Gerry didn’t answer.

Donald was about to say something else, but when he met Xavier’s fierce glare, he immediately shut up.
Xavier had already taken him out of the care facility and sent him abroad. So he wondered how he suddenly ended up back in the country, sitting in Gerry’s car.
Xavier clenched his fists tightly. Same as Donald, he woke up and found himself in Gerry’s car.
Aside from him, Felix was there too, along with Donald, Jackson’s father, whom Xavier had already sent abroad.
Suddenly, it dawned on him. ‘Jackson had played all three of us!”
Felix was the first to catch on to the setup. He knew Jackson had played him, but he had no clue what Gary had in mind for Gerry.
His gut told him Gary had probably messed with the car.
Maybe the brakes were shot, maybe there was a bomb hidden somewhere, or maybe something even worse.
One thing was for sure, riding in the same car as Gerry was a disaster waiting to happen.
Felix steadied himself and asked, “Grandpa Gerry, what’s really going on?”
Gerry finally spoke. “I have no idea either. This morning before we left, Jackson had people drag you into the car. He said something big was going to happen, that I might be in danger, and I’d be safe if you were all with
me.”
Felix wasn’t convinced. ‘Does Grandpa really have no clue, or is he just pretending?
‘Is he teaming up with Jackson, putting on a show to make us confess we want Gary to get revenge on him?”
If this was all just an act, there was no way Gerry would actually put himself in harm’s way.
But if it wasn’t an act, and Felix didn’t stop Gary’s plan, he’d go down with Gerry for sure.
Xavier was just as uneasy.
Last night, when he heard that Gary had insisted Gerry personally pick up Jackson, Xavier immediately figured Gary was planning to tamper with the car.
As long as Gary’s plan worked, that would be perfect. If it didn’t, Xavier had already bribed someone to crash a big truck into them and stage an accident.
He wanted Gerry to die today. Otherwise, at the family meeting in a week, he’d lose any shot at becoming the Thornton family heir.

But now, he was stuck in the same car as Gerry. If the guy he paid off really rammed them with that big rig, he’d go down with Gerry too.
Just then, the butler went white as a sheet and shouted in panic, “Sir, this is bad! The brakes are failing!” His words struck like lightning, and the tension in the car skyrocketed.
Felix and Xavier froze, their expressions hardening.
Donald was the first to snap out of it. He roared, “Are you kidding me? How can the brakes just fail like that? Didn’t you check the car before we left?”
Faced with Donald’s furious questioning, the butler broke out in a cold sweat. He frantically stomped on the brake pedal, panic in his voice as he explained, “We checked it yesterday! I swear, I don’t know what happened. Just now, the brakes suddenly stopped working!”
But no matter how desperately he tried, the car kept hurtling forward like a wild stallion, showing no sign of stopping.
Donald’s heart was pounding so hard it felt like it might leap out of his throat. He gripped the safety strap for life, his voice trembling as he turned to Gerry. “Dad, are the brakes really not working? What are we supposed to do now?”
Gerry stayed calm and ordered, “Contact the escort vehicles. Have them block us and force us to stop!”
Donald snapped out of it. ‘Right, there are eight cars in front and behind us. If they block us, they can force this car to stop.‘
But the butler, steering with one hand and grabbing the walkie–talkie with the other, blurted out, “Sir, the comms are down. I can’t get through to any of the other drivers.”
Donald was on the verge of freaking out. “Dad, since when did our security get so careless?”
He pushed, his voice desperate, “Don’t tell me the phones are dead too! Dad, I don’t have mine. Just call Jackson and get him to fix this, or we’re all toast!”
Gerry checked his pockets, his expression turning grim. “I don’t have my phone.”
Donald nearly lost it. “Seriously? Who forgets their phone nowadays?”
Felix was starting to think Gerry was deliberately playing them.
He glanced at the speedometer. They were going less than 70 mph. If they really crashed, they might actually
survive.
But he had no clue if Xavier had something else up his sleeve to make sure Gary’s plan went smoothly.
Just then, Donald shouted, “Crap, red light! The escort cars are slowing down! Swerve, quick!”
The butler, desperate to avoid rear–ending the car in front, yanked the wheel and swerved into the right–turn lane, blowing through the red light.

But because they’d run the red, they had to dodge other cars, and with no way to slow down, they had no choice but to speed up. The car shot up to nearly 100 mph.
That was way beyond any safe speed.
As the escort cars shrank into the distance, Xavier’s pulse hammered in his ears.
He noticed a car lurking not far behind them, clearly stalking their every move, just waiting to slam into them at any second.
‘This can’t go on, Xavier thought, panic clawing at him. ‘If it does, we’re all going to die in this car!‘
“Dad, you have to think of something! If this keeps up, we’re all gonna die!” Donald’s voice was shaking with fear and desperation. He watched as their car sped on without slowing down for a second, his heart about to burst out of his chest.
Gerry replied in a low, tense voice, “What am I supposed to do? The comms just went out of nowhere, and the brakes have been messed with!”
At that moment, a car sped up from behind and quickly pulled level with Gerry’s vehicle, almost as if it was racing to catch them.
The passenger–side window slid down, and Jackson’s face appeared, while Victoria was at the wheel.
Spotting them, the butler frantically rolled down the window, his hands shaking with urgency.
Jackson yelled, “Grandpa, what’s wrong with your car? Vickie and I were following you, and something seemed off, so we hurried over to see what’s up!”
The butler, hearing Jackson’s voice, shouted back, “Sir, the brakes are totally dead. Nothing’s working at all!”
“What? I can’t hear you!” Jackson shouted, craning his neck. “Vickie, get us closer!”
Victoria nudged the wheel, bringing their car so close that the side mirrors were almost touching.
The butler shouted again, “The brakes are dead!”
Jackson frowned, was about to press for more answers, when his phone suddenly rang.
He quickly grabbed his phone and saw Stephen’s name on the screen. Jackson answered and put it on speaker.
“Jackson, I’m sorry! I shouldn’t have kept this from you. Gary’s always believed Grandpa Gerry was behind Mom’s death, so he’s been planning revenge for days now. He sabotaged the car Grandpa used to pick me up,” Stephen’s voice crackled with anxiety over the phone.
Jackson’s face turned grim. “It’s too late. I’m doing everything I can to stop Grandpa’s car, but honestly, I have no idea if it’ll work.”
But what Stephen said next was even more shocking. “That’s not all. Gary rigged a bomb under Grandpa Gerry’s car. If he flips the switch, the whole thing will be blown to pieces!”
