria right now!”
Curtis felt even more bitter inside. he couldn’t help but agree; Marty’s words echoed exactly how he felt right now.
Just then, a noisy commotion erupted from the HR department behind Marty; all the employees who’d jumped ship from Brightstar Entertainment were protesting.
“Isn’t this going too far, Gale Entertainment? You’re just using us and tossing us aside! You promised us double pay to get us to switch over, and now you’re just firing us just like that!”
“Yeah, I’ve still got all those emails you sent me!”
Hearing this, Marty scoffed. “What’s the point of protesting? We haven’t even signed a real contract yet, we’re still on our

three-month probation.
“Who would’ve thought, right? Gale Entertainment is the oldest entertainment company in the city, backed by the C family. No way it could ever go under.
“Even if we didn’t get double pay, as long as things were better than at Brightstar, that’d be enough. But look at us DOW
He added, “Whatever. If things keep going like this, Gale Entertainment’s bound to go under sooner or later, Sticking arou here is pointless.”
After he finished ranting, Marty finally turned to Curtis. “So, what did you want to talk about?
Curtis said. “I was gonna talk to you about ending my contract.”
Marty scoffed. “Just go talk to Mr. Lowe yourself. He’ll probably be thrilled if you want out now. Cash is way more useful to him than keeping you on the payroll.” He paused, looking confused. “But how are you gonna pay the penalty?”
Curtis explained, “There’s a company overseas that wants to sign me. They’ll pay the penalty for me.”
Marty scoffed again. “You’ve got some real talent, and luck’s on your side, getting a shot overseas. Me? Everyone in the business knows I bailed on my old company, so no one wants to hire me now.”
He continued, “Looking at it, we’re both in the same boat, just trying to get by. You could’ve had an awesome sister; if nothing had gone wrong, she might’ve written a bunch of songs for you and helped you blow up in the music scene.
“And me? After your brother Simon got kicked out and Victoria took over, if I’d just kept my cool and stayed put, maybe I could’ve taken my career to the next level. Too bad, huh?”
“Good luck to you.” With that, Marty let out a sigh and left.
Before long, the other employees who’d jumped ship from Brightstar Entertainment started trickling out of the HR department, their faces a mix of anger and regret as they left, clearly unwilling to accept their fate.
“Man, if I’d known, I never would’ve switched companies. Just imagine how sweet things would be right now.”
“Yeah, I tried to talk my coworker into jumping ship with me, but she just told me her salary went up, and she’s getting a huge bonus at the end of the year.”
“Brightstar Entertainment’s stock is through the roof right now! I’m tempted to buy some myself. If it keeps going up, I could totally survive unemployment just off the stock gains!”
When they spotted Curtis standing not far from the entrance, the employees froze, instantly shutting up and giving him weird looks. Once they’d walked past Curtis, they started whispering among themselves again.
“Honestly, no matter how bad things get for us, we’re still not as miserable as Curtis.”
“For real. He used to be rich, and now he’s been kicked out of his family. Word is, his dad even got thrown in jail.”
“They had a money tree right within reach, but his whole family pushed it away. Who else can they blame for ending up like this?”
Curtis heard it all, and his heart twisted in agony. The pain was overwhelming, almost unbearable.
Even though he’d pretended to be okay when he went to Brightstar Entertainment to see Victoria, hearing all this gossip now made the pain come rushing back.
Curtis regretted not going with Simon and their parents to pick Victoria up from the village back then, and he also regretted

tampering with her brakes in a moment of madness that had nearly killed her.
Why is it that life never gives us any do-overs?’ Curtis thought bitterly.
Curtis didn’t let himself wallow in sadness for long. After shaking off the gloom, he headed straight for Justin’s office Just as he was about to knock, he heard Justin’s heartfelt voice coming from the slightly ajar door.
“Kevin, Larry, everything rides on you two for Rising to the Top! I’m really counting on you, don’t let me down? Justin said
Something stirred inside Curtis. He hesitated for a moment, then quietly pulled his hand away from the door. Inside, Justic was sitting behind his spacious desk, with Kevin and Larry sitting across from him.
“Mr. Lowe, I’ll do my best, but honestly, the way people are talking about Gale Entertainment right now, it’s really not looking good,” Kevin said, frowning with frustration.
Justin showed he understood Kevin’s worries, but he quickly said, “Kevin, this is your shot to show everyone you’re a cut above Frank!”
Kevin fell silent for a moment, then slowly turned to Larry, as if seeking his opinion or hoping for some reassurance
Larry noticed and gave a confident smile. “I’ve been in this industry for years, and I’ve made it this far by never giving up halfway. Mr. Stone, don’t worry, with me in the cast, Rising to the Top won’t lose to Chasing the Dream.”
